In the early days of diplomacy from the sample of postal games in http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/resource ... enings.htm this was the second most popular Austrian but it has been attempted less than 1% of games on playdip.

Nah, you missed it. It's the 3rd most popular opening for Austria on playdiplomacy at 13%.

Anyway, really cool data. Thanks for compiling this connect4!

Looking at that site, what's really different for Austria is the lack of the "Southern Hedgehog" opening here. 17% for the postal games overall, but 4% here. Guess we don't think the move from Tri to Ven in Spring 1901 does much good?

I'd guess (and hope fervently) that the vast majority of Smy-Gre openings are paired with Con-Bul, Ank-Con.

At 1.1% it is less than half as common as

Edi - Nwy (2.76%)
Nap - Tun (2.55%)
Lon - Bel (2.1%)

It appears to be a surprisingly common misconception that navies do not need to stop in the sea square but can cross the water and land on the other side in a single season.

Believing armies can do the same is less common.

Petunia

Why is Smy - Gre, Con to Bul, Ank to Con so much better than

Smy - Gre, Con - Bul, Ank - BLA

Turkey wants his fleet in the Med, so it has to go through Con. Smyrna doesn't have anything better to do (Armenia would be an entirely worthless gesture), so people order it to Greece for the lulz. Or at least that is what I think Petunia is saying.
Apparently I'm a Classicist. Huh. That's fun I guess

In that case why not go the whole hog and order it to Clyde :)

You forget that everything below 1% doesn't show up. 60 people go to Greece, 20 people enter to go to Clyde, 15 to Edinburgh and 12 to Yorkshire. All those other ones don't get reported. Likewise, the post reports no wins when ordered to Greece, when really any losses at all put the percent below 1, so wins just go unreported.
