... And now for something completely different.

Fauna of the NVC: Drones

Bio-engineering is a Neo-Norse art form. In their great crystal factories, the technicians and DNA-weavers have invented the most magnificent creatures. Their progeny include great dragons with wingspans the size jets spew fire over snow-covered forests of somber flowers and fruits. Small shrew-like creatures stalk through the underbrush, keeping an eye out for less then neighborly activity. Talking trees give sage advice to packs of wolves, their eyes shining with their own intelligence and wisdom.

Drones aren't any of these things. Drones work. To be a drone a critter must meet the following qualifications:

1. It must be of very minor or negligible mental faculty.
2. It's primary job must be industrial or commercial
3. It must some sort of motor control or musculature.

Drones fulfill the jobs that machinery does in most other societies. In fact, many drones are fairly indistinguishable from computerized machinery. A robot arm, for instance, might actually conceal a giant mussel-like, errr, muscle, that interfaces with the outside world through a panel. The only tell-tale sign would be that the machine seems to fix itself, and it's "fuel" is a slurry of a protean extract and aluminum dust.

Others are more traditional bio-creations. There is a line of mining drones, for instance, that looks almost like giant ants. They drill into the earth with acid and specialized mandibles, paving a tunnel for workers and other equipment. In cities, courier drones dart through the sky. They take avian or arthropodic forms, delivering letters and parcels. At sea, strange excited sea-dog like creates drag nets behind them, returning to their owners with a smile and a catch. Still others are humanoid- in body if not in mind. They might cook or clean or do one tiny function, with a literal-one track mind, designed whole cloth by their creators.

Drones labor is ubiquitous in the NVC, and it allows the Neo-Vikings to live in something close to a fully "automated" post-scarcity economy. It is likely that one day, when the last of the humans have left the north, the drones of the north will continue to march on in their endless tasks, maintaining an ecosystem long unnecessary.

“My brother already left, to fight in this war, we cannot let him fight this war alone!” Feng Diana declared, “I am a Corps member too! We lost the last war, against those reds but only because we surrendered early. My brother is too scared, we have our armies and our Mecha. Let us take the fight to Venus!” She looks at the remaining Corpsmem, around 60 active and non-active where left on earth. With around 50 taking to the stars.

“Sister, your not the only member of the Corps, but your duty is too the People. As an Engineer, the Body, of the three Forces, you are one our people look up to. We cannot send our forces to suicide, your brother and his men are commiting to an honorable death.”

Feng looked at her ‘brother’, Mao Umbra, “you spent too long in Hong Kong Mao.”

The Master Ranger shrugs, “perhaps I did. But I learned much and saw more. If you want to know, your brother left you to lead our people to the next age.”

Looking at him, Feng glared, “No I refuse. I intend to go and fight. We have our Mecha and our droids. We should use them!”

“Then let’s us be intelligent about this?”

The Colonial Defense Corps

*Actual numbers to be provided in teh Census updates

The Colonial Defense Corps is one of several corps underneath the purview of the Praetorian Order, as specialized stormtroopers. Each colony world has its own militia, which can vary in quality, but its the C.D.F that are Pacifica's elite soldiers outside of Sol. To join, one must be of sound mind and over 75 years old with a college degree. AFter selection, recruits are loaded into a new body with the latest augmentations and military-grade cybernetic implants, and trained on each world to ensure they are acclimated to different gravities and atmospheres. These augmentations are numerous and include:
-breathing augmentations to handle less oxygen for long period of time (can hold breath for many minutes)
-enhanced healing and auto-wound closing
-enhanced reflexes, eyesight, and hearing
-enhanced intelligence and computation speeds
-greatly enhanced strength and durability
-increased aggression and pack loyalty conditioning
-muscle memory "pre-loaded" with all relevant knowledge
-memory implants to prevent accidental leakage of intel from torture
-bio-conditioning to respond to certain programmed orders
-job related augmentations
-cortical stack with memory backup in case local Asgard nodes are overloaded or unavailable; soldiers can be stored and resurrected from the stack.
-links to armor's systems
-(for officers and certain troops) a Cortana-class or lower class AI to aid with programming armor and to provide additional analysis.

Stormtroopers are trained for a variety of missions from police action to heavy combat, and may act in whatever capacity the local governors require. Most will serve under a Praetorian Knight, and the Praetorian in charge is a Consul. Bases are located on each colony world for training, research, and logistics, but most will spend the majority of their service onboard either a Valkyrie-class light capital ship or the even smaller capital ships Pacifica uses to ferry the stormtroopers from world-to-world. These ships offer a mix of ship-to-ship, orbital, and planetary siege capacities. During wartime, other units will be often be deployed such as surveillance satellites, resurrection and data storage satellites, and troops may deploy via drop pod or shuttled in as needed. Some of the capital ships also carry larger pelicans with warp engines and cryogenic chambers (to keep the smaller size even for longer cruises) to deploy troops on even farther distances.

HFPE-semi
Several Athenians are also attached to the C.D.F. as well as even some Spectres. Colonial Intelligence will be another post, but these guys specialize in first-contact missions on worlds without Pacifican presence or on high risk missions. C.D.F. commandoes are still our primary soldier outside of Sol, except for Imperial Marines.

