Lands and Territories (Geography):
- North Valles Mariners: An exceedingly wet land possessing something of an inland sea, known to locals as Jaekon. This gash of ocean is the source of all potable water in this province, and is among the most ecologically diverse regions in the solar system. The life here has adapted to unique abiotic stimuli, such as low salinity, and moderately warm temperatures. The southern portion of this region is slightly tropical, with rainforests dominating the landscape for miles. They are inundated with high amounts of water, with the local tides and brackish water conditions making it a geographic marvel. The northern portion appears very similar, however, it is a much more riparian landscape, with thousands of rivers draining into this inland sea. The coastline is Mediterranean in climate and wildlife.

- Auqas Foruitus: This region's geography owes much to the massive lake to it's north. Lake Khali-Denj is one of the most defining features of Mars, shaping the environment of this planet for thousands of miles. In relation to Foruitus, it's humidity constantly washes over this land, and provides it with ample rainfall. The summers are cool and serene, while the winters are cold and moderated. This is an area where weather extremes are uncommon, but is times of intense heat or cold, often times due to changes in lake humidity, the environment can become very brutal. Lake Khali-Denj has the most biodiversity of any lake in the solar system. It is also a major highway for ships in the region, making its ports among the most lucrative on the planet. Agriculture isn't big here, but fishing and undersea mining are.

- Terras: This is a dry land, far removed from any sources of humidity and wetness. It is not necessarily desert, but arid conditions are very present, and are a constant influence on the culture, infrastructure, and economy of this region. There is barren, metal-rich foothills, small dunes of sand, and rock formations spread across the country for as far as the eye can see. Nonetheless, the soil along a single river in the East is a source of immense agricultural wealth. It enriches the soil and makes the production of crops relatively easy. This region of Terras, which accounts for less than 30% of its surface area is responsible for nearly half of all domestic food production in Techabar.

- Circus Planus: Receiving decent among of rainfall generated by Lake Khali-Denj, and straddled by several small mountain ranges to its east, it boasts a savannah-like environment that is wet enough to boast bountiful life and sustainable enough to be a home for humans. Circus Planus shades into arid desert in the south, but this is largely dependent on the season and the mists that emanate from Khali-Denj that year. It is a flat land, with few rivers and lakes to dot the landscape and diversify its features. Circus Planus is rich in metals. It lies upon vast beds of metals and gems that were formed by lava flows millions of years ago. Nelumbo is also rich in minerals, and given Techabar's nominal ownership of that region, our miners frequently work there as well.

- Nelumbo: Known across Mars as "The Land of a Million Lakes", Nelumbo is a unique territory unlike any other. Mars' weak magnetosphere made it very a very easy target for large asteroids to strike. Over millions of years, craters as large as nations dotted Mars, most noticeably in Nelumbo. During initial colonization, these huge craters were filled with water to create hundreds of lakes. Some lakes are 400 miles around. The land around these lakes are fertile and wet, with year round warm temperatures. However, outside these rings of green the land is arid, and dominated by rifts and arid conditions in most places. There's a corridor between 2 big lakes that is relatively wet and arable.

- Rellakh: An immensely diverse land that juxtaposes a variety of landscapes and ecoregions. In the north, along its border with North Valles Mariners, tranquil territory predominates, complete with canyons, small mountains, bushveld-like land and lazy rivers. In the central area, Lake Summerset is the most defining geographic feature, its humidity and mists clashing with dry winds from the other side of the planet. The coast of Lake Summerset is dominated by rugged hills and coastal plains, that slowly give way to dense forests of pine. For around half the year eastern Rellakah is a cold land dotted with pine forests, for the other half, it is a dry land. Westwards from Summerset, the hills and wet plains transform into flat grassy areas. Here, short grass plains, highland catchment forests, savanna woodlands, montane long grass plains and high open moorlands shift into and out of each other until turning into dry savannah in Nelumbo.

- Preyasht: A harsh region where tundra, bog and forest are the most prominent features. Massive trees grow here, bolstered by the nutrient rich mists that roll off the lakes Khali-Denj and Summerset. The tundra can convert to a sizeable steppe during the short summer, making it a haven for migratory animals. The cold swamps, if drained would sustain a lot of agriculture and industry.

- Waresoht: An intermediary between the great aridity that pervades Nelumbo and Circus Planus and the green that dominates Lesta and the Costas. It boats an environment not too unlike Africa's Sahel. It's a seasonal grassland that shades into rainforest towards the west as it begins to border North Valles Mariners. It's northeast is mountainous and woody, serving as humidity catchers, which is then dispersed northward. There are also prominent swamps bordering the many crater lakes.

