Sure Sybus must realize it is their ally which has had the majority of foreign troops stationed in it?

At the conclusion of a live debate on the Brazilian Situation (broadcast on the Frasta Entertainment Group Network), the following uncharacteristically heated exchange occurs between a liberal critic of the president’s actions (KE), and a prominent sub-director with 100 years of service to the corporation behind him (DO), with regards to the Presidents recent actions:

KE - This is a pre-emptive strike, a military operation into foreign lands. It’s a gamblers bluff that could bankrupt the corporation if it results in the loss of major trade partners, and would destroy all our credibility within the international community… if he gets it wrong.

DO - It’s a calculated risk. A big one, for certain, but not the end-of-days catastrophe that my colleague is describing. What we have here is a strong and decisive move by a president who has seen that indecision has done nothing but prolong this conflict, and had he been more decisive in his actions during the early months of these troubles, then perhaps we could already have brought this conflict to a close and we could all now be around the table discussing the co-operative reconstruction of this fallen nation.

KE - Exactly, he failed to be decisive then and he’s overcompensating for it now, and he’s risking the reputation of the corporation, the DI, and the PCPF to do so. This isn’t about what’s best for the people of Brazil and it’s certainly not in the best interests of the corporation. This is about the ego of one man, Uriel ap Idris, and his attempts to write his name into the history books.

DO - He’s the president of the corporation, he’s already got his name in the history books. Look, what we have here, is nothing more than a low-level attempt at political provocation that would’ve been beneath Granog Hercules. You sir, are a reactionary contrarian, out to make a name for yourself, and if you can do it by smearing the good work and good intentions of our president, then so much the better in your mind. Don’t worry my friend, someone will be along with your thirty pieces of silver soon enough, I’m sure of that.

LC (host) - And on that rather heated note, I’m afraid we’ll have to say good bye to our guests…….

The enemies of my enemies are not necessarily my friend, but they may still be useful.

Threats to the Debaucherous State

Moderately successful highwaymen in Terras, Baunair

This is a continuation of the series of articles I've been writing up about some aspects of Baunairi culture and society. This is written by a Mattibean reporter stationed in Baunair discussing some of the ongoing security problems faced by the Baunairi peoples. Asrira is their guide in Baunair assigned to them by the government.

As has been made clear before, dear reader, the Baunairi are an urban people. They always have been, in fact. Going as far back as the Old Order, the various Baunairi peoples of Europe and Africa found comfort in vast urban vistas rather than rugged provincial living. But the Old Order was a more static place than the dry plains of Mars, inhabited by all manner of beast and sentients who endanger the vast metropolises that Mars has become known for. Upon secession from Mobius centuries ago, Baunairi peoples were moved from Earth to Mars at a rapid, if somewhat unorganized pace, which instigated a host of domestic problems that continue to this day. The Baunairi fondly refer to this planetary transition as the Celestial Trek.

Among the most problematic was that of the highwayman. Long expunged from most other civilizations, the flow of people to largely uninhabited, uncharted lands posed new opportunities for robbers to take from the weary. Newly erected Baunairi communities on Mars were distant, with the space in between them incredibly vulnerable to habitation by those driven to desperation in the wake of Ragnarok, which had obliterated the Baunairi economy and left millions in poverty. Highwaymen typically organized themselves into groups of 10 to 20, any larger number often leading to internal conflict and eventually death in the desert. They are nearly always led by ex-soldiers who employ asymmetrical combat tactics to catch wayward travelers by surprise and relieve them of their goods. Bands of these robbers tend to live in caves, makeshift underground shelters, and in earlier years, right outside small towns.

Genetically modified beasts are also a constant threat. Early into the Celestial Trek, geneticists in Baunair saw funding for their projects increase dramatically as they were tasked with creating "life away from Mobius". It was a part of a cultural campaign by successive Baunairi governments to wash away Mobian culture in Baunair and create new breeds of crops, pets, war beasts, and such to differentiate the newly independent peoples from their rivals. These new experimentations are known to the Baunairi as The Jubilation due to the cultural renaissance that it sparked. Over time, however, the reduction in regulation and fragmentation of scientific authorities led to unethical designs, with many monstrosities being birthed in labs all across the nation. For example, hundreds of zoos were found to have been experimenting with DNA in highly problematic ways and small labs were illegally selling beasts to the military. All too often these abominations managed to slip through the fingers of their creators and roam about the velds of central Mars. Many of them, especially those illegally designed for war, are brutal and aggressive towards humans. Breeds such as Jeobbah's dragon, the cheetah-like Zawia, and the poisonous Isty are exceedingly deadly and have been a thorn in the side of Baunairi civilization ever since the Celestial Trek.

