You should reward with cake.... or home brew.

Who the hell wants a rubber?

Rematch.

To me, 'best' player takes into account results AND committment. To me, I would never give the award to someone in my team who has only played 2 out of every 3 games. It's fine to turn up when you feel like it and win every game, but that is not a 'player of the year' to me.

Per joe’s original post earlier comments, the missed games were pre-approved and for family commitments. For an amateur/community sports league, that’s par for the course.

No commitment.

Award say 0.5 wins for a missed rubber.

That would put both on 29 and you can call it a draw.

0.5 is a little arbitrary, but if you award 0.48 for a missed rubber (I.e. half of Rob’s win rate) that would give the win to Matt.

You should definitely award something for a missed game. Our main client does this at work to balance the scores amongst suppliers. But the rate is up to you.

If it's a tie, I go with the supplier who buys me most beer.

One point per rubber. 29 beats 23 all day, every day.

Wow, thank you all for the input! :D

I see both sides of the argument on this and genuinely couldn't decide between the two hence why I decided to ask for some help. I think Woolgie has stepped in with the answer...

For every missed match a player is awarded rubbers equalling to 50% of their win ratio. A player isn't unfairly penalised for missing games but also those that put in the effort to attend all the games are fairly rewarded.

I'm going to go with that. Thanks for everyone's input!

How about you give them each an essay questions? Something like, "Tell me when a Lepanto has worked for you and why" - or "Should Germany ever attack Austria before 1903". I think it would be clear based on their responses who the most worthy player is.