- Lesta: Fresh rains from the western ocean and Lake Khali are trapped in this land by mountains and hills along with depressions caused by crater impacts. The result is a quasi-subtropical environment. It is prime agricultural land. Aside from this, there are extensive river systems emanating from the Costas, which slice through the countryside. Massive forests shroud the central and eastern portion. The western portion possesses both a humid subtropical and highland subtropical climate possible due to the sporadic appearance of mountains and a gash of hills and depressions in the north that trap humidity and send it flowing down the slopes.

- Costas Planus and Ira: Both have a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, in which they have hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This climate makes them great wine country. Off the coast there are hundreds, if not thousands of tiny islands whose climate and biogeography aren't to different from say Sicily or Corsica. They form an impressive archipelago in which undersea coral forests and such prosper. Further inland, the land becomes wetter, largely due to large crater lakes increasing precipitation. The land begins to shift into humid subtropical climate conditions as they border Lesta. The south of Costa Ira is much wetter than the rest of the Costas, and is a dense rainforest.

- First Baun (France): The nuclear war drastically altered the geography of France, with nuclear warheads severely flattening some areas, while creating deep caverns in others. The fallout also lead to the alteration of the climate. The north and northwest it is more hilly and mountainous, and therefore more windy and cooler, with cold to moderately cool temperatures prevailing most of the year. These areas are prime lands for the growth of forests, which cover 20% of metropolitan Bauna. Rainfall isn't too bad, and drought isn't too common either. However, this is mostly due to our manipulation of the weather and climate rather than something natural. In the south, many pockets of land have become sub tropical to tropical. The coastline is dry and Mediterranean, and therefore amazingly sunny. However, towards the border with Spain, this dry coastline shades into light desert and savannah, which is well integrated into the infrastructure and development of communities along the coast, which adds to the incredibly diverse, dynamic architectural style unique to Baun.

- Korhal: A cold, dry land defined by jagged terrain and icy hills. A vast mountain range straddles the upper portion of this region, blocking the moisture-filled airs of the northern seas from washing over. Craters fracture the landscape and snow is relatively common. During the occasional wet season, bogs and mats of moss grow over them, which is used by farmers and nomads alike. Air is thin and the winds are biting, with frosty temperatures leaving little besides big game, lichen, and grass. The soil is blood red, which is very reminiscent of early Mars before terraforming. There do exist a handful of oasises caused by exceptionally large craters.

- Yurameht: A region comprised mostly of snowy mountains with woods in large canyons, short fertile river valleys dead-ending in salty lakes, and deep crater-oases. Unique phenomena known as ice deserts also exist here. They're patches of ice located in between the reasonably large amount of greenery, composed of snowy ground on top of rough soil. They can stretch for miles and have just as little worth as actual deserts.

Capital City: Oorvale (pop 120m)
Other Major Cities:
Rosealba's Garden, a biotech juggernaut (pop 115m)

Government Type:
There is a basic government structure, where most power lies with our law-making body, known as the Tribunal of Adjudicators. It is a Parliament-like legislature that engages in a variety of different governmental functions from deciding foreign policy to fiscal management, from bureaucratic nominations to military deployments. There are 1000 Adjudicators who make up the Tribunal, 10 from each of the 100 districts that make up the entire nation. While there are 12 official regions, there are 100 districts, who electronically vote in their Adjudicator. There are over 120 officially recognized political parties in Baun, with 5 having high levels of influence, and 3 having moderate influence. As a result, there is a heavy emphasis on cooperation and coalition building within the Tribunal to get each party's ideas passed through a bill. This maximizes the need for excellent oratory and amazing usage of language, which is something all Adjudicators excel in. The way one weaves words and implies things in both literal and poetic terms is a very important measure of political skill and can earn an Adjudicator preference in their party and the love of their voters. In fact, a debate between two Adjudicators is a spectacle to offworlders who get to see the nearly Shakespearean applications of words and phrases.

There is an executive branch that can accept or veto bills from the Tribunal and can propose its own as well as veto legislature and a judicial branch that interprets the law and its fairness. The executive branch is headed by a Premier and what most would call his/her glorified assistant, the Chancellor. While in the past it was customary for politicians to have terms, each serving a total of 8 years, with 3 terms available to them, Premiers are afforded lifelong terms or at least until they get sick of the job. Few have served their whole life, but there are many who have served for at least 100.

We have a relatively centralized government, but this noticeably does not extend to economic policy or even social policy in some respects. The Premier can propose legislature, declare states of emergency, appoint secretaries and ambassadors, and form new committees. However, some of these actions must be approved by the National Tribunal, the national legislature. Local governments can make laws for their local constituents, however, they have less freedom in doing so, but both strive to protect and guide the people, who enjoy a large range of rights and privileges. Freedom is a focal point of Techabar social, economic, and governmental institutions.

