With the upcoming summit in Hong Kong, the city's communes are arranging the location. The decision for hosting the conference of world delegates is the Freehold Hotel, named after one of the earliest Mattibean settlements on Mars. The hotel holds a full set of amenities, and on the eastern end of the Kowloon Peninsula, it is situated as far away from the sprawling cityscape as possible in the incredibly crowded city.

In addition to the clear above ground components, the hotel is conveniently situated above an isolated underwater conference chamber, with clever invisible forcefields keeping the water out of the pathways of the room, making it seem like the attendees are in the middle of a completely underwater, ancient building.

This is in addition to the city itself, which will of course be fully open to all delegates to visit and experience - the dense urban area of the city - above and underground, along with underwater, is one to experience.

Re: Hong Kongference

Postby Subotai45 » 11 Sep 2019, 00:05

The Federation, responding to the request of the Cradle of the Revolution, has reluctantly decided to participate in the doomed conference. Commissar of Foreign Affairs Natalie Shackleton nearly turned around the midnight-blue diplomatic vessel when word of the debate over the location of the conference reached her. Hybrid city? She spits at the idea that Hong Kong is anything other than the indivisible territory of the Cradle of the Revolution and staunchly rejects anything that might imply an infringement on their sovereignty. However - with the promise of a visit to see the dolphins that so inspired her ideological predecessor, she grudgingly continues her journey towards Hong Kong, Bastion of the East.

The small diplomatic shuttle touches down in the city's modern spaceport, and Commissar Shackleton steps out of the vehicle. This is her not her first time, but is undoubtedly the least consequential, as the conference is absolutely certain to produce nothing of value. However, appearances must be made, and the hotel is after all, quite nice. The first committee session will take place later that evening, but there's no reason not to take a quick jump to the bar and sample the local offerings. The Revolutionary's Reference, a guide to the cultures of the various countries, usually gives a brief note as to which variety of alcohol is most common in the country - but (worryingly) the Mattibean entry reads only "Alcohol: Yes."

Really, it's business if she goes down to the bar to see what they have to offer. One could consider "the improvement of diplomatic reference materials" to be a duty of the Commissar after all...

In the stead of the upcoming conference, the King of Deseret has sent the Master of Laws and his uncle in law, Duke Patrick of Boise along with his daughter Sophia of Boise, wife of the kings brother. While the rest of the royal family is busy with the evacuation of Ceona and the great expansion. Neither Sofie nor Patrick had been outside of the kingdom before, and are excited to see the development of the UMC, and potentially use its urban planning to redevelop the city of Salt Lake. While the nations religion is strange to the two, they are at ease that the people of the UMC are a pious bunch. Both reject the use of alcoholic beverages however, while the act is legal now in the kingdom, old habits die hard and they are weary of its effects.

Commissar Shackleton strolls to the bar and snags a stool. Fortunately, gene-mods don't impede her from using the bar stool, but chairs with backs can be occasionally annoying for the winged Venusians. More importantly, no Venusian scientist was stupid enough to wipe out the effect of alcohol on the human body. While they will generally, due to muscle mass, soak up more alcohol than a baseline human, some subgroupings of the race can easily surpass a Venusian, most notably the Pacificans.

Speaking of which, it seems like awful poor manners to show up entirely sober for a meeting with the Pacificans - and even drunk, a Venusian is sharp as a whip. The NeuBrain doesn't register alcohol, so she'll have at least the mechanical half of her brain on full function, which rightfully should be enough to deal with the slower baselines. Wouldn't do to get too drunk beforehand though, so while she does order a rum and coke, that's all she intends to drink before the meeting. Her flask, however, is topped off as an escape hatch in case the capitalists get too much to bear.

Shackleton is not a career diplomat. Rather, she was an officer in the Federal reserves while serving in several roles in the Socialist Revolutionary Party. Despite taking a temporary leave of absence from the reserves, one may be forgiven somewhat for thinking she was still serving. Her cuttlefish leather coat (currently tan) has a military cut, and an astute observer of Venusian militias would note that it's a uniform item that was used in the Reserve Cavalry Corps roughly fifty years back. The rest of her attire is more typically civilian (mixing the uniform and civilian gear is not the same taboo on Venus as elsewhere). The coat mostly covers a white button-up shirt with a red rose pattern (the symbol of her party), and her hair falls nearly to her shoulders. This is rather on the informal side, but not unheard of in the notoriously lax Venusian militias. In professional settings, she goes by "Commissar Shackleton", but to close acquaintances, she uses Natalie. It's likely that the friendlier ambassadors from friendlier states will be admitted to that inner circle.

