Corporation Established 3958. Current Date (Standard Calendar)

Our National Anthem: "Limitless in All Directions"

"We acknowledge the shortcomings of those who came before us, but recognise that they aspired to greater things, and so must we. Our ambition should be as boundless, as the canvas of space upon which we must realise those dreams and ambitions... Limitless in all directions."
- Darius Langale, First President of the Phoenix Corporation Group
- Speech given at Selinopolis, following his inauguration by the governing body in 3978

Government type: Progressive Corporate Conglomerate

The Corporation has worked with the indigenous people of Mars, nurturing trust and forging a deep bond with them. The corporation does not view them as a simple workforce, or the mere parts of a machine. We opposed governments to gain our autonomy, just as the Martian people had opposed those who would oppress and profit from them. The Phoenix Corporate Group serves the Martin people because the Martian people are the Corporation.

The PCG also uses it’s own calendar alongside the standard calendar (which is used for trade with other nations).

The Martian Calendar:

The calendar has been adapted to the Martian orbit of 687 (standard) days (roughly double in length to that of Earth) with 24 months of 28 days, that accounts for our slower daily rotation, totalling 672 actual in our calendar.

The Months of the Martian Calendar:

Sagittarius, Dhanas, Capricorn, Makara,
Aquarius, Kumbaba, Pisces, Mina,
Aries, Mesha, Taurus, Vrisha,
Gemini, Mithuna, Cancer, Karkata,
Leo, Asleha, Virgo, Kanya,
Libra, Tula, Scorpius, Ali

The Days on the Martian Week:

Dies Solis - (day of the Sun - on the 1st, 8th, 15th, & 22nd day of every month)
Dies Phobotis - (day of the moon Phobos - on the 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd day of every month)
Dies Terrae - (day of Earth - on the 3rd, 10th, 17th & 24th of every month)
Dies Murcurii - (day of Murcury - on the 4th, 11th, 18th & 25th of every month)

Dies Satarni - (day of Saturn - on the 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th of every month)

The Timing of the Martian Day:

A martian second being 11.2% longer than on earth, with 100 Martian seconds in a “martian minute”*, 100 minutes in a martian hour and 1,000 of these minutes make up a martian day of 10 hours. This calendar was devised for the purpose of the agricultural industry on the planet, but is commonly used throughout all cities due to the nature of its base-10 simplicity.

* the expression 'a Martian minute' is known to be used off-world as commonly referring to something that takes longer than it should (for example, someone with poor timekeeping skills is said to be 'on Martian minutes').

Current Social Climate:

Following the events of the Great Collapse, the PCG, which was largely unaffected by this catastrophe, sought to provide financial aid to the nations affected in an attempt to stabilise the economies of these nations, with over 60 trn donated to the League of Cairo on Earth and to the newly emerging Empire of Venus. This resulted in an operation loss for two financial windows, but this was seen as a necessary stimuli to help provide stability throughout Sol.

The collapse of agriculture on Venus during this time meant the depletion of the corporations food reserves, and placed an increased importance on the re-establishment of Venusian agriculture in addition to the increased importation of South American food produce. This also necessitated the removal of PCG food products from the commercial marketplace as our growing population began to outstrip our agricultural output.

The addition of Firne to the home regions of the PCG has seen an increase in the availability of agricultural land for the corporation, but the settlement of this new region has also seen a small community of new faces join the PCG. A community of 10,000 Nomads have been granted an sanctuary in the mountain ranges of Firne and the corporation has begun to work closely with them on a number of engineering projects, making use of their skills to further benefit our people.

The corporation has also continued to support developing nations during this time and has taken on a leading role in helping the newer nations of South American, establishing them as a economic and politically relevant addition to the international community. More recently, Colombia itself has joined the corporation as it's sixth region, making the PCG a truly interplanetary people sharing universal ideals of peace and plenty.

Histories of the People of Mars and of the Corporation.

Postby jonisilk » 05 Sep 2014, 23:03

History and Culture of the Martian People.

The people who would become the citizens of the PCG are the descendants of simple folk who etched out a living on the newly terraformed planet as part of the first wave of settlers. We have been here since the beginning and we are proud of that heritage.

Hostile though the environment could be, several generations of communities thrived building up trade with one another and creating a larger Martian identity. Many of the population at this time were illiterate and so the importance of oral tradition began to grow. Often a 'teller' - those who know the oral histories of the people - was among the most important members of his community, as it is from history that we must learn if we would avoid the mistakes others have already made.

Though very few could actually read, much care went into the copying of old manuscripts, for the benefit of those who could. The written word was at one time perceived to be of such importance to the people, that individual scraps of written letters and numbers were traded at the higher end of the exchange rate along with precious metals like gold.

The tradition is still highly prized today (only these days, everyone is literate) and the culture of Martian stories, books, poems and plays form a rich and complex tapestry providing in insight not only into the history of the people on this planet (though they should not be viewed as historically accurate), but also a powerful insight into the very nature of our being.

A Martian Teller imbues his stories with ethical overtones, moral undertones and allegorical themes as if it were second nature (which to a Teller, it is). It is a style that speaks to a universal constant within us all as human beings and our stories are prized for this very reason. As such we would be happy to donate to your national archives all of our classical works, that you may find your own appreciation for this unique and inspirational artform.

In these early communities, much time was dedicated to many other arts and crafts, such as fashioning jewellery from the precious metals that came from the mountains. Precious metals that would soon attract men of greed. Over time, many come to exploit our land and peoples, but the rebellious nature of the domestic people has seen them off each time, indeed, a common saying of the time stated that the environment was more hospitable than the natives.

The last such occasion outsiders were banished from the region was after the Massacre of Tar Kehv, 120 years ago, when nearly 3450 miners were slaughtered after refusing to return to work for 8 months in a dispute over pay and working conditions. This caused such an outrage that the people rose up in rebellion and destroyed the corporate mining facility at Len Cago, blowing the entrance to the mine closed, as it remains to this day.

From a technological viewpoint, we became skilled in the agriculture of cold, hard martian soils, and adopted the technology of the corporations that tried to exploit us, though we made few advances of our own when those technologies became obsolete.

The PCG became the first corporation to truly engage with the indigenous Martian people since the Len Cago Uprising. Bringing new technology and working closely with the local population over the several decades, Darius Langale and the corporations original governing body, fostered a trust within the populace toward the PCG that was unique. As a child of Mars himself (born in Nidum, near the Valley of the Shining River), he was able to understand and address the concerns of the people when he returned to Mars, with a Utopian vision his business associates shared.