Population Information:
Current Population: 1,532,285,631 (as of 4632)

Labor Force:
Agriculture, Fishing, Forestry: 16.1%
Manufacturing, Mining, Technical, Construction: 33.2%
Management, Doctorial: 19.5%
Domestic Labor: 20.9%
Miscellaneous Work: 10.3%

Demographics:
Ethnic Demographics (Non Native Martians):
*Non-native Martians, "true" or "ethnic" Baunairi as they often say, make up roughly 50% of the total population. The original Baunairi homeland was France, but for centuries it was politically and culturally connected Northwestern Africa, so "ethnic" Baunairi are in fact very diverse physically and culturally.
White Baunairi Type 1 (Ethnically French/British)- 30%
"Moorish" Baunairi (mixed, mostly with Arab and African)- 20%
Arab Baunairi(Ethnically Maghrebi Arab)- 15%
White Baunairi Type 2 (typically Norsemen, Germans, Spaniards)- 10%
Black Baunairi (Sub-Saharan African)- 8%
Berber Baunairi (Berber)- 7%
Other (typically Asian, mostly Pacifican)- 3%

Ethnic Demographics (Native Martians):
*Native Martians comprise the other 50% of the population, the vast majority of whom are Szalchian. They are groups (humans included) who arrived/evolved on Mars long before the "ethnic" Baunairi arrived. They also developed distinct cultures and even genetics from those on Earth. As a result, they have developed their own self-defined ethnic divisions outside the context of Earth's. In fact, because of how much more diverse they are, only species/broad cultural groupings will be estimated, not their various ethnic divisions.

Szalchian- 46%
Grey-skinned descendants of Tamil explorers who came before the Great Collapse who founded a technologically advanced society on the hidden third moon of Mars. Known for creating structures out of whitesteel, a resilient form of ice only found on that moon. An apocalyptic biohazard caused them to flee the majority of their home, most people settling in western and southern Baunair, which is very similar in geography and climate.
Martisian- 15%
Mediterranean French colonists who separated from Baunair a thousand years before the move to Mars. Founded their own cult based around worship of the Death God Janisis, who imbues his soul into every person to give them life. Once enemies of Baunair, many refugees from their region of Martis came to avoid internal conflict/holy war. Spread Janisism to many other groups, in particular Szalchians most recently.
Rellakhan- 10%
Non-humans who evolved on Mars in the Rellakh region. Once 8 feet tall with pale skin and jet black hair, prolonged interaction with "ethnic" Baunairi means few "ethnic" Rellakhans still exist. Nonetheless, this species is known for the hyperintelligence of its members as well as their advanced domed cities. Still very politically influential in their native region, with Premier Jawad Tammertert having started his political career there as a Rellakhan city chancellor.
Korhali- 5%
Non human native Martians. Red skinned, four-armed nomads from Korhal, who worship a sun goddess and are known for their highly advanced mechanized transport. Practiced incredibly ritualized warfare more akin to jousts than open conflict, and were utilized by many native Martians as mercenaries and raiders. Still operate nomadic bands to this day, this time travelling all across the nation.
Nelumboan- 4%
Another non-human native Martian species. Subterranean builders who have 3 eyes and are naturally blind. Once frequently fought Korhali hordes and Martisian jihadists. Vast underground communities based around cultivation of a hallucinogenic fungi they use as a food source. Considered the oldest "species" on Mars, but also among the most secretive. Renowned for "insectoid" underground architecture.
Hybrid- 20%
Those who are a mixture of both non-native and "true" Baunairi ancestry. Like "Moorish" Baunairi, there are many different subcultures within this group that incorporate elements from the groups that comprise them. Also very physically diverse, with it not being uncommon to see a Baunairi with say 3 golden eyes, patches of red skin, and an extra arm. Even within the family, phenotype will vary dramatically if native-martian blood is present, due to its randomness. Note, this term is generally applied to those who's parent or grandparent are visibly non-native. Most Baunairi, regardless of origin, have some non-native ancestor, leading them to only minimally express "alien" traits, and as such they do not get classified as hybrids.