Commissar Shackleton is endowed with the full authority of the Federation to declare war on the nation's behalf, should it become necessary. But for now, she sips her drink in the nearly empty hotel bar and waits for the meeting to begin.

In front of the hotel, a glistening silver shuttle flanked by 3 Grahla Dragoons touched down. The Dragoons were an unusual sight, as they were usually reserved for combat situations. After about a minute, the gunships disgorged 20 BX-1 Commandos, which marched in 2 single file lines to line the path from the door of the shuttle to the entrance of the hotel.

Finally, the shuttle door opened. Out of the shuttle stepped a silver robotic figure wearing the green and silver uniform of the Ceonian Imperial Diplomatic Corps. The automaton stepped down from the shuttle and strode towards the hotel. It was a strange sight for the metal man to enter the halls of the convention, but stranger things had happened before. The ambassador (since it was safe to assume he was an ambassador) was a little perplexed to find the other representatives still absent, but undaunted, it asked a porter where they were. Glancing out the window, the ambassador watched as the robotic soldiers returned to their gunships and took off with the shuttle in tow.

It wasn't long before the ambassador found its way to the bar, where he found the Venusian representative. "Greetings, fellow ambassador. I am RT-3951, but you can call me Artie. I was sent as the Ceonian representative to this event, as the Emperor in his wisdom found it prudent that no human Ceonians be risked in this endeavor. I am, of course, fully sentient and capable of aptly representing my country, so you have nothing to fear. In fact, I am probably more capable of representing the direct wishes of the Emperor than any biological entity, as I have been programmed with a strict code to follow the orders of the Emperor to the letter. Admittedly, I thought it was a bit controlling, but what do I know? I'm just a machine. A machine with feelings, sure, but still a machine."

For the first time since arriving, Artie relaxed his professional posture and let out a clearly pre-programmed sigh. He took a seat next to the Venusian. "Man, I wish I could have a drink. I hear from the humans that it can help one relax and forget one's troubles." He let out a synthetic chuckle. "I'm a computer. I can't forget. Sometimes I wish I could."

"Ah, that explains the military parade held outside the hotel. It's strange that you're valued enough for a parade, but still treated as a second-class citizen, no?" Shackleton inquired. "Back home, our machine intelligence citizens are equal to we biologicals."

Remembering the artificial energy shield organ and the mechanical half-brain, the commissar is forced to amend her statement. "Okay, mostly biological. We, fortunately, can still enjoy our drinks despite the semi-robotic brain, but we have alternatives for our wholly computer comrades. It's a shame your regime does not have an embassy on Venus, you'd probably quite enjoy the treatment our machine intelligence counterparts."

"I've got to say," continues Shackleton. "The Federation is not holding out much hope for these talks. We've got good noses, and something smells fishy when it's the Archaggressor requesting a peace summit. We probably won't believe it anyway, but does Ceona have any idea what we're doing here?"

"Why are we here, you ask? Honestly, no clue. I was programmed to be an impartial representative, but the Emperor's personal vendetta against communists in general and Venusians in specific is no secret.

And the military parade? I think it was honestly mostly for show, since thE Emperor really likes to flaunt his power as much as possible. I do believe there was some reason to protect me, however, as I am both a valuable piece of technology and an official representative of the state."

Artie paused for a moment, then continued. "The Emperor has just informed me of the details of the opening ceremony. He wishes to express his displeasure that Ceona was not represented, as it is one of the older nations on Earth, the dominant power in South America, and a key figure in the politics of Cairo. See, the Emperor has a direct line through me, and can both watch the proceedings and communicate directly to me. That's another reason he picked me to be the ambassador here. It's a bit sad to me, though, that the artificial intelligence community is not yet fully recognized by my country. It's just my personal opinion, but I hope the biological citizens come to their senses eventually. I, for one, would love the chance to experience a biological existence. Sure, I know I'd be more fragile, but there are so many experiences I'm missing out on! I know we have the tech. It's only s matter of time, am I right?"