-Shell company employed by certain intelligence agencies outside of Sol. A shipping congolomerate with subsidiaries in biotech, finance, commercial electronics, defense, and communications. Widespread throughout Sol, and agents are inside the company to smuggle agents and soldiers secretly around. That fact is not known nor is that its a front for us. It is known to be Pacifican and has a royal charter to do business.

The Cyon Imperium is now fully mobilized and is entering a war footing. What is actually going on, and what exactly the Imperium plans to do, is a complete mystery. Sure, there are some decent guesses, but that's all it is.

In light of recent actions, Kraash Taundra, Adored One of the Baujantec Consortium and leader of the Cult of Janisis states he has been removed from his position as Jan’isI temporarily. The war powers generally assumed by the Consortium’s spiritual head now falls into the lap of the Synod of Neo-Baujantec, who will outsource many administrative and combat duties to the Board of Directors. The theocapitalist State is getting a provisional leader until Kraash is restored to his position, which for many analysts is presumably until the threats to the Entinates subside and the nation is at peace.

Taundra is a reformer within the Janisist faith and played a key role in establishing the new nation. As the first Jan’isi in centuries, he is considered a Founding Father to successive generations in the Consortium. He enacted a series of social reforms coined by his friend Luminaire Tiberio as the Exalted Steps to “Janisize” the population and invent a post-Tammertert national identity.

However, many within the grand temples of the Synod found him too liberal and forward-looking, quick to disregard established traditions for the sake of modernizing the faith and putting it in the good graces of the international community. Remarkably apolitical despite his status as arguably the most influential man on Mars, Kraash preferred to be in the spotlight garnering support among those who’d been marginalized in Old Baunair, from nomadic bands in the Korhal to poor urbanites in the ultracities.

It’s hypothesized by many experts that Kraash’s pacifistic demeanor and general unwillingness to push the Entinates to the forefront of world politics may be why he was removed so quickly after the attack, so that it can be handled properly and in a way that best preserves the country’s security. Whispers abound in the upper levels of government that the hawkish Janisist cleric Uturaam could be made the provisional Adored One of the Consortium, albeit with reduced powers. Though he’d still retain the position as CEO and have the broad legislative powers of his predecessor even if said powers are diminished in matters of security.

The descendant of West African immigrants, Uturaam is young by Baujantec standards at a moderate 120 Martian years. He is a former general who proved instrumental in the defeat of the Tammertert regimd and is credited with putting down government strongholds before entering the Synod as a voting member. Uturaam is far from the political firebrand others in the international community may cast him out to be, but he does profess more traditionalist viewpoints within the faith than Kraaah ever did, even if they have moderated since his arrival in the Synod.

The cleric has also been known for his hawkish tendencies, often framing his political arguments in national security terms while raising questions about the outside world. He’s advocated for a more militarized society and a doubling in the Warrior Guild’s budget while demanding that the new nation become a beacon of capitalism as socialism begins to dominate world affairs. Though many expect that the Synod and Board of Directors will restrict how transformative this provisional leader will be, in light of the recent terror attacks it’s likely that Uturaam would at least be coming to the negotiation table in a position of strength. Time will tell how this bodes for the Consortium and the future of Mars as a whole.

The Darius Initiative has been fully mobilised to deal with the aftermath of the recent terrorist attack.

Domestically, the fallout isn't a bad as first feared within the PCG itself, though the full effects are surely still to be felt. The clean-up operation is however, underway.

Between the effect of ground impacts and the Tsunami from the oceanic impact, the Corporation believes the total cost of repairs to infrastructure and facilities could have been far worse and will take a relatively short time to remedy.

The impact on agriculture however, is a little harder to gauge. While our rain-forest is largely intact, the small coastal region of Langale Province was badly damaged by a Tsunami that pushed through to Tigris Planus, the flat plain that is our agricultural heartland, destroying around two thirds of our crops. Frasta also took some coastal damage, but it's generally higher elevation mitigated many of the effects felt in Langale Province.

For Frasta, the worst came at Cadiaropolis, where over 100,000 died when a city-shield failed under heavy bombardment. Thankfully, Firne and Elostil, further to the South and South-East respectively, suffered relatively little impact or flooding damage.

Two Nightingale Medical Frigates are currently in operating in orbit, one servicing our planetary neighbours (Baun Aresia, etc) to the West, while to the East, the other orbits over the Corporation itself, with detached sections serving the independent regions.

Already stretched to capacity on Mars, PCG Terra has contributed an additional 20,000 medical staff and around 100,000 aid workers, to help with the operation.

A “blank-cheque” project has also been announced by the Corporation, allocating an undisclosed sum to deal with the Martian situation over the coming months years and even decades.

With a budget believed to be somewhere in the hundreds of billions, such “blank-cheque” projects are extremely rare, but not unheard of. The last one coming over 150 years ago during the Brazilian Civil War.

“Your are Not Alone”

Han Apollo looks up from his warships confused and amazed, “who was that?”

