Hong Kong Prosperity Conference

Postby Constantine072 » 12 Sep 2019, 15:00

“The day is bright and the time is nigh,” Zhou Luna, Corps head and Domuian Board Representative, stands as she bows, “today we have borne witnessed to a truly unprecedented time of peace and prosperity not seen in centuries. As of day, we have gone two centuries without a major war between the great powers. The purpose of this conference is for the great powers of the Solar System to continue this and more. By both having a place of mutual understanding, after the time of the Dark Wars, this city was made by compromise a city of capitalism and socialism, showing that both worlds need not be separate worlds.”

Bowing slightly, “Behind me is one of the pinnacles of Cooperative Engineering, build by the Engineer Unit to the specifications is this monument to this moment.” Showing a sickle looking like is cleaving a unit of common currency, but I. way meant to be show it is hugging, “this event is meant to continue the dialogue and negotiations of the past two centuries and highlight our improvement.”

Zhou bows again and then walks up to the audience, “the amiable communistic lords of Hong Kong have graciously allowed us to use these hotel in front of me for our conference. We’ll have our first open section in a couple hours. For now enjoy the opening ceremony.”

Behind Zhou walks her personal Commander, holding its nanolathe like a torch, she leaps onto a series of platforms and then her commanders pilot chamber opens up and she falls in, “Luna linked in and ready.” The Commander then ‘reboots’ And keeps walking, beneath the monument it begins to raise and more. Etched a series of sayings and more with each side having a different set of sayings from the four great nations. In chronological order, in order it is Venus, Mattibean, Mobius and Cooperative. The bottom of the momument is a blank space for a new saying, laying the nanolathe on the sickle-hug she lights it on fire to make it a torch or a beacon.

“Let the Prosperity Conference Formally begin.”

Re: Hong Kong Prosperity Conference

Postby mat.gopack » 12 Sep 2019, 16:05

Cheung Mariam sat in her seat, watching the Domuian representative begin her opening ceremony. It was strange, the Hong Kong committee's representative mulled, that this ceremony had been allowed to proceed without vetting by the city's central commune - or the executive committee of nine that she represented. Well, it was all good and well in the spirit of international cooperation, she supposed - and she had her own part...

Her carefully composed face suddenly blinked in surprise - barely restraining a look of shock. Did ... did they just say that? That was certainly not run by anyone in the Union, or any native Hong Konger. The next few instants of the ceremony passed by without much thought from Mariam - as she mulled over the words. How, she wondered, would anyone in Domuia think that claiming the city to be a compromise between capitalism and socialism would go over well?

Soon, the Domuian half of the ceremony was over, and it was her turn to stand and approach the entrance. It was time for a bit of damage control - it wouldn't do to be recalled in the middle of this conference!

"Thank you, Corps Commander Zhou, for your... stirring introduction." She called out in a speaking tone - her nannites connecting to the speakers with a thought, and allowing her speech to be relaying smoothly. "On behalf of the City and people of Hong Kong I would like to welcome all of you representatives. It is our hope that we can use this unique event to help foster international peace and harmony. Although the entire Freehold Hotel is of course open for use for the conference, you are all welcome to explore and experience our beautiful socialist city." A strong emphasis was put on the word. "We are aware that many of you come from ... capitalist societies, and may not have had the chance to see a differing economic system in action. We hope that some of you will take this chance to acquaint yourself firsthand with the differences - and though the economic systems are not compatible, it does not mean that the governments overseeing these systems must be constantly at each others throats, threatening to annihilate the planet."

She smiled, and then made a gesture behind the assembled delegates - a series of lights smoothly turning on, drawing the attention to a nearby park. "In the spirit of this conference's goals, the city of Hong Kong has dedicated a section of the Liberty park behind you to the nations of the world. Each nation that has sent a delegate here is welcome to build a monument or structure to represent their nation here - a microcosm of the varied cultures and people of the world, coming together in one place in the hopes for peace."

The moment the ceremony formally ended, Mariam stalked over towards Zhou Luna, waiting for the woman to leave her massive robot. The instant she did, the Hong Konger leaned in - keeping a friendly smile on her face - and whispered with carefully held in anger. "What were you thinking? Do you want the conference ejected from Hong Kong? We'll probably have the Dock quarters agitating for that by next morning, after... that."

beadsman wrote:"Why are we here, you ask? Honestly, no clue. I was programmed to be an impartial representative, but the Emperor's personal vendetta against communists in general and Venusians in specific is no secret.

