Kingmaker: Introduction

Postby rick.leeds » 29 Jun 2014, 11:21

A while ago I had the idea of running a game of this game on the Forum but then real life intervened and it never happened. This summer, I propose to run one, starting mid-/late-July.

Kingmaker is a game which pits 7 or 8 players against each other. The aim is to control the last surviving heir to the throne of England. It is set in the 14th Century, when the rival houses of York and Lancaster strove for control of the throne. At the start of the period the House of Lancaster were in control in the person of Henry VI, an ineffectual king. Richard, Duke of York, and set out to assert it. Thus commenced the series of battles which are collectively known as the Wars of the Roses. They ended with the death of Richard III (not the aforementioned Duke of York) and the ascension of Henry Tudor as Henry VII and the creation of the Tudor dynasty that included Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

The game is based on this time period. In it, players control factions of nobles. Each faction strives to control a Royal Heir: there are three Lancastrian heirs, five Yorkist heirs and a noble - the Duke of Beaufort (Henry Tudor) who can also be a "substitute" Lancastrian. Heirs are captured, controlled or executed and may be crowned King (or, in the case of Margaret of Anjou, Queen).

The game is turn-based. Each Faction, in its turn, may move nobles, carry out combat with nobles of other Factions, call Parliament, etc. The rules of the game can be pretty complex. There are Basic Rules, Expansion Rules and Advanced Rules. I am currently finalising (when I have the time) some rules for Play-by-Forum, using a bastardised form of each of these, selecting the best from each set. Obviously, PBF is different to FTF play and I'm working on adapting the rules for this medium. I'm also going to be introducing some modified and additional rules - there's a history of enthusiasts adding to the original rule-base.

The map I plan to use is this one (originally I produced one myself but then found that this one was better).

I wouldn't expect anything concrete as far as sign-ups go before I manage to get the full rules up but thought I'd post to see if there was some interest.

I loved this game! I can't make promises to play when it is rolled out, but I am very, very interested. Who doesn't love Burgundian Crossbowman?!?

I'm far from the most experienced forum player but I play this game with my friends every so often and I'd be very interested in seeing how it runs. Even if I was just watching the first game I'd be keen to see how it goes

Ha, talk about coincidence, I just tried (unsucessfully) to talk 3 friends into playing it last night. But no, the counters are too small, it takes too long, whinw whinwwhinw, everyone wants Euro-Games with big firendly wooden blocks anymore. Keep me in the loop!

Hi I too am interested.

I had asked recently in the chat if anybody knew or could guess how much it would cost to
create a playdip like site for Kingmaker. No one answered.

Not sure how a forum game is played.

I am very, very interested. This is one of my favorite areas of historical study. The map, at first glance, appears to be excellent.