That vision was of a forward-thinking conglomerate, tired of seeing ambitious long-term projects cancelled by politicians, in favour of short-term strategies to secure short term gains and another term in office. With a continued commitment to the advancement in quality of life for all, the corporation has weaved itself into the fabric of Martian society, becoming a corporation of the people, for the people.

We continue that work today, and endeavour to never lose sight of our goals of bringing peace and plenty, to all.

A History of the Phoenix Corporate Group:

The PCG was founded in the year 3958 (common calender) and was a product of a corporate think-tank opposed to the restrictions placed on them by archaic Martian governments that time-and-again continued to sacrifice long-term ambitions for short term gains, with most of the Martian people content to settle for less, so long as they survived through the winter.

Since the settlement of Mars, some two millennia ago, the history of our planet has been one of false dawns. Many people came, then people left and for the most part, humanity had forgotten about the people who were stayed behind. For many generations we forged out an existence in harmony with a planet that often proved to be less than hospitable, with winter starvation the most common cause of death.

Working together (and unnoticed by the rest of humanity who paid our planet no mind) the people overcame these obstacles and formed their own culture and identity, based around agricultures (for which the Martian calendar was devised by the scholars) but with a strong creative impulse, they had an affinity for artistic expression and drew much inspiration from the beautiful yet unforgiving environment.

Many of the great cities of the older powers short tenures were in ruins, and these ‘frozen cities’ are said to have provided inspiration for the cautionary tales of Kane and Ulagra, but the few that were still populated clung to outmoded profiteering practices, exploiting the people and often ruling with an iron fist.

The PCG is a conglomerate of eight corporations (as represented by the eight Directors who serve on the governing body*) who chose to oppose the governments they served and dared to think beyond mere profit, toward the betterment of life on our planet. We fought hard for our autonomy and once it was won, we turned our attentions to the healing of old wounds by engaging with a population that initially did not trust our motives.

*the number of members of the governing body has recently grown to ten, with the inclusion of the Honoured Council and re-inclusion of the serving President.

Their oppression had hardened their resolve and it took many years for the corporation to engage the hearts and minds of the people, encouraging them to join us and take on a more active role, in taking the first steps toward helping us create a better world for them and their children.

Darius Langale (b3930-d4010) was instrumental in this process and his achievements were honoured when the governing body appointed him the First President of the Phoenix Corporate Group, in 3978 (a position he held until his retirement in 4008). His continued dedication to the Martian people was further honoured by the people themselves, when Langale Province was named for him in 3985. The Presidents continued commitment to peace has also been further recognised on our sister world of Venus, with the naming of both Langale University and the Darius Scout Reservation, in his honour.

More than fifty years after taking those first steps, the PCG had become a beacon of hope for the people and the planet of Mars. In the fall of 3998, the PCG was recognised as a New Power by the nations of our sister planets and played host to the successful Peace Talks of 3999 that concluded with the historic signing of the Treaty of Berrynopolis.

Following the passing of Darius Langale, his daughter, Jenna, become the Second President of the PCG and has overseen the expansion of the Darius Initiative into a universally recognised force for good, and receiving the Medal of Valour in 4045 for her role in defusing tensions during the CRNJ crisis. Further to this, she also sanctioned the Samaritan Fund (to assist developing nations) in the same year and was one of the driving forces behind the formation of the Federation of United Nations (FUN). She surpassed her own father's time in office, in which time she has also raised two sons - Darius (b.4037) and Ethan (b.4040) - with her long-term partner (and PCG Managing Director), Ethan Sohl, who would go on to replace her following her sudden passing due to health complications relating to her accident many years previously.

Ethan would serve only 15 years as President (sometimes referred to as the "caretaker president", though this does great disservice to his own service as managing director to two previous presidents and in the moulding of his own current successor, Anumah Sacian, during his short time in office).

His son's Darius and Ethan, are now official representatives of the PCG to both Venus and Earth respectively.

In peace and plenty, for all.

The PCG.

GDP = pop x average income (1bn x40,000cc)
Income Tax = circa 4 trn cc p/a.

Alongside the recent re-introduction of income tax at 10%, we additionally invest the profits of the corporation back into the nation every year as a Corporate Contribution, to help maintain and improve upon the quality of life for all.

+ 4 trn p/a Tax
+ 2 trn p/a Corporate Contributions
= 6trn p/a to be Allocated

Breakdown of Income Tax and Corporate Contribution Allocations
22% to Applied Technologies Research & Development
24% to Arts and Education (Including Professional Parenting)
24% to Universal Healthcare/Darius Initiative
14% to Phoenix Corporate Peacekeeping Forces & Civilian Peace Officers

+ 2.78 trn cc Mining Profits for End of Period
+ 1.75 trn cc Construction Trade Profit for End of Period
+ 320 bn cc Tourism Profits for End of Period.
+ N/A cc Other Income (hardware re-sale, minus royalties)
=
+ 4.85 trn cc p/a (Total profits)

Balance.

- 3.21 trn cc (Costs)
=
+ 1.64 trn cc (Annual Balance Available)

Below you will find a complete breakdown of our major industries - Mining, Construction & Tourism.

In addition, you will also find information on our Agriculture and our modest media interests (we view media as a vehicle for artistic expression and education, rather than commerce, so the industry has in the past been subsidised during loss making years).

===========================

MINING & CONSTRUCTION

Our mining operations have long been the backbone of the PCG’s economy. Our 2000-strong fleet has provided comfortably for the people of the regions and our success has seen us granted administrative oversight of the mining operations of two South American nations, the CSR and Brazil.

Our fleets standard operating profit is in the region of 3 trn, but most of this (along with Construction and to a lesser degree, Tourism) will go towards providing for the people in the form of corporate contributions and to covering any financial shortages in other industries (such as Media and Agriculture).

PCG MINING
(@ 50% = circa 1.5 billion cc profit x 2,000 Vessels)
+ 3 trn cc p/a (Standard Operating Profit)
+ 80bn cc p/a (Administration Fees paid to PCG)
- 300 bn cc (Mining Fleet Maintenance - to KASM)
=
+ 2,7 trn cc (Total Mining Profit)

We also act as administrators of the mining operations of CSR and Brazil, which has helped provide these nations with stable economies. For our services, we are paid around 10% of net profit annually as an administration fee (rounded down to the nearest billion).