Religious Demographics:
Bauno Christian- 20%
Muslim- 30%
Janisist- 35%
Atheist- 5%
Native African/Berber Faiths: 3%
Other Native Martian Faiths: 7%

Advantages:
- Wealth: Internal development and economic investment drove growth for many years. Construction and a renaissance in local manufacturing provides strong, stable jobs to citizens and boosting budgets. While a lack of investment from Mobius has been hard on some since secession, significant wealth transfers and debt pay offs mandated by the High Council have staved off the worst, and made the shift of millions of people quick, effective, and fair. Trade is growing exponentially, however, protectionist policies are being installed to shelter our industries from being swamped by more established enterprises overseas. Therefore, trade is important, but no longer essential to the economy. Nonetheless, Baunair is among the wealthiest societies in the galaxy, with its citizens enjoying among the highest quality of life.
- Cultural Power: Being the direct transplant of some of Old Earth's most influential cultures, Baunair is a cultural superpower possessing tentacles that stretch far across this galaxy. From language to cuisine to architecture, it is a part of a cultural legacy that is nearly unrivaled in historical significance and current staying power. Useful for diplomacy and trade, especially with NPCs.

Disadvantages:
- Crime: The criminal element is very engrained in the economy, political system, and military. Many gangs, cartels, and crime families smuggled members onto the massive ships transporting people to Mars, or funneled them into the nation through Valles Mariners, where crime lords ruled unopposed during Ragnarok. These operatives engage in a variety of illegal activities such as drug trafficking, prostitution, arms trading, illegal crop selling, etc. These collective industries represent hundreds of billions of dollars every year and result in a lot of murder. Baunair is highly rated on international lists ranking quality of life, but is also highly rated for murders and assaults per capita.
- Splinter-Prone Society: The ethnic and cultural diversity of the people of Baunair can at times be a hindrance to development. Many disparate peoples from around the galaxy who have forged unique identities are being brought together. Then there is the added integration of native Martian peoples like those from Korhal, Martis, and Rellakh. Thus, differing values, ways of life, and cultures are coming into contact, which can lead to tensions flaring. Riots and such may not be uncommon in the future and aggressive rhetoric from politicians should be expected. There is also a class divide as well. To an extent wealthier Baunairi directly from Earth are forming an elite class over those from the colonies.

Military of Baunair

Postby kingpie3 » 03 Jan 2016, 23:24

Army:
The Baunairi army is incredibly modern and entirely professional. It has received staggeringly high funding in recent years and has been renovated with new cutting edge technology and brutal training methods to make it a highly refined, very powerful defensive force. Up to Mobian standards, one would be correct to state that members of the Baunairi armies receive bionic and genetic enhancement to make them more effective and deadly. The exact details and adjustments made are under wraps, however, it is well documented that soldiers are on average more mentally developed, stronger, energy efficient, and have better reflexes among other things.

Basics (Shamelessly stolen from DCB):
5 Armies
Each has:
- 1 Major general
- 5,000 Commanders
- 500 divisions, each with 5,000 men
- 1,000,000 Servicemen
- 5,000 SVD-36's (Light Tank)
- 2,000 HS-43's (Medium Tank)
- 1,000 Imperial's (Heavy Tank)
- 2,000 Assorted Stuff (Carriers, Trucks, Medical Vehicles, Mechas, Etc.)

5 Elite Divisions (Different from Special Ops): Each has 2,000 troops with several HFPE genetic enhancements and weaponry
TBA

20 Heavy Transport Divisions: Each has 2,000 infantry, 50 "Q67-Slaren transport vehicles", 18 "Zawia-class heavy transport", "20 Yoshera AA pieces v2"
10 Light Transport Divisions: Each has 1,000 infantry, 100 "Q67-Slaren transport vehicles", 20 " Chiyas-class light transport", 15 "Lufix-class AA pieces v2",
15 Medical Divisions: Each has 500 medics accompanied by 500 troops, with 5 "Q67-Slaren transport vehicles", 10 "Sleepy-class medic stations"

Air Force:
Without a doubt the most diverse, potent and developed sector of the military, the Air Force is the pride and joy of most Baunairi and a huge honor to become a part of. Equipped with a range of strange and powerful weaponry, this branch our military is noted for its vastness, firepower, and stealth. Drones are also a huge component of this branch. Soldiers are given highly specialized genetic enhancements to make them more precise in their shooting, and more comfortable at extreme heights. They can perform amazing trick shots at high altitudes and speeds most other air forces envy.

