Recommended amount of players

Postby ziga192837 » 03 Jun 2017, 21:24

I'm working on a new game concept, but don't know if there are enough players interested in these types of games. So, how many people are actually active on the "Play-by-Forum Dip" section and how many would you say is the maximum amount of players in a forum variation game?

Depends on the time of year...the interest in a variant...the quality of GM...and stuff like that. I would bet that the most our current forum could handle is probably 10-12ish....but it would have to be a pretty good map to get that much interest.

If this is your first variant, or at least your first playtest, I'd aim low: between 5 and 7 players. Certain 3-4 player variants can work from time to time as well, but with that low a player count, you start moving away from Diplomacy-style negotiations and need to have some compelling gameplay to compensate.

Higher player number games can be great, and I'm running one right now with 10 players.

However, more players generally means more work (especially for the GM), and it also means dealing with more replacements and attrition. You also have to rethink the differences between starting setups and victory conditions, especially if you don't want the game to take considerably longer than the average Dip game.