CSR Minerals

CSR Mining Fleet - Bolivar Class (courtesy of KASM)
+ 450 bn cc (sop @ circa 1.5 bn gross profit x 300 vessels)
- 45 bn cc (Fleet Maintenance to KASM )
=
+ 405 bn cc (net profit)
- 40 bn cc (c10% of net profit paid to PCG for administration services)
=
+ 365 bn cc (Profits paid to CSR)

New Brazil Minerals

New Brazil Mining Fleet - Bolivar Class (courtesy of KASM)
+ 450 bn cc (sop @ circa 1.5 bn gross profit x 300 vessels)
- 45 bn cc (Fleet Maintenance to KASM )
=
+ 405 bn cc (net profit)
- 40 bn cc (c10% of net profit paid to PCG for administration services)
=
+ 365 bn cc (Profits paid to New Brazil)

CONSTRUCTION (Marina, Corona, Hywel/Sharp)
Materials/Labour @ 2:1 of emv = production cost + 50% mark up = market price)

General Trade
- 3 trn cc (Total Materials Used @ 3 trn p/a)
- 1.5 trn cc (Total Labour Paid @ 1.5 trn p/a)
=

- 4.5 trn cc (Total Production Cost of All Sales)
+ 6.75 trn cc (Total Sales at Market Prices)
=

+ 2.25 trn cc (Gross Profit for Period)
- TBC - projected as 500bn cc (Total Corporate Sponsorship)
=

+ 1.75 trn cc (Net Construction Profit)

Un-traded materials (approximately half of our annual mining quota), are then made available to domestic Construction outfits. Any materials not used in construction are added to the corporations reserves for civilian building projects. The corporations materials reserves are not allowed to swell as they once did. After the end of year Dividends Festival, all excess materials are donated to local communities.

This can mean that civilian dwellings will often feature rare and precious stones in the interior decorations, seemingly oblivious to their cash value and instead utilising them for purely aesthetic reasons, to create natural interior light and/or to decorate ornate carvings, which are often given as gifts (meaning many of our handcrafts are actually really, really valuable if you were a cynic enough to part with one given to you).

=============================

TOURISM (cc)

Tourism has long been an important part of the PCG’s economy. Our major draws have been the breathtaking scenery of planet and our focus on activity and family-oriented holidays at affordable prices, but there is also a strong pull to the regions, for those who wish to study our history and culture and maybe sit at the feet of Tellers as they teach in the open, or perhaps seek an individual tell for themselves, from one of these multifaceted men and women of wisdom.

We also posses a highly lucrative marine tourism. The PCG does not stop at the shoreline, and with help from Pacifica and other nations, have established ourselves beneath the seas of Mars ocean with our own underwater cities.

About Our Martian Agriculture:

Agriculture on Mars was hard, and it bred hard people, resilient people, to toil an equally hard soil. Mars was not blessed with the rich soils and close proximity to the Sun as our sister worlds, but we rose to the challenge.

As the corporation came to the fore of Martian life in the regions, it’s relationships with other nations began bearing fruit and helped us to tackle our most immediate problems. One such friend of the corporation, then as now, was Sybus, whom we have to thank for the Founding Tree.

As a result of advanced farming methods, GM crops and weather control systems, the regions of Frasta, Elisotil, Firne and Langale Province, contain 78 million acres of farmland between them, annually producing enough food for twice that many (156m) people, but our agricultural heartland is in the region of Tigris Planus, where the Founding Tree is located.

This incredible Tree (planted by our First President, Darius Langale, and other world leaders to commemorate the peace talks that averted a Mobius/Venus conflict), has long been seen as a symbol of the corporations ideals of peace and plenty, for all. Now 450 years old, it’s influence has long been felt in the regions bountiful harvests, boosted by a policy of soil rotation, allowing 36 million acres to easily feed over 110 million annually.

However, it soon became apparent that the soil being rotated was no longer losing it’s potency as it had previously done so, which allowed for the feeding of another 30 million people and saw the rotation policy come to and end around 100 years ago. In the last 100 years, as the Founding Tree has reached maturity, it has had an unprecedented impact not only on the regions agriculture, but also all other vegetation and animal wildlife in the region.

On the positive side, the potency of the soil has increased by a further 50%, allowing this region alone to feed upwards of 250 million people each year. However, a precise crop yield isn’t possible due to certain “environmental factors”.

These “environmental factors” are the rapid encroachment on farming habitats, of increasingly exotic plant and animal wildlife, from an ever advancing canopy of plush green jungle. This has allowed a safe environment for wild animal species, such as the Martian Boar, to flourish (and become a staple of our cuisine), but may pose a possible future threat to surrounding farming communities and their livihoods.

In recent years, it has been noted that a vast array of new spices - plants, insects and small mammals - have been identified and we welcome the scientist and academics of other nations to study and catalogue these wonderful new arrivals with us.

Marine Agriculture:

In addition, we also source responsibly from the Ocean. Fluctuating nets are an early example of the PCG’s adaptation of shielding technology to a selective scan-and-stun process to humanely incapacitate sustainable marine life, long enough that they are then whisked by artificial current to the nearest quality control plant, before being entered into our food chain, feeding around 120 million people each year.

Furthermore, food for an additional 80 million people is annually sourced from Baleen Ranches, who graze at plankton farms in shielded enclosures, protecting them from predators.

It is through importing food from our sister worlds, most notably from Venus and the Terran nations of the South American continent, that we make up the shortfall in our annual harvest and are able to feed our population of 1 billion.

Note: Due to the lack of produce available for export, a small but lucrative black market has emerged for our agricultural produce, with it’s centre in the Elostil region. We do not export our produce for profit when we would rather feed the people with it, but many of the Baunari migrants who moved into agriculture in the PCG (following the events of Ragnarok and the collapse of the great powers), don’t feel quite the same way. For the most part though, we turn a blind eye to it, as we understand this as just another facet of Baunari culture, being just as natural to them as patriotism is to Venusians.

=============================

SACIAN MEDIA ACADEMIES (cc)

Unlike our other industries, our media enterprises are viewed as an expression of art and not as vehicles of commerce (though there is always an eye on the market). Losses may be made in these ventures, but our belief is that the true value of art can often be found in more than it’s cost.