Basics:
10 Aviation Dragoons:
Each has:
- 2 High Captains
- 5,000 Chief Officers
- 250,000 Airmen

- 10 Spirit-class 519 (stealth bomber)
- 5 Sepoe-241 (drone mothership)

Additional Divisions
25 Tami-class Drone Swarms:
100 Korhali Drone Demons:
3,000 Janisis' Sin Herders:
75 Sheltian Drone Swarms:
94 Bala-class "Dragon" Packs:

Sea Navy:
Admittedly our weakest branch of the military, our navy suffers from a lack of R&D, an over-reliance on old Pacifican models, and general lack of investment in favor of the army and the air force. Much of this has to do with the fact more that most of the nation is landlocked and the only real places where naval dominance is needed is Lake Khali-Denj and the Northern Sea. That's not to say the Baunairi navy is one to be trifled with. Bolstered by used, but powerful Pacifican models, and the ingenious tactics of admirals, the navy is technologically and strategically competent enough to hold its own against any similarly sized force intent on causing harm. Submarines are also incredibly advanced as to protect our undersea dependencies and regions. The Navy also has received supplemental support from the Gold Order, a Baunairi military guild focused on genetically modified beasts of war and biotechnology. The Aquatic Bestiary Corps is also incredibly important to naval supremacy.

Trade and Commerce: 8%
Government Operations: 8%
Foreign Aid: 4%
Miscellaneous: 4%

Total Expenditures: 48.9 trillion CC (100 billion surplus yearly)
Treasury: 30 trillion

Key Industries:
Mining
A several trillion dollar industry sustaining many jobs. Compared to Earth, Mars is a virgin planet with mineral resources yet to be discovered. Reserves that will last for thousands of years have been uncovered and explored to enrich the nation. It is also a competitive industry, as mandated by the government. Local communities in various different regions may have 2 or 3 companies vying for control of the mines. Technology is advanced, owing to designs created on Earth by Baunairi to quickly and efficiently extract resources from the ground. Baunair also has a significant amount of interest in foreign mining industries such as in West Africa.
Luxury Goods
Various government projects and incentives over hundreds of years made Clay-Baunair the center of upper class goods production in the galaxy. The foods, toys, and other petty things of the galaxy's rich and famous were born and built in Clay-Baunair. Baunair inherited that legacy, becoming a luxury goods exporter in the same veil. With new cultural influences and many of the same scientists from Earth, Baunair's wealth is synonymous with the elite goods produced and sold all over the worlds. These luxury goods generally consist of artisan goods pulling on techniques unique to Baunair, as well as biotechnology and products related to entertainment such as video games and cuisine. Often, these different products are related, as Baunairi technology often blurs the line between biotech and fields like computer tech/entertainment.
Tourism
A diverse land home to some of the most rare and interesting cultures in the galaxy, Baunair is a major tourist attraction. With the exotic allure and vibrancy of its land and people, tourism represents a multi-tillion dollar industry. As national parks are being established and entertainment districts are being integrated into the cities, tourism will only grow as more people learn of the originality, diversity, and age of Baunair's land and people.

The Frontier Regions
- There are currently about 3 million Baunairi that live outside official borders in unclaimed lands. They generally do seasonal work such as farming or hunting wild animals. There is some light industry here as well, generally consisting of underground factories along the border, or small semi-artisan facilities and shops. Aside from agribusiness and light manufacturing a valued aspect of the Baunairi presence in the frontier regions is the trade with several peoples in unincorporated regions all over Mars. This trade allows Baunairi merchants and manufacturers to sell their goods and services to an additional market of millions of native Martians in the western and northern reaches of Mars. An interesting aspect of frontier interaction is the Martis region, which has been incorporated by the Martian Restoration League to facilitate socio-economic integration between Baunair and the natives through development programs.

Miscellaneous Sources of Income (HFPE):
As has been stated before, the criminal element is reasonably ingrained in Baunairi society and has a solar system wide presence. Located deep in the Baunairi diaspora and in Baunair itself, various criminal empires based around trades in drugs, liquors, people, and more abound. The profits made constitute a shadow industry that amounts to billions every year. Much of the money earned goes in the hands of the Baunairi government officials and mayors who support this industry under the table in return for hefty kickbacks. Or the money is funneled directly into the treasury. About 30 billion additional funds are made every year that no official investigatory bodies can account for.

Trade
As stated before trade is a useful way by which Baun an raise incomes and increase exports. Despite efforts to reduce reliance on foreign economic interaction early after the move to Mars, the profits accrued by citizens and the government have led to a renewed emphasis on trade and commerce across the worlds. The separation between Baunair and Mobius has opened up a new chapter in Baunairi trading relations, and with the subsequent move to Mars, the state of trade is entirely different from a mere millennia ago. Most of the goods Baunair exports consists of advanced biotechnology to smaller nations such as the PCG and Cyon, luxury goods to the worlds' elite and famous, and large scale industrial products like airships and subterranean vehicles.
Current Trade Volume by Nation-
Sybus- 28%
PCG- 23%
Mobius- 13%
Union of Mattibean Communes- 12%
URMA- 10%
Cyon- 7%
Venus- 7%

Baunair is an urban nation at its core, so the few rural dwellings do exist are culturally isolated and nations onto themselves in many regards. This town and several others like it are primarily engaged in natural agriculture, growing many different crops from Earth and Mars for domestic consumption. As such, vast arches of vibrant greenery are present throughout the city, growing food through a variety of manners such as atmospheric hydroponics and urban fountains. Towns are large and home to few skyscrapers that aren't in some way devoted to religion or vanity. Vast underground quarters are also present, home to even more food production and the elusive secret societies that define much of rural Baunairi social life.

