*Glances Around*

Mafia is a forum game of strategy, deduction, persuasion, clever traps, nerve and deception. Every game is unique and playing it with those who play diplomacy as well makes it all the more challenging and interesting. We have a unique mafia community on the site and we're always looking for fresh blood.

Just introducing them to playdip in general, though I could try recruiting them for mafia too...

I reckon it's because you were the mentor in one of the few games of diplomacy I played before falling in this pit and never climbing out (I know, actually playing diplomacy on this website - who'd have thought it?). It took a little while before Crunkus successfully drew me in to his web too, so I think you'd got through quite a few games by the time I started.

Crunkus was much better at drawing people in here than I have ever been. Guy could convince an apple it was an orange and that was on a bad day...

Maybe I need to rebrand Playdip Mafia. Make us the cool kids on the block again.

To be honest, I suspect it's more of a systemic problem in the forum than a particular failure of Mafia to attract people. CYOC has had a pretty sharp decline in players and activity, and pretty much all of the other forum games 100% folded.

I mean, there have been no technical improvements and precious little maintenance to these forums since I joined the site, and spare a gander for when that was.
Did you know there’s a faceless old woman who secretly lives in your home? It’s true. She’s there now. She’s always there, just out of your sight. Always just out of your sight.

That would be good. But how?

Excellent question. No idea...

Find better forum software and convince NoPun to install it?

But like. Good luck with that, honestly. The very concept of a forum is outdated at this point; modern forum software exists but it's debatable how much of an improvement it would really be.

Plus I'm pretty sure nobody actually wants to pay for something new so it would have to be free, and it would require configuration, testing, and probably some kind of plan for porting all the old messages to the new platform because nobody wants to lose our archives (and I don't just mean the Mafia subforum) which almost certainly means coding a custom interface to convert the data from phpBB database into whatever is used by the hypothetical new thing.

I'm other words, I don't think that's going to happen.

I actually wonder when the last time was that we did a software upgrade for phpBB. It's not an abandoned platform by any means, it's still considered top 10 for forum systems and updates are released regularly. Version 3.3.2 was just released last November.

I don't know what version we are running though, so I have no idea whether an upgrade would actually get us anything particularly useful.

We updated to 3.2 in 2019, according to nopun's post here. I didn't notice, and to be honest I can't really imagine a forum upgrade that's game-changing. You just make threads and post, that's all you really need.

I don't think it's so much the tech that's an issue as that people aren't really using forums the way they used to. I know when Zander was doing some research on other sites as part of our CYOC conservation project, he reported that the state of forums internet-wide isn't exactly rosy. They exist, but they're not as populated as in their heyday.