We have two major content producers: The Dream Factory, who focus on commercial/family-friendly entertainment, and the Frasta Entertainment Group, who specialise in high-end/arty forms of entertainment (classic adaptations, documentaries and more educational content)

The profit margins involved in this industry are practically negligible to the corporation and we have been known to prop-up this industry during it's leaner years, as we believe it to be an important medium of artistic expression.

Universal Healthcare / Darius Initiative

Postby jonisilk » 05 Sep 2014, 23:44

Universal Healthcare System.

General Medical Overview:

In 4001, a gene modification program was implemented on a population-wide scale, in association with Binary Helix. This has seen the average life expectancy of a new born rise from between 75-125 years, to possibly double that (currently around 170-200).

It is also estimated that those who received gene modification as adults, can also expect an increase of around a third of their lifespan to their remaining average life expectancy. Actual data on average life expectancy will be revised as population studies bring such information to light.

Much additional investment has gone into the development of medical technologies to further our public healthcare program, which is a non-profit industry dedicated providing the very best possible healthcare to the people of Mars and all other worlds.

Ours is a universal healthcare program. It is free to all, does not depend on residency or citizenship (though citizenship does provide some advantages) and welcomes for treatment all those who could otherwise not afford it.

Private healthcare is also freely available to those inclined toward it, though this private-sector is not regulated by the PCG.

The Darius initiative (D.I.).

The Darius Initiative is a humanitarian operation. Also non-profit, it aims to provide medical aid, food, clothing and shelter to those injured or displaced in time of war. Our principle focus is on the civilian populations in these regions, though injured combat troops of both sides will also be treated without discrimination.

We have commissioned a new Bishops Ring station to be placed in orbit around Mars, which will serve as the operational centre of the Darius Initiative. It also serves as a Medical Academy and the hub of our off-world healthcare plan.

Nightingale Medical Frigate (complete - 5 in active service)

Based on a compartmentalisation technique used in our mining vessels, these gigantic medical frigates will have four large sections capable of detaching from the main body of the frigate, facilitating simultaneous deployment of medical personnel to multiple flash-points on the ground, from orbit.

P.C.G. Industries

Postby jonisilk » 06 Sep 2014, 00:04

Asteroid Mining

The primary industry is the off-world mining of minerals from the asteroid belt. These are broken down into their raw states for trade purposes, or refined by the corporation at their own plants for it’s own requirements. Approximately half of all material - gases, metals, ores - that are mined are sold as standard at their market value, with the rest going to the corporations reserves to supply our various construction industries, with additional reserves being sold at discount on sale or bulk orders.

The corporation now boasts a fleet of 1000 Pheonix Mining Craft - a large, custom-built mining vessel - serviced by a series of customised orbiting stations for both refining and trade purposes, in addition to a versatile Transportation Fleet whose services are often provided gratis on larger orders and longer contracts.

Further significant investment into our mining operations will see our fleet double in size to 2000 vessels as of 4121, as we seek to increase our industrial output in our varied construction fields.

Mining operations:

Bishops Ring Trading/Refining Stations: x 4 (KASM) - 3 Orbiting Mars, 1 Orbiting Earth.

A trading station of Venusian design has been constructed by the RoV, for PCG use, and is in orbit around Venus.

Our trading stations around Earth and Venus are viewed as our embassies on these worlds, though we acquiesce to the laws of both worlds while operating within their respective jurisdictions.

Each Station contains a Master Teller in Residence, who acts as the Ambassador and official representative of the PCG.

Phoenix Mining Craft - Fleet of 2000 from 4021. (KASM)

Our Flagship Mining Vessel, designed and constructed alongside KASM (who currently retain unique tech rights), these large craft are the backbone of the PCG's commercial operations. The innovative design techniques of these craft have so far inspired differing design aspects of both the Phoenix Deep Sea Vessel and our fleet of Nightingale Medical Frigates.

Phoenix Mining Craft - Specs
400 metres long, 75 metres wide and 50 metres thick.
It’s hull is made of industrial-grade CyberArmour, capable of protecting the crew from solar radiation or collisions with asteroids and space debris.
With a nuclear fusion drive, hooked up to advanced plasma propulsion systems, it can reach interplanetary speeds of 0.5c.
A warp drive for interstellar travel reaching up to 55c.
Nantennas collect solar radiation and convert it into energy for the ship to use.
A Limited Matter Transmutation device - to convert any matter into a smaller amount of matter of a different type (eg, can convert less valuable minerals and gases into engine fuel and/or more valuable materials).
There is also an on-board refining centre provided and a decent sensor suite so you can analyze rocks before you send shuttles to mine them.
At the bow of the ship is a Bow Laser, used to cut through hard rock for your mining shuttles to get into the inner workings of larger asteroids.
The ship is compartmentalised, with many rooms and hangars, allowing each room to be given as much life support as neccesary. With this feature, the crew may choose the ratio of storage areas to crew quarters on the fly and also consists of Micro-tasker shuttles (these are tiny, 10-25 meter shuttles that mine a target area - they are automated or remote-operated to get rid of life support systems and allow more room for raw materials).

(capacity 200k tonnes) x 20,000
(capacity 50k tonnes) x 50,000
(capacity 10k tonnes) x 100,000

Tourism

The corporation has also moved into the tourist industry, with one luxury resort at Serene Bay View, and several other activity-based family holiday centres - located at Penybont, Ohjun, Castell, Nidum, Trabanos, Ucia, Uridia and Granog's Land, in addition to our luxury underwater resort, Mediterranea - so others might share in the stunning natural beauty of our planet, as they enjoy those special family moments together.

The Odyssey Class, Deep-Sea Voyager - a family-holiday cruise vessel offering an affordable retreat, with plenty of child-centred activities and groups freeing up ample relaxation time for adults - embarked on her maiden voyage in 4017. The fleet was doubled to celebrate our centenary year (4058) and now numbers 20 vessels.

Also from 4058, the Iliad Class Deep-Sea Voyager took to the ocean. A fleet of 10 Luxury vessels, catering to an exclusive clientele, serving the executive market.

Other important industries are land agriculture and oceanic farming (based in the underwater city, Atlantis), which feed the population. Neither is intensive, meeting the needs of the people and supplying a surplus for trade that has seen our organic produce carve out a niche market for itself.

Agricultural

Crop enhancement developments have enabled a 50% increase in soil productivity in recent harvests. When combined with the Impact of the founding tree - which has doubled this productivity over a 200 mile radius, and soil rotation policies in place to boost annual harvest yield, alongside our algricultural industry and imported food products, allow us to feed the population while also providing a small surplus allowing for a profitable niche market for Martian produce.