Though recently superseded by Janisism as Baunair's largest faith, the Bauno Church exercises tremendous influence over all Baunairi in terms of customs, holidays, and even politics. Valenti Nom is the physical manifestation of that, a holy beacon on the western side of Drilandogu, Circus Planus. Regarded as one of the greatest structures in the history of the cosmos, Valenti Mon was founded after Baunair was interdicted from the Catholic Church due to money laundering by the government. A Catholic priest by the name of Franco Tollo created the Bauno Church to feed the spiritually malnourished souls of his people. Erecting a series of hovering techno-organic platforms, he connected them in a historic ceremony that declared a new world religion. After the cathedral was moved to Mars, it was rapidly built upon, only adding to its extravagance and beauty. This has not stopped the even more rapid spread of Janisism in Baunair, leading the Church to take more conservative social stances on subjects like nomadism, non-human Baunairi, and polygamy. Capable of housing up to 2 million souls, Valenti Mon is ideally a place of refuge for the poor and healing for the sick, home to arguably the greatest surgeons in the worlds. It has quickly integrated prototypes of hard light generators, which when mixed with virtual reality, creates the strongest feelings of euphoria and closeness to God anywhere.

History, Culture, and Society

The Collapse of the Old Order:
Memory of this event and the actions that led to it are blurry at best. Over 1000 years of lost time and information has led recounting of Old Earth society and politics difficult to do. This period has been known to academics as the Blank Period. But there is some knowledge that has been gained, especially as it relates to Baunairi involvement in the happenings of the past. Our ancestors, the original Baunairi, called themselves the French and British respectively. By the 22nd century their nations of France and Great Britain were great powers with illustrious histories as traders and conquerors of Earth. They were allied to an even greater power known as the United States, who were a part of a pact to procure resources from a land known as Iran. In self-defense against a rival pact consisting of nations known as China and Russia and at the urging of a pact with African and South American nations like Nigeria and Argentina, nuclear missiles were released, killing most humans on Earth. At this time, Northwestern Africa was populated largely by Arabs, and divided into nations known as Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and Mali. The 1st two countries had been conquered by Spain and France, forced to feed these countries oil. As economic issues worsened back home, many immigrants from those European countries entered NW Africa.

The Blank Period:
An important subject to touch on is the demographic shifts that occurred during this time period. North Africa became an increasingly diverse region, despite all the poverty and destruction. Southern and Western Europeans fled across the acidic Mediterranean hoping to find freedom and safety in the deserts. While many perished during the journey, for the 1st few hundred years a steady flow was sustained. From the south, Africans began their own exodus. Exacerbated ethnic issues in various places culminated in great conflict and aggression against many peoples. Hoping to find peace across the desert, many made the perilous trip through the Sahara in search of peace. The Berber populations also exploded as they began to take more pride in their native culture and began forming ethnic exclaves in the few agriculturally productive regions. Their population exploded as a result. By the time the world sees new nations, North Africa is a changed place of new diversity. This new society was poor and rugged, with conflicts over food rife all over. No central government took hold, but small bands of people largely along ethnic lines dominated.

France and Britain lost most of its population as it was hit directly with nuclear missiles by Russia. The survivors proceeded into underground bunkers that their governments created a few years before. They would only begin moving out of their concrete cells a mere 300 years before the establishment of Cyberain (England) after genetic testing made them able to withstand Earth's greater radioactivity. Up until then, they were a shy people, who were forced to collaborate in every facet of life to survive. Upon moving out the bunkers, the people of France were notably behind the people of Britain. The latter had developed new technologies during the Blank Period, and was beginning to create semblances of organized society, while the former were left with rubble and conflict over resources. The British peoples conglomerated into a new nation known as Cyberain some 1000 years after the Collapse of the Old Order. The French would not consolidate into a big government, but by the time Cyberain was a growing nation on the world stage they were prolific traders and merchants throughout Europe. They traded various goods to the wealthy elites of Europe and were avid travelers. To some even Nomads.