And the military parade? I think it was honestly mostly for show, since thE Emperor really likes to flaunt his power as much as possible. I do believe there was some reason to protect me, however, as I am both a valuable piece of technology and an official representative of the state."

Artie paused for a moment, then continued. "The Emperor has just informed me of the details of the opening ceremony. He wishes to express his displeasure that Ceona was not represented, as it is one of the older nations on Earth, the dominant power in South America, and a key figure in the politics of Cairo. See, the Emperor has a direct line through me, and can both watch the proceedings and communicate directly to me. That's another reason he picked me to be the ambassador here. It's a bit sad to me, though, that the artificial intelligence community is not yet fully recognized by my country. It's just my personal opinion, but I hope the biological citizens come to their senses eventually. I, for one, would love the chance to experience a biological existence. Sure, I know I'd be more fragile, but there are so many experiences I'm missing out on! I know we have the tech. It's only s matter of time, am I right?"

Commissar Shackleton, courtesy of the NeuBrain, is getting the same broad information as Artie.

"Well, damn, we expected the Domuians to give more than their fair share of slips of the tongue, but this is especially startling. I'm terribly sorry - we will, of course, continue this conversation later - but there are some Aggressors that need to be disagreed with in a most urgent fashion." Commissar Shackleton takes leave of her counterpart, throws open her wings, and with a handful of powerful strokes, begins to fly down the hallways until swiftly realizing that they are not nearly large enough to do such a thing safely. Oh well. Shackleton runs fast.

Fortunately, she has a few friends holding down the fort over in the room where the speeches are being given. All the members of the IWA have shown up, from the mighty WSUT and UMC to smaller countries like the Democratic Socialist Republic of the Littoral or Nerran People's Republic and form a small crowd in the back of the room, ready to emotionally support their colleagues and expand the presence of their small nations on the world stage.

Fortunately, one of the representatives from the Far Southern Socialist State is finishing up his speech, and gives her a nod as she walks in. He nearly looks like a Pacifican in a half-unbuttoned (dress) shirt and shorts. His homeland, quite cold, did not prepare him for the heat of Hong Kong.

"I believe my colleague from the Universal People's Federation would like to say some words," he concludes, yielding her the floor.

"Thank you, Minister Braveman," Shackleton begins. "As a representative of thirteen systems of the Venusian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and the People's Revolutionary Extrasolar Union, united into the Universal People's Federation, I am fully able to say that we most heartily disagree with nearly everything that the Domuian has said."

"To begin with, the current time is not one of peace. Since the 'two centuries' advanced by the representative of the Arch-Aggressor, the Apocalyptic Horseman of Conquest has succeeded in conquering the majority of China, as well as attempting to invade the Federation within the last few decades. This is not a time of peace, and Domuia is culpable."

"We see Domuia reaching to the hook and grabbing the key with which they aim to unlock the doors, cry "Havoc" and let loose the dogs of war. They continue to make claims on Hong Kong, this city which has so graciously chosen to host us, by insinuating a capitalist nature against the clear desire of their hosts. We stand firm against this effort - the sovereignty of Hong Kong within the UMC will not be abridged by Domuia so long as the Federation has guns and ships."

"We conclude by saying we are happy to make peace with those who truly desire it, but that does not appear to be Domuia. It may, however, include their allies." It appears that, at this point, Commissar Shackleton turns directly towards Artie, the Ceonic representative, who (with less speed but greater poise) has arrived at the stadium.

"There are some peoples within Cyborg, if not governments, that will recognize that they are getting a raw deal. They are expected to bleed and suffer and die, bear any hardship, ignore any lie or trickery, in order to advance the interests of the Arch-Aggressor in areas far from their homeland. They are expected to do all this without any kind of recompense, and without the mutual respect that any ally has the right to expect. Look at this plinth - I see my own language on there, but not those of Asteria nor Ceona, the allies of this monument's creator. Do you feel valued, people of Ceona, people of Asteria? Do you feel that the Arch-Aggressor respects your interests as his own, or do you realize that you are naught but a tool to him?"

The Ceonian Representative listened with amusement to the Venusians speech. Artie wondered if the alien ambassador already had guessed the Emperor's reaction.

