beadsman wrote:A young South American man watched with interest as the peace conference began to crumble. There were demonstrations in the square, riots, and, as far as he had heard, even a declaration of war (or two? One could never be certain when relying so heavily on rumors.)

The man, whose name was Alexander Quelleres, walked calmly to the front of the hotel. "Hello there!" He said in a cheerful voice. "I am a representative, but I'm afraid no one really knows about my... Organization. I represent the free peoples of Ceona. I believe we are known as the People's Alliance of Ceona, yes? I would like to speak with the Venusian Ambassador, please. It's quite urgent. If you speak with the UMC delegate and inform him that I am here to make a deal, I'm sure they will oblige."

The People's Alliance had been called many things in the past. They had tried to enact economic change for centuries. Before, if course, the leaders had been greedy. They had wanted it all for themselves. Times had changed, though, and now the organization was run by the people. No, they weren't really the same as the old group at all.

The Commissar is skeptical, but will give the newcomers a shot. No, it would not be beyond the Ceonans to pull something like this, a false front. But anything, she supposes, is worth a shot. Unlike Domuia, the Federation recognizes the global importance of Ceona and, well, to convert the Ceonans to socialism would be quite the coup...

"I am Commissar Shackleton of the Universal People's Federation," she introduces herself. "I don't believe I've caught your name?"

Councilor Mariam barely repressed a sigh, as she stepped back from a short conversation with one of the hotel's staff. The announcement by the Ceonian representative had left everyone confused and shocked - for a peace conference, it certainly had devolved into mass protests and a declared war rather quickly. Though, perhaps from a view of world peace and liberation, the disintegration of the Cyborg Pact would not be unwelcome...

For an instant, she noticed a figure approaching, another delegate - but before he reached her, she felt a communication channel request it - the escort. For the next half minute, she engaged in a silent dialogue with the professional - luckily, with this many important diplomats, they'd managed to get their hands on a squad of Guards to oversee the safety of the conference - and authorized the deployment of another dozen unarmed millitia. This was turning out to be *quite* the headache - particularly with the ill-advised Domuian mob/demonstration...

Repressing another sigh, her eyes refocused towards the nearby man, and she gave him a practiced smile. "Yes?" She asked the Pacifican representative in an easy voice. "I don't believe we've met yet."

"I don't believe we have, Madam Chairwoman. My name is Agent, an Agent in the Imperial Inquisition and former attaché to the Pacifican Colonial Self-Defense Corps and currently transitioning to a new role within the Diplomatic Corps. I'm also starting a new Cycle, and am deliberating on what my name should be for this one. Before I introduce you to my compatriot here, Keanu, who has been excited to meet the rest of you.", gesturing over to the other Pacifican, "I must by Pacifiacn law alert you I possess Class 5 and above augmentations from my prior role."

The contrast between the two couldn't be any more different. Agent was wearing a suit and tie, all black and white with dark sunglasses on, looking more in place in a spy thriller or noir holo than a conference. His body was vaguely androgynous-were it not for his voice, one may wonder what sexuality he had. At the very least, onlookers would be more prone to ask for preferred pronouns than for most people. Meanwhile, Keanu was sun-tanned, well-muscled and large-there was nothing feminine about him. And where Agent was in black and white, Keanu burst with color from the Hawaiian shirt under his blazer to his tie to his shoes. Somewhat hidden, but gills dotted the side of his neck appearing for all the world to be perfectly normal.

"Very nice to meet you, Chairwoman Mariam. I am the newly elected O.P.A.A Rep to the IWA, representing all us Belters and Outers in the IWA. This whole trip, meeting other IWA members for the first time, has been totally radical. Back at the R'llyeh, or in any of the other terrariums, we Belters don't see many other IWA members often. Not too many people visit our asteroid homes, except for some tourists. I really hoped at this conference we could bring greater awareness to us. Its a totally radical experience"

Chairwoman Mariam pauses. "O.P.A.A? I'm not sure I heard of this before, are you new a party in Pacifica?"

Keanu laughs, deep sound booming off the nearby walls. "No, no party thankfully. The O.P.A.A is the Outer Pacifican Asteroid Agency, a governmental organization of most of the terrariums us Belters and Outers live in. Its largely self-autonomous, and each asteroid can run itself however they want. My home, the R'llyeh, was founded by the Church of the Deep and is the birthplace of cthulhu-anarchism. Currently I've lived on the Galapagos the last several years. And let me tell you, it may be one of the most beautiful sights ever, feels like you're surfing through the stars. My pal Agent here," Keanu grips Agents' shoulder, while Agent looks away sheepish for once, the most emotion displayed this whole time, "was instrumental in establishing it. I mean, he's been leading the recruitment for most of the asteroids the last century, ensuring that within Pacifica at least, teh tyranny of the majority does not hamper our political beliefs. And just recently, he helped form the O.P.A.A. to better improve organization and coordination amongst the Belters. I'm the first Rep sent to the IWA in a long time," Keanu continued looking back at Mariam, "so no worries you didn't recognize. We are after all a small group and not every asteroid is interested in the IWA."

