As someone who has history with several of the players on that board, I'm very happy for Goff. He's a deserving champion. I believe this makes him the first 3-time WDC winner (?).

Naah, Goffy told me some French guy has done it 3 times too, but I've forgotten the name. I'll look it up...

It’s still Diplomacy. The negotiations and fun stuff may have died down, but that happens at some point in almost every game.

Also, playing a shorter game for highest center count was part of the official rules for decades.

It’s explicitly provided for in every edition of the game from 1961-1992.

No, we have discussed that already. You know the truth, NoPun, and repeating a lie will not make it true ever. Though you might impress some newbies, and that's what you try.

Those "rules" were an addition of the game editors (not by Calhamer, the inventor of the game) because of commercial reasons, for to sell the game also to people who haven't the time to play the full length needed to develop a real diplomacy, that is 6 to 10 hours. These "cropped" rules have been taken out later. Because they clearly destroy the diplomatic character of Diplomacy.

It's just ridiculous that the world champion of Diplomacy should be determined using such makeshift rules for cropped games. In fact we have no World Champion of Diplomacy actually, we might just have a World Champion of Cropped Diplomacy.

Btw the WDC 2019 rules are even worse than the 2018 ones. :(

If you don’t like the event—that’s fine and your prerogative. I would suggest that this probably isn’t the place to be deriding an event that a lot of us went to and had fun at. This isn’t the thread to argue if WDC is “legit” or not or whatever. You’re welcome to open that discussion in another thread, but please respect the people who put a ton of time into organizing this and then went out of their way to provide playdip updates, and the people who attended and (hopefully!) enjoyed the event, by not polluting this thread with cries of “there’s only one true diplomacy and this isn’t it!”

You’re more than welcome to open that discussion in another thread, but I’d suggest you respect the people in this thread by not trying to have that argument here.

No, Nanook, I don't criticize the event at all. In contrary, I am very pleased with you all having so much fun, and having the occasion to get to know eachother in personis. Same as I had great fun at Oxford last year.

What I address is the implications of the rules to the games, especially to the last game, the leaderboard, which I happened to carefully follow in real-time, turn for turn, till the end. And this thread in fact IS ABOUT THE LEADERBOARD GAME OF WDC 2018.

But if you still find this off-topic, maybe because you don't like what you read, then please address your tirade to NoPun, because my post is a direct answer to NoPun's posting, at THE EXACT SAME PLACE where he posted his.

Apart of the said, it should be possible to express his opinion also if it doesn't fit 100 % into the common pet cuddling.

Its pretty clear that "respect for other people" isn't something Jack believes in. He's consistently demonstrated that the only thing he's interested in his opinion, and if the way he expresses that opinion irritates other people, so much the better.

THAT unpleasantness aside - and I don't believe for a moment that he won't continue to be unpleasant, so "aside for the moment" would be perhaps more accurate - I'm very glad that people came out and had fun. I'm only sorry that I didn't get to spend more time hanging out with more people - I met so many new people that I am having a hard time putting names with faces! THAT is what made this event such a success for me. :D

That is not true, and you know it, because you have met me personally (in Oxford).

Of course, there are a few persons I don't respect, but none of the posters of this forum are among these. Nevertheless, I can easily have a differing opinion and still respect somebody. Can you too?
