A new challenger has appeared

Postby BaronRichard » 01 May 2020, 04:14

Hello fellow Diplomats (Is that what we are called? If not, it ought to be!)!

An Old Fogey here, who played the game fairly regularly in his college days some decades ago. I kept my set over the years, and am finally getting around to looking for, finding, and joining an on-line community.

I figure that with everything under "lockdown / shelter-in-place" orders these days, and with me "working from home" (that's what they're calling it so I can still get paid), I now have plenty of time to participate in a game or three.

Looking forward to trying out a couple of openings that I've been working on (in my mind),

Respectfully,

Baron Richard von Hofbau
Minister of State, country TBD......

Welcome to the mad house. I can recommend Classicist games as they incur fewer surrenders that spoil contests.
Also PDL (PlayDiplomacy League) is excellent & Woolgie manages the list of standby players that are invited to participate as/when a replacement is needed (quite often). Send a PM to Woolgie if interested. The PDL games are excellent.

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished.

Welcome.

The PDL that V mentioned has already started, and some players are have already started their 2nd of 4 games. However, there is an alternate list for fill-ins as some people may drop.

But I would recommend just going to the "join" link under games, and looking for any new game that doesn't require a password or premium membership. You can sort by turn duration and other variables to find the type of game you are looking for. Try out a game or two and decide if you want to go premium or not. Premium memberships allow you to play on alternate maps, alternate scenarios, and with special rules. Otherwise, you can stick with the standard free membership and play just classic Diplomacy.

Once you start a game, as a tabletop player, you may prefer the menu-based entry in the bottom right corner of the map, but I also came here as a tabletop player and I not only have gotten used to the map-entry (clicking directly on the map itself), but I actually prefer it now. Just be forewarned that there is a chance of entering incorrect orders on the map. Of course, there are mistakes and then there are "mistakes", and the intentional illegal order has a long tradition in tabletop. Also note that, in my experience, the map-entry appears to work better on a computer vs my phone, because my phone has a lag between when I enter the orders and the website recognizes them. So there really is a chance for mistakes (no air quotes).

Good luck.

Welcome! As others have said before: join a game that is open so you can get a feel for the site, but don't get discouraged if there are surrenders/players not communicating/etc, because that can happen when joining games on the open but rarely happens with games that are created and advertised through the forum.

Welcome, BaronRichard!

You sound like you might qualify for the Oldies group as well and it's a nice group. We usually get a game together about once a year, but generally it's like the Classicists in that you get good comms and reliable players.
