The meeting with the Emperor had been, well, overwhelming to Prince Tyler. The Emperor was a stern man, and clearly not one to take situations lightly. The private meeting had truthfully only filled Tyler with more questions, but he understood one thing very clearly: the Emperor had not been bluffing. The information he had could tear a rift through the kingdom of Deseret, and he didn't strike Tyler as the type unwilling to use it.
After the private meeting, Tyler was escorted to a small, simple chamber. Unlike most of the rooms in the palace, this was very utilitarian and elegant. Most of the rooms were, to put it bluntly, almost unfashionably extravagant. It was all overkill. The drapes were all red and purple silk, the rooms were filled with (often unnecessary) gold and platinum furnishings, and everything smelled vaguely of lavender. This room, however, was adorned only by a long, black table, many bright lights, and countless tasteful cupboards, drawers, and computer monitors in the walls. There were no windows. This was clearly some kind of simple medical room for the palace.
There was a strange, humanoid machine standing in the corner when Tyler entered the room. Amelia was permitted to stay, but his escort left the two of them while they waited outside. After a moment, the gleaming chrome figure woke from its slumber.
"Greetings, Prince Tyler of Deseret! I am Imperial Automated Nurse 79, but you can call me Ian. How are we feeling today, Prince Tyler?" The voice sounded almost perfectly human.
Tyler was dumbfounded. A machine? Capable of such thought? He'd seen some strange things, and even heard of such creations, but this was still new. "Uh, I'm doing well, I suppose." Ian chuckled."No worries, Tyler. You are in the very best hands in Ceona! Yes, I know you are probably not used to a self-aware machine like me, but honestly, I'm just like a normal person. I've just been designed to be very good at what I do, and I love my job! How are you enjoying the palace? The Emperor likes things a little too fancy, if you ask me. Thankfully, I was able to convince him that I operate most optimally in a simple environment. He listened to me, so I get to have my place be the way I like it. So, I hear you have arrived with a few new cybernetic enhancements! May I please see them?"
Amelia helped Tyler to open up the briefcase containing his new eye and new arm. She flashed him a shy smile, one of the first times he'd really seen her show any kind of emotion since meeting her. Ian gasped. As least, as much as a robotic construct can gasp. "Oh, these are beautiful! I'm honestly a bit jealous myself. I never get any truly cool tech myself. What I wouldn't give for a pair of pieces of robotic art like these! Now, I'll need you to go to sleep, and the installation operation will be over before you know it." At this, Ian's arms split into four distinct appendages. One approached Tyler with an attachment that looked like some kind of mask. No sooner had it touched Tyler's face than the prince began to fall asleep.
He awoke what seemed like minutes later. Everything felt completely normal, except for one thing: he could see again! A little while later, and he realized he could even feel his arm! Ian leaned over the table. "I see you're awake! You have several things you can now do that were imposible for you before. You are more than you were. For example, notice this computer on your arm? That will control everything you can now do. I think you'll have a lot of fun playing around with it. Now, I just need to show you how to remove and attach your implants should the need arise. Knowing your new assignment, I suspect it might."
Over the next two days, Tyler got used to his new arm and eye. He rather liked Ian. He was friendly and approachable. Whenever he had a question about what his implants could do, Ian was quick to answer. If he ever wasn't feeling his best, Ian would know before Tyler even said anything, and would find the perfect remedy.
As he was about to leave, he was approached one last time by Ian. "It will truly be a shame to see you go, Prince Tyler. Don't forget me, please. I know I'll remember you." Tyler smiled. He had felt at home for the first time since being in Deseret thanks to this strange doctor. "I won't, Ian. Thank you."
