Sahara 6/7

Postby asudevil » 23 Sep 2013, 03:28

So, you have heard of Deluge?...where global warming occurs and the land starts to sink below the water...

Everyone makes a run for Switzerland as the rest of Europe sinks under the seas....

Well this game is called Sahara. The rules for it can be found here...EDIT...the sinking/rising is at the end of the post

Its played on a standard map, but instead of global warming sinking the land under the water, it dries up the seas until there are no more water spaces. Landlocked fleets automatically become armies, unless specified otherwise by the owner.

I am a big fan of Deluge, but was wondering how balanced this would be... Everyone makes a run for Iceland in this game and the first change to the map isn't until after fall 02.

It may be a little more unbalanced towards England since he has to get to Iceland, but Deluge seems that way towards France, but Turkey has won a couple of times...and the game lasts until 1911, so its a long time to just hang out and wait.

And since everyone has to go AWAY from Turkey, he may be able to just pick up SC's at will.

Anyway, blind Auction bidding, so no discussion of strong/weak countries if you want to play this game.

I will run this as a 3/1/1.

This game WILL BE PLAYED UNTIL 1911 and a winner is found. There will be no weak draws in 1906 so people can all be "winners". This is a solo only game, and if you don't like it...don't play it.

Pedros and I once tried to develop rules for running Sahara and Deluge simultaneously. It was weird. Oddly there were not many conflicts through the first 3-4 years.

Edit: I'm not taking an extra game right now, but I'll be watching this one.

I don't have time to play a full game atm, but sign me up as an alternate - my schedule should settle in a month or so.

Wow, poor Turkey...

Well sign me up. I think I'd enjoy a fun, not too serious variant.

The rules are a bit weird by the way, with supply centres appearing in both spring and fall seasons - as if there's a difference!

My suggestion would be that after every winter build season, you mark on the map with red supply centres that are going to disappear, and green supply centres that are going to appear, that year, without regard for spring or fall. Makes things a lot easier on us players, I think.

Also, Pie gets impassable twice. I haven't checked the rest the list in detail, but there may be more errors like that. Worth going through and fixing in advance :)

Finally: What are the rules for determining coast? If in F02 ION becomes land, what happens to a fleet in Ion? Does it go to the west-coast (bordering Tys) or the North-coast (bordering Adr).

I will not be marking any dots red or green...that's up to the players to follow. It goes to the coast the players specify in advance...since they know it's going to become land....they declare it the previous season

A couple more problems with the lists in the rules.

S06 "Tri" becomes an SC!! Most likely is meant to be Tyrolia I guess (which loses a centre in S10 it otherwise doesn't have!). Then it loses its SC twice (A08 and 09)

And GoL becomes desert twice!

Naples becomes impassable in 05 and 06

Rumania becomes impassable twice in A08 - should something else be there?

Finally Piedmont becomes impassable twice in A10

And by my reckoning there are 11SCs left for the final year. That's a hell of a lot muscling around Iceland!!

But still, put me down. Not absolutely sure, but it ought to be played once in a lifetime!