Oceanic

Along with our agricultural industry, our oceanic farming industry supplies the other half of annual harvest yield. A radical overhaul of the industry at the start of the last century saw a system put in place whereby humane practises and careful stewardship of our oceans ensure that over-sourcing does not become a problem.

Atlantis (PCG/Pacifica/UCI)

An Underwater City that serves as the centre of the Oceanic Industry on our planet. In line with projected population growth figures, Atlantis has a population capacity of 40 million (now full - capacity increase pending approval).

Fluctuating Nets and Artificial Current Systems (PCG)

An innovative idea based on acquired shielding technologies, generated from 3 anchor points (either at the surface or from the ocean floor) and covering an area of up to 15 square miles, these humane ‘flux-net’ systems are designed to selectively stun only certain sustainable marine life as they pass by, before using an artificial current system generated from below the ‘nets’, along the ocean floor, to transport the stunned prey along to the nearest quality control plant before they regain consciousness. Those that regain consciousness before arrival, simply swim away, unless they are unlucky enough to encounter the nets again.

Plankton Farms and Baleen Ranches (PCG)

These gentle giant whales are vegetarians, almost identical to those that were once found in the oceans of Earth. They will be ‘herded’ within vast shielding enclosures that would keep out other predators, as they move from one plankton farm to the next, protecting their numbers as they feed and breed, until such time as they are fully matured and ready to be harvested as a food source.

Phoenix Deep-Sea Craft Mk 1. (PCG) - fleet size of 20 - complete, in active service - phase two - ongoing study.

A moderately sized scientific vessel (approx 100 x 70 x 40 metres), based on the design of our very own and much larger flagship mining vessel but adapted for use in our oceans. It will carry out a number of underwater mining duties for scientific purposes with a potential view to commercial sourcing of materials if found in sufficient quantities. They also serve as the sentry of the Martian seas, analysing our deepest oceans and recording all data on population sizes and migration cycles as part of our ongoing stewardship of the planet.

Phoenix Construction Enterprises.

A new and exciting business venture that has quickly emerged as our second industry, capitalising on the construction techniques and facilities we have have acquired in recent years.

We provide, high quality, low cost vehicles for public and private sector use, from beneath our oceans to beyond the stars above.

Our Marina Construction Yard in Langale Province (courtesy of Pacifica) has undergone expansion to provide the base of operations for both our aquatic and land vehicle productions, while Corona (constructed in collaboration with The Republic of Pallas), our orbiting construction shipyard, will handle production of off-world vehicles (drawing on the engineering skills and ship-building techniques, acquired from working alongside KASM).

PCPF & Civilian Peace Officers

Postby jonisilk » 06 Sep 2014, 00:20

Phoenix Corporate Peacekeeping Forces

The Phoenix Corporate Forces have undergone a substantial re-modelling and from 4051, have incorporated the word 'peacekeeping' into their name, as this has been the primary duty of all prior PCF (now PCPF) deployments.

All PCPF personnel are issued with both versions of the PCG's 'comfort blanket' technology. The protective 'arch-angel' under-layer, which can also be used to treat minor wounds and injuries on contact with people other than the wearer, while the more common 'guardian angel' (the signature tech of the DI) can be also be used to set up temporary heated shelters in addition to serving as a general medical tool.

Although we favour non-lethal forms of incapacitation, all of our serving forces are fully trained in use of a variety of IHES-4 Combat Suits as standard.

PCPF Hardware: (mostly-HFPE)

IHES-4 Combat Suits:
501,000 x Standard suits
500,000 x with varied upgrades/weapon attachments (pending completion)

TANKS
Paladin x 35000
Aegis x 20000
Patriot x 20000
Archer x 20000
Mk1 HCU x 5000

AIRCRAFT
Mk1 ADIU’s (Spam Drones) x 20000
S4 Nocturne x 1000
D3ATH Reaper Bombers x 400

SPACECRAFT
Guardian Frigate space craft x 1000
Darkstalker Support Frigate x 2000
Justicar Heavy Cruisers x 1000

SPACE FIGHTERS
Star Dancer I fighter x 1200
Star Dancer II fighter x 1100
Glimmer I fighter x 700

Civilian Peace Officers

We still police by consent, not force and though our police are not armed, they do wear protective gear (light infantry suits are worn by those who police the street, the rest dress in a black uniform with red and gold markings - the colours of the PCG)

Holo-fields are often employed to visibly obscure their presence in public places and this has resulted in an increased number of arrests in recent years, especially in the cities, as petty crimes are often unwittingly perpetrated right under their very noses.

Though they may not carry lethal weapons (we do have some armed units but these are the rare exception to the rule), they are now trained in a number of unarmed-combat styles. From 4050, they will also be armed with Lightsabers (a non-lethal, extendable baton that reacts with the air to produce the glow and hum associated with 'real' lightsabers)

Following changes in the law and due to the increase in violent crimes, a correctional facility is in operation in orbit around Titan. The prisoners are two-tiered. The general inmate population are working towards their own rehabilitation and can expect release within two years. Those in B-Wing are newer inmates, awaiting their allocation to either Gheel, or to the new Gehenna Station. Gheel also serves as one of the Applied Technologies Division's key research facilities.

Inmates sent to the new Gehenna Station are longer-term rehabilitation projects, of which there is no guarantee of success (but still we try)

Gheel Correctional Facility & Research Centre.
Current ATD compliment: 6,450
Current PCF compliment: 600
Gheel inmate population: 2,500
Total Population: 9,550 (as of 4140)
(Capacity 10,000)

Gehenna:
Current inmate population: HFPE
Current PCF compliment: HFPE
Current ATD compliment: HFPE
Total Population: HFPE
Capacity: HFPE

Research & Development Projects:

Project name: 'Tree of Life'
Status: Active (Ongoing)

Other: A joint research project with Sybus.

Description:
An ongoing study into the Founding Tree, situated in Tigris Planus, the seed of which was sourced from the Sybus Corporation.

The Tree was planted in 3999 and the project has been ongoing since that time. The duration of the project is over the course of the Tree's lifespan ( c1000 years) and aims to study the tree's growth and development in order to gain a better understanding of it. A second seed is in protective storage.

The area surrounding the tree is currently used for agricultural crops and the tree has doubled productivity of this soil by another 100% over a 200 mile radius. Study of the surrounding soils are underway.

