Who wins player of the year?

Postby joe92 » 24 Jun 2019, 13:48

I'm having to pick the player of the year for my badminton team. I have a dilemma which I don't know the fairest way to resolve.

There are two players who I feel could win it. Rob has the best win statistic but Matt has the best statistic-to-game ratio.

Rob has played 8/12 games and in those games won 23/24 rubbers (95.8% win).
Matt has played 12/12 games and in those games won 29/36 rubbers (80.6% win).

If we say that every player had a potential to win 36 rubbers in the year, then Rob's statistic drops to 63.9% (which is actually the lowest adjusted score for the entire team as he missed the most games). Is that fair to penalise him for the games he couldn't attend? On the contrary, if I go based on the pure win statistic is that not unfair to Matt who reliably turned up to every single home and away game throughout the year and pulled in an impressive 80.6% win ratio?

What do you think? Maybe there is a standard formula for deciding this?

If Rob had played every single game I have no doubt his win ratio would have been the best, but he didn't... I'm stuck. Help me. I have to pick the player and award a trophy to them this Thursday...

Well, you can probably run a simulation to see what would happen if Rob attended those 8 games.
Honestly though, Rob should get the award. What was his reason for not attending?

I think Rob wins it in most cases, but there are a few important factors:
1) does playing more games effect you negatively
2) were the games Rob didn’t play more difficult
3) has Matt ever scored in 24/24 rubbers
4) have they played matches against the same opponent
5) do they both care about that trophy
6) why was Rob not there 4 games?
7) has either of them won it earlier

1 - Well, it can negatively affect your win ratio if the missed matches were more difficult
2 - Of the matches missed, 1 was the most difficult game of the season, 1 was a close game and 2 were easy
3 - Not sure what you mean, but if we remove the matches Rob missed, Matt's score is 18/24
4 - Each match sees everyone play the same opposition players in rotation, so yes
5 - Yes, I'd assume they would both feel pride over winning, just as winning a game of Diplomacy sees a player feel pride
6 - Legit reasons, either work or family
7 - Matt has never won. Rob has won the trophy in a different league a few years back

How many other players were in the group?

What is the median number of games played?

If, for instance, the median number of games played is 10, you could calculate the award based on each player's best 10 games.

The winner is..........................wait for it...............................Matt!

Consistency here. Play 'em all. Or don't play at all.

I would re-emphasize question #4.

Did Matt beat players that Kevin lost to?

Give it to the one with the best goatie, sideburns or other ridiculous facial hair. That's always a good tiebreaker.

It really depends how serious your league is and what the award is for. If it's going to go strictly to the best player, then Rob should win it. If we're including sportsmanship, reliability etc. in the award, then Matt has a good shot at it as well.

When I used to play football, I missed out on top goalscorer by one goal. I didn't play as many games as my team mate who won it. But he scored more goals. That's the way it goes. Percentage is not a number. Won games is.

Additionally, if you are asking this question, then I am guessing you have a preference, and are worried about upsetting someone. Decide why you decided that, and go with it. I'm sure the one who doesn't get it will "get it", and celebrate the success of his team mate. Otherwise, the one with the best beard.