Other interior hazards existed away from the cities, especially in regions that were inhabited by native Martians. The Rellakhans, 8 foot tall, hyperintelligent humanoids, were staunch opponents of Baunairi integration and were known for attacking airships. The Korhali, red skinned nomads, co-opted the techniques of highwaymen and were raiders of Baunairi settlements for decades. Other native Martians also fought, but these issues were resolved through cultural assimilation and a large degree of autonomy for areas where they comprise the majority. Shady merchant clans hiring attacks on rival caravans and cartel settlements are also issues. Nomadic tribes, social groupings based around cyborgs who reject Baunairi hedonism, are also known to attack careless travelers.

We write these things, dear reader, not to give the impression that Baunair is some Wild West, but simply a state that has its internal concerns. The velds of this nation are in fact populated and a vast resource the government and its corporate allies have determined must be protected. With that in mind, it was under Premier Bara that the Au'nchan-Maulba (Baunairi Ranger Force (BRF)) were introduced as a distinct force from the police and army as defenders of the interior. They've increased the security of Baunair more effectively than any other armed body in the nation, and have remarkably reduced instances of violence out in the interior.

Asrira felt that to fully understand Baunairi people we needed to understand why they lived where they live. What better way to understand that than by looking at those who serve as their first line of defense? Our next article by our resident military expert will be discussing the lifestyle of these hardened fighters and their never ending battle to protect the cities of their nation.

"Seeing the violence in Brazil caused solely by the actions of Brazilian communists and their supporters, the illegitimate regimes of West Africa and Mattopia-Carribea, as well as the instability and destruction they dealt to our own nation during the Civil War, We thus outlaw all Communist and Socialist parties, as well as any other leftist parties that follow a similarly destructive ideology," declares His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Peter I.

"Members of Parliament following one of the now-banned parties will be removed from office and their seats put up for a snap election. Excessively moderate or imperially loyal members may apply for imperial amnesty, which will be granted if they have a track record of proper voting and transfer their party loyalties to an appropriately moderate party. Those who refuse the decree may be arrested."

It was a dark day in Cyon. The beloved Imperator, Tiberivs Jvstinivs Remington III, had passed on into death, the undiscovered country. The whole nation mourns his loss, as he had worked tirelessly to establish peace and stability in the Imperium. He had, as his predecessors before him, adopted a very relaxed foreign policy. He had restored the Imperium to good favor with many of its traditional allies, and had been a force for good thorought his long and prosperous reign.

The funeral was dark and somber. There were several speeches by the Imperator's friends and aides, followed by a musical number by the Imperial Academy Orchestra and Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The pallbearers wept as they carried the casket of their beloved Imperator to his final resting place.

Now his son, Jvlivs Jvstinivs Maeleric, will inherit the throne. Many Cyonians wait with bated breath for his public announcement, which will set the tone for his reign. Even while still the heir, he was rumored by some to be a little extreme in his ideology. No one is quite sure what to expect, but neither is anyone overly anxious. The new Imperator is inheriting a very strong tradition of international peace and goodwill.

The sun beats down on the large crowd, all gathered outside the palace to hear the words of their new Imperator. The press is anxious to ask him questions, and everyone is speaking in excited but hushed voices. Everything goes quiet as the great doors above the balcony are opened wide. Imperator Jvlivs comes out in customary Imperial decadence and splendor. The sun reflects off the gold and platinum-infused professional tie he wears. His countless rings sparkle in a dazzling display of light.

"Fair citizens of Cyon! Buenos dias. Today, I am here to express my profound gratitide for the opportunity I have to serve you as Imperator. I assure you, the Imperium will reach new heights! For centuries, we have been deemed dross. We have been the laughing stock of the nations. However, I assure you that that ends now. We are not a puppet, meant to be thrown around like a toy and discarded at the fancy of others! Nein! ¡Somos Los Cyonianos! I will again make Cyon into the shining jewel she was always meant to be. That is my oath."

The press is, by this point, practically frantic to ask questions. One reporter beats the others to the punch: "Imperator Maeleric, you have stated that others are treating us like puppets. You have said we are the laughing stock of the world, but it seems as if you have someone in particular in mind as you say this. If I may ask, whom do you find guilty of humiliating us in this way?

The Imperator simply smiles, grabbing a small glass of water from a side stool on the balcony. He sips it, drinking in both the refreshing water and the anxiety of his new subjects. "Socialists."

His Imperial Majesty, Emperor of Venus, agrees with the Imperator Jvlivs Jvstinivs Maeleric. Socialism, of late, has become a swiftly-spreading ideology, overtaking the formerly monarchic regimes in Mattopia-Carribea, West Africa, and causing discord in Brazil. Socialists further tried to conquer Venus for their blood-red empire. His Imperial Majesty and all Venus are pleased to see that there is a leader in Cyon willing to fight socialism in all its forms.

This is another example of the tyranny of the usurpating, tyrannical regime on Venus. They take a look at the few groups still desperately trying to represent and act for the betterment of, and with, the people of Venus - and decide that they are an existential threat to the parasitic noble, capitalist, and fascist classes of their regime.

This war on, ban on, these parties is simply a reflection of the hate and fear that they feel towards the People of Venus, and should be an outrage to any democratic, free people.