Project update - 4400.

The founding Tree now lies at the centre of a plush jungle - as unintended side effect of our previous policy of soil rotation, expanding the tree's influence and as such, the environmental effects of it entering maturity - that is threatening to push out agricultural homesteads.

Meanwhile, new and exotic species are being discovered and catalogued.

Estimated completion date - sometimes after 5000AD

Project name: ‘Plenty
Status: Active

Description:
Food cloning technology project - based on the technology acquired from Pallas - will look to enhance productivity and profitability of this vital tech by up to 25%

All research developments on this project will be shared with the Republic of Pallas.

Estimated completion date - (completed 4015).

Project name: ‘Comfort Blanket
Status: Active

Description:
Based on the public domain technology of Medical Administration Cloth, we are looking at ways to develop it’s capabilities and range of uses, over 2 phases.

Phase 1 - Guardian Angel

Description:
Developments will include regulation of body temperature, increased durability to weather conditions (without restricting movement of the material) and the ability to hold a solid form - these additional functions would also enable a temporary heated shelter to be constructed from a large enough piece, or pieces, of this cloth, such as field hospitals. After use, the Material would then re-set itself back to it's default state, ready for it's next application.

Alongside general enhancements to existing MAC capabilities we aim to improve effectiveness of this tech by up to 30%.

We will also look to integrate the more basic medical functions of this technology into all standardised clothing materials currently used by the general populace

All developments made in phase 1 will be shared on request.

Phase 2 - Arch-Angel

Description:
Further enhancements of developments (Semi-HFPE: for standardised issue of MAC-clothing among all PCF and Volunteer Police forces) will aim to further increase the effectiveness of the technology by around another 25% (Details to be announced at close of Phase 1)

Further developments are likely to continue

All developments made in phase 2 will be shared with the Republic of Pallas on request.

Estimated completion date - completed

HFPE PROJECTS:

Project name: ‘Fireworks
Status: Active (Ongoing)

Description:
A Comprehensive Defensive Strategy, designed to reduce any attack to ‘fireworks' - a safe spectacle that can be viewed from a distance and negate the need for ground forces.

Side-project A: ‘Gloves’ (HFPE)
Status: Active

Description:
Based on the Fireteeth planetary missile defence system acquired from the Republic of Pallas, this project will focus on adapting the technology to favour the non-lethal incapacitation of enemy combatant vehicles and their occupants.

All developments will be shared with the Republic of Pallas on request.

Estimated completion date - complete, with further developments ongoing.

Side-project B: ‘Mind Meld
Status: Active
Other: Joint Project with the Republic of Pallas

Description:
This project aims to further develop the Sentinel Mind and Curator Mind technologies and will also incorporate the ongoing research into the new, fully sentient antivirus technology, Tranquility, by the Republic of Pallas.

The aim is to successfully integrate all three systems into a single, fully-comprehensive, Anti-Viral Cyber Defence System that is far more powerful, fully sentient and able to constantly redesign, update and repair it’s own operating systems.

Estimated completion date - complete

Side-project C: ‘Hide and Seek’ (HFPE)
Status: Active

Description:
Based on Pallasian HFPE Cloaking tech, we are looking to improve upon the effective capabilities of this tech by a further 30%, which would be used to conceal all defensive capabilities from would-be aggressors as well as our own pacifistic people.

All developments will be shared with the Republic of Pallas.

Estimated completion date - 20 years (Nov 2nd)

Project name: 'Omega'
Status: Active.

Other: Omega is the last line of defence - A defensive weapon we hope never needs to be used.
Description:
Omega projects (or 'Phases') are the most closely guarded secrets of the PCG. Each has a cover project associated with it - the knowledge of Omega projects does not even extend to the President, beyond that of the cover project.

Phase One: ‘Bounce’.
Description (cover-project):
A long term shielding program in which we aim to develop larger deflector shield capabilities for our regions/cities that will look to vastly increase the defensive strength and overall capabilities of our shields. We would then aim to implement a dual shield system with these advancements.

The first shield will look to absorb the full impact of a full assault.

The second shield is in place should the first fail and would be stronger than the first shield, but will use the energy absorbed from the first shield during it’s attack to boost it’s own defensive capabilities, more than doubling the strength of the second shield.

This would require any attacking fleet to come at us with an arsenal that would have to get through the first shield at its standard operating strength, and then through the second (at an increased strength to the first shield) - which has absorbed the energy used in taking down the first shield and fed that extra energy back into it’s own.

An attacking fleet would potentially have to come at us with more than 3x the firepower that they would against a standard shield.

Actual Description:
As above, but should the first shield be about to fail, the second shield would become weaponised, using the destructive force of the aggressor against them (hence, ‘bounce’). If attack persists and the first shield does fail, targeting systems adapted from Fireteeth defence systems would target the source of the attack.

Whereas the first shield would deflect blasts away, the second shield - having absorbed the extra energy the enemy has expended on breaking the first shield - would then target the point of origin of the attack and would release a blast equivalent to the total energy absorbed, directly back at the enemy.

If the attacker is not already destroyed by the blast (that would be roughly equal to the arsenal he has already expended on us) they still have another shield to break through, operating at 100% efficiency, which in itself would still be more powerful then the first shield.

If ever the first shield is breached and the second shield does return fire - the PCG will deny that any weaponisation was an intended development and rather an unforeseen side-effect of the system (or a ‘lucky shot’). Though after first use, the destructive capabilities will be known and should provide enough of a deterrent against future aggressors.

Estimated completion date - weaponisation complete. research ongoing - 400+ years in.

Project name: 'Karma'
Status: Active

Description:
This project will see the development of chemical weapons (non lethal) for use by the PCF. We intend to focus on chemical agents that can be used to render opposition combatants either completely unconscious or suffering a temporary physical paralysis, thus facilitating their capture while also reducing the number of combat fatalities.

Estimated completion date - Oct 29th, research scheduled to continue indefinitely

Further updates will be posted here.

'The Galactic Voice'

Postby jonisilk » 06 Sep 2014, 01:55

Below is a selection of culturally relevant articles from the more recent archives of the Popular Independent Martian Journal, The Galactic Voice :

--------------------------------

Azimov - Historian or Teller? - Article reprinted as first published in the Martian Journal, 'The Galactic Voice' (3999)

Exciting developments have been reported at the Martian Great Library.