“A friend.”

The sound of Warships engines roar into the comm channel. A powerful fleet stationed long in Martian orbit, has come alive and move forth. Han Apollo looks as arounf 100 Capitol Ships entering his visual range. He knew his brother, head of Rangers has looking for Cooperative old and true allies. His brother actions, the ranger, appear to have borne fruit. Coming to aid in the battle of Kuiato nows lumbered the entire Armada of Aresia. Han Apollo looked from his Commander once more up and down as his fleet more then tripled in size as the forces of Aresia have come to their former brothers. Apollo thinks to himself once more “Blood spread Finn is of course still blood.”

“....why do you come Commodore?”

“We come, to help in a final gesture of our former friendship Corps Commander Han. Our people, have decided in your darkest hour to lend our ships to our former kinsmen.”

Han Apollo pauses, the smile being felt across the fleet “Welcome, to our stand.”

The commandore nods as his assembled fleets stand ready to join Cooperative Forces. He plugs into the Nueral Networks as he see what the world his allies see. Alongside the commanders fly his Nutella-Class. The Yokai are joined by his Frigate-Escorts. The Commandore Ship itself flies to the central position alongside the Annihilation Class Commanders. A few of the them hauled heavier category weaponry and have positioned alongside DCannon Batteries. Han Apollo looking at the Commodore.

“You mean let us welcome the coming victory.”

A pair of shoes clicked down the corridor of the Senatorial chambers until the sound stopped outside the office of the Chair of the Diplomatic Corps. The guards stood aside as an imposing and very decorated figure entered the room.

"Señora La Pointe." The speaker was a tall, older gentleman who had clearly seen his fair share of war. "You called me in to brief me, I presume. What will the Imperial Republic need me for this time?" The woman in whose office he stood looked up from her paperwork to give him a once over. She was one of the youngest ever to receive the esteemed appointment, at only 29 years old. She smiled. "Ah, yes. Grand Admiral Astor, a pleasure, as always. We have some pressing business to discuss." She turned to one of the walls. As she tapped a touchscreen display on her desk, the lights dimmed, the windows were darkened, and the wall transformed into a detailed schematic of war plans. Admiral Astor sighed, muttering "I knew I should have retired after the League Wars." Director La Pointe smiled a bit at this. "Well, it's lucky for us you didn't. We need your expertise, as this looming conflict will test you to your very limits. A lesser person would not be able to succeed, but I think you can." She paused. "Well, at least I really hope you do, because I managed to convince both Consuls and several key Senators of your abilities."

Admiral Astor looked at the wall display, and breathed sharply inward. "No. That's impossible. I can't do that! That is suicide for all of us!"

The Director's smile faded into a look of sadness. "It may very well be suicide, Admiral. I, for one, hope it is not. However, it is a risk that must be taken." The Admiral's face hardened into a look of angry determination. "I will not lead my people into a suicide mission, Director. I don't care about 'moral necessity', 'precedence', 'national policy' or any other sort of horse (the next word he said was not so nice). I care about my people, and it's frankly idiotic to risk their lives for some sort of 'cause'! I thought we had abandoned that! What happened to our neutrality?!? We are making the same mistakes we have made time and time again! When will you bureaucrats ever learn?"

Director La Point looked sadly into the distance, far past the angry Admiral, far past the bumbling bureaucracy of the Senate, and far past her world. "I couldn't agree more, Admiral. See, if it were up to us, that is exactly what we would do. Unfortunately," she said, turning her piercing gaze back to his eyes. "that is a luxury we cannot indulge now. There are those who still fight for their 'causes', no matter how far-fetched, and our own existence and way of life puts us squarely in their cross-hairs. If we could truly coexist in harmony, believe me, we would try to find a way. However, there is no way to do that now. We have to choose a side, Admiral."

The older Admiral looked back with tears in his eyes. "That may be true, Director, but at what cost?" He turned to the door. Before leaving, but without turning back, he addressed her once more. "I am a soldier, and I will fight your war. I will even, heaven help me, do all I can to win your war. When I return, though, if I return, I won't have anything more to do with war." He turned back, his angry, tired eyes red with tears. "Know that I WILL win this war. I will fight until every last drop of my life is bled from me at the point of a sword. After all," He said, laughing in an eerily calm sort of way, "it is their fault that war is all I've really lived."

The Admiral turned and walked out the door. Director La Pointe smiled again, but this time, she felt tears in her own eyes. "If only we could truly have lived in peace, Admiral." She caught her tears and composed herself. "War has taken more from me than you could ever know."

"In light of recent events, and the disturbing aggression of the extremist Venusian Communist government, we can no longer stand idly by and watch as the once-proud Cooperative is dismantled piece by piece. No. Kuaito shall not fall, not on my watch. Not on Cyon's watch. Our Armada has been mobilized, and we are not afraid to stand up to those who would take away our freedoms.

The Cyon Imperium is hereby at war with the VSFR and all her subsidiaries, colonies, and anyone who wants to protect them for some unfathomable reason.

For Cyon! For Imperium! For the Republic!"