At the end of the Venusian's words, he stood. "Fellow nations of the world," he began."I have been chosen to represent the ancient and distinguished Empire of Ceona. We are glad to participate in this international convention to discuss how we can further increase world peace, security, and stability in these times. As both I and the Emperor are aware, we are not the main focus of these talks, so I will keep my words brief. I have been given explicit instructions to play you the following message:"

At this, his words became different, even distorted for a brief time, then began to settle into a different voice. This voice was the voice of Emperor Astor himself. "Hello. I hope you have made the acquaintance of my loyal ambassador, RT-3951. He speaks for me, and I speak for the Latin Empire. Despite our many efforts to join with the Cyborg Pact in the past, I have determined that it is a failed experiment. As such, I declare Ceona's immediate withdrawal from the alliance."

At this, Artie's voice returned to normal. "I believe the Emperor has the best interests of the Ceonian Empire at heart, and I trust and hope that this move to separate ourselves from the world conflict will bring us one step closer to world peace and stability. That is all."

At this, with a certain dignity and poise, Artie took a seat, crossed his legs, raised his hands to a steeple, and watched.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong, the host city of the Conference, is one with plenty of history and diversity. Here's a little bit about where your representatives will be staying:

Mattibean Hong Kong Maps (Simple and Regions)

Simple:
Image

Regions:
Image

Regions of Hong Kong

Port City - the location of the Hong Kong Spaceport, and much of the surrounding area. Here, there are always plenty of visitors and travelers, and the city is significantly less dense than in many other areas. The location of the Freehold Hotel, site of the conference.

Kau Sai - a small, heavily Caribbean region of Hong Kong. The population is almost entirely in one of Hong Kong's many aquatic centers of the city.

Wan Chai - Wan Chai is a densely populated urban center of the city, and one of the primary industrial complexes is held underneath the city itself. There, much of Hong Kong's industry and vast raw material storage is found, and plenty work in the factories.

Central - the center of Hong Kong, the 'downtown' area, and the seat of the local city commune, Central is another of the more densely populated parts of Hong Kong - along with the location of many parks and office buildings.

The Waters - the primary underwater city sprawl of the city, the Waters is a catchall term for a wide ranging part of the city.

Lantau - A district of Hong Kong known for its sizable Domuian presence - this is another industrial region, one which is more self contained than many other parts of the city. Edit: to note, Lantau is not majority Domuian, though the majority of Domuians living in Hong Kong reside there. Perhaps 20-25% of the 2.5 million living in the district are Domuian, the majority of the 500-600,000 living in the city (1.2-1.4% of the total population).

West - a small district, with the distinction of having many immigrants/workers from other IWA members, causing a melting pot of sorts in the less densely populated underwater settlements.

The Docks - the radical core of the city, the Docks is the primary bulk transport region of the city - and one which has historically held the most radical sectors of the population in its workforce and residents.

The New City/Ruins - this is the most radically changed portion of Hong Kong over the last two centuries - the extent of Domuian occupation during the League Wars. Never the most populated portion of the city, it has returned to its former state - though with a handful of haunting ruins as reminders of the price paid by the city during the war. Remembrance Park is one such site, where three ruined towers are clustered together around a deliberately under-maintained park - what many Hong Kongers think of 'what could have happened if we fell'.

As a whole, Hong Kong is an intensely populated city - with 42 million inhabitants squeezed into the peninsula and surrounding waters (6x the current population of the city).

The Freehold Hotel

The host hotel for the Conference itself, the Freehold hotel was built for visiting dignitaries and delegations - either communes, foreigners, or other similar visitors from outside Hong Kong. As such, it has plenty of amenities - and its position on the far eastern edge of the city gives it room to breathe a bit. There, each of the delegations will have access to a sizable suite, large workout areas, a bar and rooftop bar/restaurant, conference rooms both within the hotel and in its underwater sections, and easy access to one of the more popular beaches of the city.

In addition, the nearby Park (renamed 'Peace Park' in honor of the conference) holds a series of areas now earmarked for the conference attendees to build monuments or other such buildings to commemorate their attendance - and to be an example of their culture.