In the corrupted archives of the Great Library, several volumes have been found which are believed to be the work of acclaimed space historian, Isaac Azimov, though not all are convinced of their historicity.

A number of Martian intellectuals now claim that the works of Azimov are not to be taken as historical fact and instead suggest that the man we commonly think of as an Historian, was in fact a Teller.

Since the arrival of the PCG, having been thrust into a far bigger world than that of many previous generations, it has come as a bit of a culture shock to some of the populace. As educational establishments have begun to teach the history of the solar system as the rest of the humanity knows it, certain chapters of our own Martian history have been questioned.

While we have always maintained an element of historicity to our oral tradition, we have long acknowledged that our stories are largely understood as allegory, designed to impart moral and ethical life-lessons to future generations.

As such, we have often taken the work of the ancients to be more inclined toward historical accuracy and the revelation that this is not the case, as well the inevitable conclusion to be drawn - that the art of the Teller is not unique to us - has been met with resistance by many.

However, many scholars are at pains to point out that this discovery should do nothing to diminish the significance of a rich and wonderful body of works that is one of the pillars of our Martian culture and a source of great pride to many.

25 Minutes That Changed My Life (Or, How I learnt to stop worrying and love Mars) - Article reprinted as first published 'The Galactic Voice’. (4001)

As the Phoenix Corporate Group has emerged over the last few years, it has brought the attentions of many to Mars and the often overlooked culture of this most hardy and yet creative of people who remain strongly passionate about their heritage, and living these past two years as an alien among them, I can certainly attest to both the richness of it and the passion with which it is held.

One such heritage, and one probably most deeply revered, is that of the Martian art of the Teller.

The Tellers were people of words and letters in a time when many were illiterate. They were a highly valued member of the community, as it was through the Teller that the oral histories were recorded and handed down.

Over many generations, the teller refined his craft creating new stories that would direct the people toward an inner reflection, with allegorical stories woven into the past successes and failures of the people going back to the first days of Mars many centuries ago.

Recent discoveries would suggest that the ancient libraries of the first men on Mars were mistakenly categorised when first re-discovered (over half of all files still remain undeciphered to this day, due to the corruption of the primitive storage system). The Martian people had long assumed that the art of creating stories was unique to themselves, and as such, when the works of the library were translated, they were interpreted as historical records.

The works of Isaac Azimov, spoke of worlds they knew from their own oral traditions and so were assumed as the very literal history of the people and their emergence on this planet, believing them to be historically accurate. The revelations that Asimov might not be the Historian they thought him to be, has forced a radical rethink on the question of the Martians own history.

Despite this, the modern Teller is no less prized for his mastery of the craft. They are not mere writers and artists and spinners of fanciful yarns. A true Teller is a master of multiple forms of artistic expression, but most impressive is the ability of the Martian Teller to weave an individual story around a particular person, within moments of meeting them.

I met June Unerka at a diplomatic function in Selinopolis last month during the flying season (some terrific winds bring out some of the most skilled and daring of local free-gliders). He was a short unassuming man with a funny shuffle to his walk, but within three minutes of having met me (that’s three Martian minutes, so about 258 ‘real’ seconds) he fixed his gaze upon me and started to speak and before I knew it, this odd little man had swept me into a 25-minute tale that captivated my attention from start to finish, ending (as they always do) on a question, before simply shuffling away and leaving me to ponder…

Some off-worlders have described the experience as similar to having a telepathic link, with details and events within the story seemingly pulled directly from the personal memories of the listener, reaching it’s conclusion once an option is presented to the listener, and here the experience ends and the Teller goes on his way.

Except that’s not where the experience ends, because the manner of the story told and the choice the character was presented with at the end of my very own (very) personal story, didn’t just happen to a character in a story. It happened to me.

On that day, I was faced with a big decision I had been putting off for a while. Not only had this man intuitively identified that I was wrestling with a problem, but he told me a story about ‘myself’ which led me to answer a question that had troubled me for months.

The choice at the end of the story was clear, and it was only a short step from that to recognition of the fact that the choice I faced in real life was equally as clear. It felt like a weight had been lifted from me, and ultimately, that is the reason that a great Teller is so revered. The stories they tell are instructional tools, crafted for the individual to address his or her needs.

Master tellers can take you away on an escapist flight of fancy with magnificent, moving stories that capture the heart and mind, sparking the imagination and distilling the clarity of the listeners thought processes down to the point where, when the question is eventually asked, you already know the answer, even if you didn’t know you had a question when you began.

A Different Perspective - Article reprinted as first published in the Martian publication, 'The Galactic Voice’. (4002)

A Teller is a highly valued member of the Martian society. He or she is an accomplished artist, a weaver of tales and bringer of insight and now it would seem, also an ambassador.

The unexpected decision of the governing body to employ Master Teller, June Unurka as the PCG’s olive branch to the Communist Republic of New Japan, was explained by original founding member and former Director of the governing body, Turin Ellison.

“The Teller has been, is now and always shall be, an important part of our heritage whom we prize for their ability to see what lies within and to bring out the very best in us as a people”, said the former Director, speaking at a public engagement. “Who better then to speak for us, than those who know us best?”

The move has generally been well received by the population - fellow tellers especially - with many seeing their innate ability to identify and clarify an individuals concerns and address them in narrative form, as a powerful tool that suits them well to the art of diplomacy.

Another encouraging development for tellers has been the increase in interest from off-worlders seeking consultations. Many of these off-worlders have claimed the experience is akin to the ultimate in self-help therapy. They often speak of an euphoric state followed by a clarity of mind and a positive outlook that lasts for days, sometimes weeks afterwards and invariably leads to them making a positive life change - sometimes major, sometimes minor - within a three month period.

Dividends: A Cultural Celebration - Article reprinted as first published in the Martian journal, The Galactic Voice. (4003)

The Winter Dividends is fast approaching and shaping up to be one of the biggest the people have seen since the day was renamed to commemorate the founding of the corporation on that very same day. But what is Dividends - besides a founding holiday - and what is it’s significance to the people and the planet of Mars?

Following the wider unification of the regions Frasta, Tigris Planus and the Tar Kehv Valley - which a few years later would be re-named, Langale Province, in honour of the man who had led the unification - the celebrations were renamed and held every 12 Martian months, in line with the standard off-world calendar the corporation uses for trade - It is according to this standard calendar that the corporation is celebrating their 45th year as a independent entity.

