ModEx: AAR's

A 3-way draw has been accepted.

Winners
26 SC's - Poland - Big Gun
25 SC's - Iran - Antigonos
19 SC's - West Africa - asudevil

Game run time: 18th September 2017 - 8th February 2018

Thank you everyone for giving ModEx a good run! There were no drop outs unlike the first run which was plagued by them and I really appreciate that. Thank you! And congratulations to the winners!

If you can take a few moments to share your thoughts on the game it will be appreciated by all.

If you have any comments on the map I would really love hearing it. Map balance, options, viable diplomacy channels, stalemate positions and so on.

Yeah baby...another ModEx...another survival in the draw.

Good game guys. Sorry I was harping on you to end this. But Im glad it came to the end it did...I never had a solo shot...so this was as good as I was going to do.

Antigonos with 2 straight draws with Iran.

I will try and give some more later. Thanks for the game...always a fun one.

I really like these timelapsed gif's. I need to see if there's a practical way I can do that with higher resolution images.

I played France. I told Britain early and often that we needed to kill Germany or neither of us was going to do well. We were in good position to do so. He balked and killed me instead. Neither of us did well. I was vindicated.

I told Italy he needed to grab what he could from Germany while I still had the pieces to support him, or he'd get run over. He waited until I didn't have the pieces to support him to make his move, and he got run over. I was vindicated.

I told Germany that Poland wasn't his friend. Poland wasn't his friend. I was vindicated.

And that's pretty much the story of the game for me.

I will try to do this properly a bit later. For now congratulations and thanks to players and to Joe for another fine job as GM. I do wish I could see Iran on the time lapse of the game though.

Congratulations to the three winners! A three way draw with such a large variant is quite impressive. More later...

So, quick thought on the map. France can do fine, but ONLY if Britain and Spain are willing to work with them. There really isn't much of a way for France and Germany to work together, and if Britain isn't willing to work with France, then France is pretty much screwed. The only realistic alternative to working with Britain for France, is to have a coalition of Italy/Poland/Spain, and I'm not even sure if that would do the job.

So...I think that France has some potential, especially with the rivers, but they're kinda screwed if Britain doesn't want to work with them. That's not ideal if France only has one realistic option for opening.

Joe - thank you for designing and hosting this game. I will take the time this weekend to write up a detailed AAR from the Polish perspective, including some feedback to the map.

There's a direct link to the gif below it. The file was too large to host on this site so it's hosted on Imgur. When you add an offsite image to the site you unfortunately do not get any scrollbars if it's too large. If you follow the link though you can see it with scroll bars as appropriate.

Thanks for your thoughts. I have always thought France is the most difficult power to play. France does have the edge with Switzerland and Belgium but beyond that it falls down to Diplomacy very quickly. Perhaps starting with an army in Marseilles now that Italy doesn't have one in Rome would be better.