Runescape Years:
This is well-trodden historical material. Therefore it won't be discussed in depth... ;)
Cyberain experienced massive economic and military growth. It was a global superpower without equal until the London Pact it forged with other powerful nations dissolved. Global economic/political inactivity and weakness led to a collapse of the advanced civilization. Not necessarily a violent downfall, but a silencing of the government and decreased prestige. The British Isles were absorbed into Mobius not long after...

The French were unified several times by various conquerors, trade barons, Cyberain, and other European powers. They would never come to dominate the world stage as their brothers in Cyberain did. However, the new identity they were forming made them strong and capable. Years of travel and fighting at the point of their integration into the international system made them effective in a variety of roles. Valued as traders, bankers, mercenaries and more, they had a reputation for intelligence and skill throughout the world. Centralized city-states and trade regions were being established all throughout France, creating the 1st examples of native political consolidation. For short times, the entirety would be unified, but the governments would dissolve or be overthrown.

Like the people of France, the peoples of North Africa were often the subjects of powerful empires or petty rulers. As the need for large amounts of oil was diminished as the Runescape nations found renewable sources of energy, North Africa was looked at as a backwater. It's citizens were best ruled iron handedly, with little local autonomy. They were given bureaucratic jobs and forced into the mines of Mali and Mauritania at various points. However the coast was a burgeoning network of largely European entities investing in new industries. All in all, North Africa saw some economic and political development under the control of various powers, so by the time it was independent, it was a loose network of city-states, oases, and underground dwellings engaged in trade and occasional warfare.

The Founding of Technische and Integration into Mobius:
The second Baunairi nation to come into being was Technische. Founded by a woman believed to be of Cyberain-French descent, she was a prominent leader of the city-state of Lyon. After having her political rivals murdered she embarked on a political expansion that soon covered all of France. Utilizing trade deals, subterfuge, murder, and her charms she found the loyalty of millions of men and women looking to turn their region into a global power. Because by this point Marseille was by far the wealthiest of any region in France, the capital was moved there to facilitate growth. Technische was a noble nation rooted deeply in the culture of their predecessors, but shaped greatly by new cultures and peoples who moved within it, like Mattopian merchants or Mobian fishermen. There was also a conscious effort to distinguish themselves from the French of the Old Order and become new and original in their politics and culture.

Technische declared itself a sovereign nation at an inopportune time. The Paction War between the Kingston and Capitol Pacts had begun, bringing conflict to Europe. As the battlefields of Europe were bloodied by Mattopian and Audorian weapons, Technische remained frail and isolated. The government was beginning to rationalize several bad scenarios during the course of war: In order to gain more resources, a warring power would conquer Technische, or in the event one power lost, to compensate Technische would be conquered. These legitimate fears wracked the Assembly (legislative arm) for a few years before a decision was made to integrate into Mobius. This would provide an immediate shroud of protection over Technische and her people, as well as economically help the nation by finding new markets as Europe warred. After quick deliberation, Technische was a full fledged member of Mobius...

-----------------------------
General Cultural Landscape: Baun is incredibly diverse, with many cultures spread across our continent sized lands. We are a nation whose culture indicates we are both an exotic modern spectacle as well as a reminder of days long past. While we are in more ways than one a nation of immigrants, we are also a historical pureblood who beautifully juxtaposes times such as the Renaissance and colonial period with technological modernity and social progressivism. Despite our immense diversity, there are a few cultural strings that persist throughout the nation and diaspora: Think of Eurofuturism and its sleekness accompanied by strong homages to the Renaissance period and Middle Ages with a strong Islamic aesthetic brought by deep Arabo-Berber roots. An undeniable presence of this culture's traditions runs through the nation, deeply affecting the heart of the culture on a variety of fronts, primarily its architecture, linguistics, religion, and art. There is also a robust undercurrent of African influences within the culture at large, which shapes the musical tastes, cuisine, and clothing, asserting the independent traditions of this country's African heritage and its own history, heavily derived from West Africa's Middle Ages and the forest kingdoms of pre-Biblical times. While Brazil heavily mixed Western European and tropical West African culture, Baun principally merges Western European and Arabo-Berber cultures, with strong elements of West Africa's Sahel region to create a highly urbanized, colorful creole culture.

