Rest in Peace: Larry Peery

Postby NoPunIn10Did » 13 Mar 2019, 05:18

Per an email from Diplomacy World today, I have been informed that Larry Peery, one of the most eccentric and important early figures in the Diplomacy hobby, has died.

Here's what I shared with the Face-to-face group that was swapping Peery stories:
He was a frequent observer in the play-by-email games I ran and played in over the past few years. He was always loaded to the brim with non sequitors, and he would fill the public press with amusing (and confusing) pseudo-travelogues.

He had a fondness for classical music and international politics, and he had an amusing way of narrating history by putting himself into the story. To be fair, it could get tiresome (or just plain confusing), but he was impressively dedicated to the art of fabulation.

There was one point at which I asked him to join a game as a replacement player, to fill in for France. His email response was a link to a Youtube video of a woman singing the Marseilles. When I attempted to confirm that he was using the video to say "yes," he, in Peery fashion, replied with a link to a Youtube video of a different woman singing the Marseilles. He eventually confirmed, in text, on the third reply. It was classic Peery.

Larry, you will be missed.

Peery was a strange, sweet, and beautiful man. I'm both fortunate and glad to have had the opportunity to get to know him a bit over the last few years. A wealth of knowledge on many subjects, and an irreplaceable piece of Diplomacy history. The Perriblah will be missed. And of course Larry will be missed.

Oh that's really sad.

Like many others on here I've read a lot of his writings since the early years of email and online Diplomacy.

Always informative and often written with a wry quirky sense of humour they made great reading and I learnt much about the game from him.

RIP Larry

Very sorry to hear of the death of Larry Peery.
For those who hadn’t had the pleasure of engaging with Peery across the Diplomatic table, Larry combined boundless enthusiasm with an idiosyncratic style of correspondence, all informed by the adventures of an exceptionally well-travelled life. A peerless member of the Diplomacy community, as he may well have said himself…

Chris Martin has posted a GoFundMe page to collect donations toward Larry's funeral expenses.