Keanu wrinkles his noise, "There are even a few asteroids that still operate under a feudal system. Its sad to see the exploitation there, no matter how cool the jousting and tourney's look. AT the very least, the O.P.A.A/ banned any forms of slavery or serfdom these cowards were trying to justify in a few cases, so the citizens are free to leave whenever. The Galapagos is certainly always looking for more crew."

Agent interrupts Keanu-"Before we get bogged down in the invigorating inter-asteroid politics, I wanted to compliment you for maintaining your composure this conference. It certainly hasn't been easy."

OOC

For those curious about Mobius' extra-terrestial regions and the peoples who live there:

The only point not made, is that since then, those terrarums have expanded significantly. They served a good way for Pacifica to send away anyone they felt would threaten the political system (because their beliefs challenged its core, or they were parts of historically agitable classes such as minor nobility).

Mariam looks over the pair as they speak - such a striking difference between them, the cool, collected .. Agent? Agent, she decided was the right way to refer to him. A name and a title - always intriguing to see how those on their strange Cycles viewed themselves. And on the other end, the relaxed, outgoing Keanu, from some strange apparent IWA members. She did remember, faintly, the presence of a mixed number of asteroid communes - but she'd never met anyone from them, and hadn't realized any were within Sol.

At the compliment from the Agent, she nodded curtly. "It is my duty at this Conference, Mr... Agent. Diplomacy is rarely easy - and at least my actions here haven't provoked a war. Given the recent results... I suppose that will have to do." She smiled, then glanced at Keanu. "The OPAA sounds like a fascinating place - and one that many of us would be interested in hearing about, I'm sure. Are you planning on sticking around in the city after this conference ends? There'll be plenty here who'll want to hear about your Terrariums in greater detail - and likely visit to see first hand."

Behind her, there was the sound of another Domuian striding up to the podium to speak - after a short argument with one of the Guard detachment, and start to give another speech. She kept part of her attention on the words being said there, while the rest of it was on her discussion with the Pacificans. Hopefully this one would be better than the opening speech...

Before the Pacifican delegation could answer, the Domuian Ranger finished her short speech. In comparison to the opening ceremony just an hour earlier, it was clearly a step up. Despite a regrettable focus on the protest - and its characterization as a riot - it was much more conciliatory.

And, just as clearly, required an answer. Mariam gave a short, polite response to the Pacificans to disentangle herself, before striding up to the stage.

"Thank you, Ranger Eros." She announced in a gregarious tone, looking as composed as she could manage after the last hour. "Those are admirable sentiments to express, and the goal of world peace - and prosperity - is why the Hong Kong city council was happy to host this event."

A pause, to look over whoever was left in the assembly - not getting hammered at one of the open bars, which sounded more appealing by the minute. "Despite the deplorable declaration of war marring this event, it is good to hear high ideals that will dictate how the war will go." Another pause, struggling to think what she could say, looking over the crowd.

Perhaps this conference - and its aftermath - can be salvaged after all. Mariam reflected, starting to move back to her seat, when she felt the head of the Guard detachment's communication reach her.

Councilor. The clipped voice sounded in her head, fast and distinct. We've identified the instigators of the Domuian counterprotest - they were directed to do so, to assemble and head towards the Park.

Mariam frowned, already halfway to her seat. Who would have...

Directed by the Ranger detachment of the official Cooperative delegation.

Why was nothing simple with this damned conference?

As the Mattibean official walked away, Agent's augmented hearing implants let him hear the frustration in her footsteps. Hopefully not with us. It would be a failure if we cannot get Keanu integrated into the IWA, and increase our diplomatic flexibility.

Still, we've spoken to one nation now it is time for another. "Hey Keanu, do you mind grabbing some drinks for the two of us at the bar? And saving a spot? I have another diplomatic meeting with regards to Pacifica. We won't be discussing OPAA topics, but perhaps as an IWA member, you can help mediate this discussion?"

Keanu, looks back from the bar he'd been staring at seconds ago, first slightly offended his friend would use the OPAA Delegate just to get drinks before realizing what was actually being asked: "I'll look and see if we can get a table. And maybe appetizers, if thats as common here as it is for us Outers"

Smiling slightly, the two Pacificans turned around and split up. Both knew that the next several minutes would determine whether their superiors in Honolulu or the Rubble, would call the conference a success or failure. As Keanu walked towards the bar, Agent faced his next target, prepared himself mentally, and began approaching him.

The Commissar's own augmented hearing would hear Agent's footsteps from across the hall, and stared down the newcomer as he neared the Venusian. What a day this could be...Maui, help me.