Music: Several styles dominate the airwaves of Baun, mostly R&B, hip hop, and electro house (techno-like pop). These styles generally have an Afro-French twist to them, with a cadence and beat that is more representative of France than say Mauritania. This meticulous merger is incredibly beat driven, with strings and synths aggressively working to compliment the lively style. It is for this reason that Baunairi producers are among the most prized in the world, consistently behind some of the most innovative and groundbreaking sounds in the galactic music industry. However, this ability to create beats is not to be mistaken for an inability to write lyrics, a skill that griots and bards have mastered beyond comparison. Their cultural status in both the European and African provinces on Earth was elevated during the Blank Period as poets and storytellers to the leaders who would arise and fall in the chaos. They were once again recognized as excellent wordsmiths, flawlessly manipulating language. To this day, the griots and bards of Baun enjoy galactic respect and praise as writers and lyricists who participate heavily in the development of Baunairi music. Aside from the main popular styles, other genres possess a moderate and often times regional following, such as gnawa music from Morocco, Corsican music from France, and rock from Britain. There is a popular saying that "Baunairi concerts are like festivals.", which is partially true. Baunian music events and shows are noted all across the galaxy for their bombast, food, and dance, blurring the line between a simple concert and a thunderous festival.

Food: The food of Techabaun is heavily syncretized, merging the styles of Earth and Mars to make a distinctive cuisine. Incredibly important ingredients for essentially every dish is grilled meat (typically chicken, lamb, or pork), rice, sweet potato, and some sort of soup/curry. Fish was once a staple, but with the recent move to Mars there is lack of access to the mass fisheries of Earth, so Baunairi cuisine has adapted accordingly. A major fast food chain is Mayor Huya's, a sandwich place with restaurants all over the galaxy. They have popular sides dishes that include spicy ground sorghum, traditional French fries, and snail biscuits. Their most desired dish is a monte cristo sandwich. There's also a growing chain called Proyura Square, started by a Martisian refugee in Lesta. It specializes in Martisian dishes, such as Zawia stew and rice with the soup of the flame chili. In typical French fashion, Baunairi lunch and dinner can last for up to 3 hours, often in order to complete every course of a meal. Dessert is also unique in Baun. Baunian ice cream and pie are revered all throughout the galaxy for their exquisite construction and taste harkening back to styles from thousands of years ago. However, nuts and fruits like plantain and coconut play a bigger role in the overall taste of Baunairi dessert. A popular dessert is a relatively recent creation known as puff puff, made from a bundle of special caramelized flowers topped with sugar, coconut, berries and ice cream. It is thought to come from the native Rellakhans.

Fashion: Baunairi fashion is noted for its flamboyance and color. Clothes tend to be bright and lightly woven so as to combat the oppressing sun and be comfortable in the heat. Colors are vibrant with an organization that cleans it up and makes it strangely professional. However, the sheer diversity and innovativeness of Baunairi fashion is the reason that Baun is known as the "Fashion Capital of the World". Styles and flavors vary by region, with historic cultural tastes greatly influencing current trends. This is particularly seen in France, which maintains much of its original fashion styles, though moderately mixed with Arab and African aesthetics. Hats are worn prominently and tend to be extremely luxurious, often integrating large amounts of jewels, gold, and feathers to show off one's wealth and status. Capes are back in style in Baun, and are worn by rich and poor alike. Ruffles (displayed in both orthodox and unorthodox ways) are also prominent in dresses and suits. In terms of accessories, purses are still in style, with several brands such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton dominating galactic markets and style of elites. Baun is generally recognized as the center of haute couture and of new trends in style.

The Empire of Venus welcomes the Techabar Federation to the world stage. Embassy swap?

OOC: Jesus, Kingpie, that's a big military! Just counting the divisions and servicemen, you have 30 million under arms, and when you add in the other stuff, you're well over that. You're also turning millions of square miles of wasteland into habitable territory, and somehow maintaining "among the wealthiest societies in the galaxy," even after you lost what are probably the most significant of your trade ties (those with other Mobian member-states) and the vast majority of your land area. I'm not saying you could never have those things, but right now? It just seems a little unfeasible, that's all.

I meant to say 5,000 men in each division. Not 10,000. I copied and pasted my military stats from another post and changed the divisions and men a few times so they're a little fuzzy. But know that generally speaking, I should have around 20 million people in my military, which is only 4% of my current population. I'm actually going to make adjustments later today, so thanks for bringing that up.

On the economics, I made clear while I was in Mobius even without their support Baun was still moderately wealthy and could survive on trade with other nations. A lot of it also had to do with the internal markets I had directly after Ragnarok to make up for a general loss in trade. I did take a hit economically moving to Mars as my GDP and GDP per capita fell significantly, but that's being supplanted by the growth of the country now and renewed trade outside of Mobius. So I think that statement is pretty legitimate.

That makes a lot more sense. That's still a really high GDP per capita, especially for a nation in the process of rebuilding like you are, but whatever. You'll probably grow into that relatively quickly, so whatever.

Yea, as the pop grows and economy expands, it will fluctuate, but settle down at around 60k in the next 30-50 years.
