MidCon 17 - 19 November in Derby

Postby Big Gun » 13 Oct 2017, 11:59

The 38th MidCon Games Convention will take place from 17 – 19 November in Derby (East Midlands). In its heyday in the 80s and 90s MidCon used to be mainly a Diplomacy convention. The one time I played at MidCon was in Birmingham in 1984 when there were about 12 boards. The F2F hobby was much bigger here in the UK at the time and very well organized.

Sadly there hasn’t been any Diplomacy at MidCon for years now, although there are certainly some people who go there who know how to play the game. So – together with my friend GPD who I met this year at the WDC in Oxford – we are hoping to revive the hobby in central England and try to get something together this year!

We will definitely be attending on the Saturday and Sunday and hoping to find some fellow Diplomacy enthusiasts who will join us for at least one game on each day. No tournament stress. Just fun!

It would be great if we could get a board together for both days. On Saturday night we will be going to a good curry house to re-live the first game over some cold beers and spicy food!

Come on guys. I know there are some really good people out there, who I would love to meet face to face. The experience we had at WDC was addictive and really enjoyable, not just for the Dip, but for meeting and getting to know people you play against on a daily basis.

Also, is there anyone who will be attending the Midcon event for other reasons, and can meet up while we are there?

I'm down! :)
I've now lost so many tournaments I can no longer fit them in my signature.

Brilliant. Jeremy, the MidCon organizer, said he thinks he can rustle up more players and he might play a game with us himself too. Can we aim for a 10am start on the Saturday? Any preference as to game length? I'll bring a board. I was also considering making up a Versailles board. Any interest in playing that variation live maybe on the Sunday?

I was wondering who would bring a board. And absolutely, Versailles would be fun.

Two questions...

Is it the Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland or the Hallmark Hotel Derby Mickleover Court? I assume it's the former?

What sort of time do you reckon the games will wrap up?

The venue is the Hallmark Hotel near the railway station. I'm staying at the Hallmark Inn which is opposite because it's cheaper and they still have single rooms. Check out the infos in the link above captainmeme, you'll be able to book online.

On Saturday I'm suggesting we play 10am - 1pm - stop for lunch and resume at 2.30pm and play until maybe 5.30pm or so. So with 15 minute turns until maybe 1911-ish.

On Sunday we could just play through until say 3.00pm max and then go home.

How does that sound?

Sounds good to me!

I just realised it's far cheaper for me to get 2 day return tickets and spend the night at home in Manchester. I guess I'll be travelling a fair amount over those two days :D