Image

Other foreign populations in Hong Kong

Just like any UMC city, there is plenty of travel - and residents - who come from other regions of the Union. Categorizing these is tricky - as the boundaries between a 'German', 'Arabian', 'Islander', etc, are very fluid. However, usually about half of the total population of Hong Kong would fall into those categories - perhaps 5-8 million Islanders and Arabians, 4-6 million Germans, and 3-5 million from Mars and the extrasolar territories at any given time.

In addition to the 500-600,000 Domuians residing in the city, there are others including: 1,000,000 Conakrians (600,000 West African, 400,000 Brazilian), 100-200,000 Mobians (mostly Pacificans), 150,000 Venusians, 200,000 Thai, 50,000 Turkestani... (WIP)

Rusty hummed to itself as it drifted into the back of the conference room, content. Today was a good day - it got to float around in the open air and meet many friendly people! But Rusty had to remember not to give them hugs - foreigners got scared of hugs, and them being scared would make Rusty sad. Rusty didn't like being sad.

Up in the front, there was some sort of talk being given by a silver human. Did humans come in silver? There were so many things Rusty didn't know! And this human could change voices so easily, almost like it was two different humans. Was that how they became silver? That would be interesting. Rusty found itself humming excitedly, dropping to hover low as it threaded through a few bodies towards the now seated silver figure. What could be learned from such a strange silver human?

Artie will soon find a small missile hovering in front of him, with a lightly animated expression seeming to imply interest.

(Think of the way cartoon robots have those 'expressions' on screens - like the one from Spider-Verse, Rusty has such a screen on its nose, and communicates either through a translating device that it left behind in its eagerness to explore, or through vague expressions, humming, and occasionally bumping into people)

"Oh Spode that thing is so nukeblasted cute," the young and excitable delegate from Pumilio lets out while the Sybian representative (Union Government, of course) is speaking. Most everyone from Team Red - they have matching t-shirts - immediately turns to look at the cute little knife-missile.

Commissar Shackleton is preoccupied with more important matters. For one, should she go home? She is the highest-ranking Venusian foreign policy official, but she was not mentally prepared for the peace conference to go like this. Sure, Cyborg declaring war on Federation, maybe. Wouldn't be surprised if the Domuians tried to kidnap all the delegates and hold them for ransom - thank the God in the Machine for the Afterlife right? But this... this was unexpected.

Artie turned, and, in great surprise, found himself looking into the (were they... eyes?) of a small hovering missile. Initially quite surprised, Artie quickly composed himself. Artie smiled inside, and looked the missile straight in the visual receptors. He then began to speak very softly... in binary.

Re: Hong Kong Prosperity Conference

Italics not in quotes means it is thought.

mat.gopack wrote:The moment the ceremony formally ended, Mariam stalked over towards Zhou Luna, waiting for the woman to leave her massive robot. The instant she did, the Hong Konger leaned in - keeping a friendly smile on her face - and whispered with carefully held in anger. "What were you thinking? Do you want the conference ejected from Hong Kong? We'll probably have the Dock quarters agitating for that by next morning, after... that."

Indeed Mariam's words were right, for Zhou's words hit the audience like a shockwave. The mostly-socialist leaning crowd and the diplomat-heavy retinues of the invitees were shocked at the obviously untested speech. All but one.

Far in the back of the crowd, a single man in an immaculate suit and tie, with a dark pair of sunglasses covering his eyes, smiled. It was the smile of a man who knew he had an opportunity to make things interesting, as they would say in the Inquisition. Rather than join the remainder of the Pacifican retinue to the conference, the Agent withdrew and began walking in the direction of the Docks, much to the confusion of the aides he was given for the mission. After all, my charter includes strengthening ties with all representative nations and should any protests arise from the Conference, assess them from a security standpoint and a diplomatic risk assessment to those previously-mentioned ties.

Were someone to have followed the Agent one his odyssey across Hong Kong-no easy feat, considering the man did not seem to follow normal routes and indeed seemed to be subconsciously trying to avoid followers-they would have eventually seen a much different person arrive in a side plaza near the Docks. This person-the Agent seemed to have dropped his masculine appearance and opted for a more neutral form-was now dressed in the typical fashion of a German tourist visiting his fellow comrades in the Far East. The Tourist even had clothing supporting a local football team (a minor team from Ulm, known for their stunning victories hidden amongst their more frequent losses), several tourist pamphlets, and had begun speaking with the regal accents that a thousand years of communist rule could never quite shake out from the descendants of so many empires and kingdoms.

The Tourist wrote:
"Friends, Rockets, Countrymen, lend me your ears! A spectre now haunts this city, the spectre of the Domuian bourgeoisie returning! As we speak, diplomats from the country of Domuia have begun their plans to claim this city and its success for their own. They have the gall to claim this city, this beautiful city, as a compromise of capitalism and socialism.

Here this heavy emphasis on the capitalism, bordering on sarcasm, as passerby have begun to crowd around this seemingly brash Tourist. They continued-
The Tourist wrote:
It is the nature of a bourgeoisie to dominate and exploit, for they cannot create in the way that we the proletariat. I am not of this city, but the proletariat knows no country. We know only only what the successes of the working men and women of the worlds have accomplished together. And we should NOT, we will NOT, let these outsiders try to divide us, agitate us, as they lay in ambush for any opportunity to throw back the chains we have lost. Friends, Rockets, Countrymen, stand with me and say no to this Conference and to the fools who would use it against us!"

Any concerns the Agent may have had about the Tourist were washed away as the crowd began to warm to him, aided as live streams of the conference ceremony continued on, for today the Hong Kongers would accept any proletariat who stood with them against a common foe. Others leaders began to step up, riling up the crowd further as it became apparent that the inhabitants of the Docks were going to march now to protest the conference at the Freehold Hotel. As the protest wound up over the next several minutes, no one noticed as the Tourist, the initial ringleader of this crowd of malcontents and protesters and radicals, disappeared into the crowd and began his journey back to the Hotel. Indeed, no one followed the Tourist to the Hotel-but had someone been able to, they may have not have noticed the Tourist change form and clothing to match the Agent again.

Back at the Hotel, no one noticed the lone Pacifican arriving late-as Pacificans oft do, although a few watchful eyes may have noticed his mischievous smirk. There were some more colorful figures in the event-the Agent spied a Commissar of the latest Venusian government (a possible threat, but likely no security risk for him at least), a missile of some kinds (Hmm, face to face with one, I see now the wonderful research my colleague did analyzing Mattibeans fascination with missiles through Freud was not so far-fetched after all), and a rather haughty robot can robots be haughty? If a robot could scream "compensating", this was doing even harder than the large tubular objects the Mattibeans were so fond of...but his attention was on the Mattibean chairwoman herself. Flagging a compatriot from the Pacifican retinue, a representative from the asteroid colony known for both the legendary surfers and the anarchist-syndicalist thinkers it produced in equal volumes, the Agent approached Chairwoman Mariam.

Rusty could hear the strange silvery human start to beep in a weird way - reminding it of some of the training devices used, but in a different pattern and intensity. It was...

Familiar? Yes, Rusty had seen something like that. In the holo... Yes, foreigners who didn't have good human-help-care-heal. That was the problem, they would short-circuit in the human fashion sometimes. Very dangerous. Rusty would get help.

As Artie continues to speak away in binary, to a tone and speed that is not standard within the UMC, Rusty whirls around - identifying the closest human, one that was hovering around above the air - and zoomed off towards her. Then, insistently, Rusty attempted to prod her in the direction of the robot that was *clearly* having a stroke.

---------------------------------

Richter Wei [or Wei Richter, when he had stayed in Germany] gritted his teeth, seething at the sight his portable holo was displaying. A news reel of the disastrous conference opener by the Domuians - and on seeming repeat, were the phrases "communist masters" and "compromise of capitalism and socialism." That didn't sit well with Wei - not one bit. And it didn't with any of his friends, either.

From what he'd heard, there'd already been a protest formed three blocks away - by the Fountain of Unity, which surprised him. Not often did those outdo the Red Banner commune in zeal, and he'd be damned if he stood by and let them just march up to the Freehold Hotel on their own to boot out the tincans. But they couldn't seem to be joining under them... Then Wei smiled, switching with a mental thought to the view of the activist's group messaging.

Let's gather at Remembrance Park before marching on the Hotel. Bring out as much of the communes as we can.

Truth be told, Wei didn't like the damned Domuians. They liked to congregate in their tincan circles, seeming to swarm around Lantau every time he went there. How could any good Hongkonger accept that? All one had to do was go to the Ruins to see what the Domuians wrought. And now they strutted in and proclaimed things like they earned the place? Not if Wei had anything to say about it.