Prior to this, Dividends had been known as the New Year Festival, held every two years during the mid-point of the Martian Summer, in celebration at the passing of another year of Martian life. It was a time for the mourning of those that had passed, but also a time of celebration and new life - the Martian Summer being the year during which populations traditionally grew, before the winter cull of numbers began.

Those winter culls are now an increasingly distant memory and the Winter Dividends are becoming almost as big an event as the more traditional Summer celebrations. Birth rates have even increased during these winter periods, but for the most part, the people are still culturally conditioned to a mating cycle that favours a summer birth.

So what does Dividends entail, you may ask?

Besides the Annual Opera held in the Olympus Arena - a venue where every Martian artist aspires to performing - there are myriad of wonderful markets and stalls that line the streets of the Selinopolis, where artists, merchants and craftsmen all proudly display their skills and works in public.

Watching these artists at work, one can see the joy that springs from their creative expression and to be seen and appreciated for these skills is a source of great pride for them, with those who would watch, often rewarded with gifts of appreciation from those they enjoy watching and admiring as they display their talents.

Traditionally, this is both an act of charity and of trade, with such displays intended to bring custom and trade for the coming year, from those who they would hope to leave an impression upon.

Strong Martian winds and impressive mountain ranges have also combined to provide one of the more daring sports in Martian culture. Gliders can regularly be seen taking-off from the peaks in their customised body suits that turn them into soaring-daredevils, skirting through canyons and around rock and ice formations at incredible speeds.

It is a sport that relies as heavily on nerves of steel as it does on the physical strength to successfully execute manoeuvres at high-speed, especially when the ever-changing nature of ice formations suddenly presents the glider with a potentially fatal spit-second decision to make.

The growing interest in this sport from off-worlders has led to a number of courses having been designed for different levels of ability, should you want to try out this exciting pastime yourself, but the very best of gliders have spent years perfecting their skills and we do not recommend you attempt to recreate some of the manoeuvres you may see.

The taming of the wild boar is also a popular event, though a tense and unnerving experience for those watching, with would-be tamers carefully approaching the large beast whom they must saddle and mount without causing the animal distress, the result of which could prove to be fatal for the tamer in question. In times past, this was considered an act of great courage and modern tamers are still revered today as celebrities among the Martian people.

As the Martian people once more celebrate the passing of another standard year, so they would invite all other people to share in the celebrations with them, as they welcome the increasing number of off-worlders who have made Mars not only the new holiday destination of choice - following a sharp rise in the number of tourists - but also the growing number that would now call it their home.

In Memoriam - Darius Langale: The Man Who Could - article reprinted as first published in the Martian Journal, ‘The Galactic Voice’ (4010)

It is with great sadness that we announce that First President Darius Langale, has died. He passed away peacefully under the stars, on the night of the annual meteor shower, at 80 years of age.

Darius Langale was born in what is now the city of Nidum, or Nidum town as it was called then. He grew up along the Valley of the Shining River, in the former Tahr Kev Valley. The son of an industrialist he showed a propensity for poetry and public speaking. In his teens, he rebelled briefly against his privileged upbringing and sought to be independent of his father, who would hope to see him one day take over the family business.

A compromise was found whereby he would be put to work as an off-world sales agent for his fathers expanding company and seeing the opportunity to leave Mars, a young Darius had jumped at the chance. He became a skilled negotiator and a successful sales agent, bringing a number of big contracts during this time.

He would later recall that it was this time on other worlds that did most to shape his appreciation for the people of his own planet, whom he admitted to having thought simple and stubborn in his youth - a charge that has been levelled at Martians before.

He would also meet Ella, his future partner, at this time (though if the stories told are true, then their first meeting was anything but love at first sight). They soon became inseparable and when news reached Darius of his father’s death, she returned with him to Mars. He would later confess that one of his biggest regrets was not making his peace with his father before his death.

The next two years would see him first take up the reigns of his fathers company, then begin a one man crusade to better the lot of his workers and the wider community. Finding kindred spirits in Marcus Sohl, Deyan Shelby and Turin Ellison among others, they fought local governments to gain their autonomy and merged the eight major industrial companies together to form the Phoenix Corporate Group.

It was Darius who saw that the future of Mars and it’s people lay not on the planet, but in the off-world industry of asteroid mining, directing a large amount of resources into long-term projects that would never have been possible under the archaic local governments of the past and as profits grew, so they were shared with the wider community at Dividends and through sizeable investments in education and healthcare, the likes of which many had not seen before.

Many were still too used to being taken advantage of and were initially resistant to the PCG’s overtures, but Darius continued working tirelessly to bring the people together until finally the regions of Frasta, Tigris Planus and Darius own home region, the Tahr Kev Valley, all joined together to form the first lands of the PCG in 3978.

20 years after first founding the PCG, Darius Langale was honoured for his achievement in bringing the regions together, with his appointment by the governing body as the First President of the PCG.

In the years that followed, he gained wider recognition from the people themselves, when they took it upon themselves to change the name of the Tahr Kev Valley - the region of his birth - to Langale Province, in 3985.

It was shortly after this however, that his beloved Ella passed away and it is widely known that the loss hit him hard. Over the years that followed, he threw himself into his presidency and made several key decisions which at the time threatened to destabilise the still newly unified regions.

Restrictions were made on oceanic sourcing, placing more strain on agricultural crops, in order to prevent over sourcing of marine life. What is known now - but could not have been known at the time - is that these restriction were unnecessarily harsh, but had been considered a necessity on environmental grounds which the people had accepted when the bill was initially passed.

With this in mind, the people of Elostil were approached with the intention of bringing them into the PCG as a fourth region, due to the large tracts of farmable land to be found there. Again, the local populace were resistant and Darius again set about the task of charming the people to bring them into the fold.

These tensions between particular regions continued on for the best part of a decade. They were only effectively resolved when the PCG was recognised as a new power by the nations of our sister worlds in the fall of 3998, which enabled them to secure the financial clout to tackle these problems through the ACFR fund.

Almost as soon as the PCG had arrived on the international stage, Darius had agreed to host the historic peace talks of 3999 - historic because no-one had thought peace actually possible, but once again, Darius had delivered the impossible with the Treaty of Berrynopolis, and though tensions between Earth and Venus have increased in recent years the treaty is still observed by both sides, with no major military action undertaken by either party.

Following this, Darius returned to the task of bringing Elostil into the PCG and in 4002, shortly before The Great Man was about to step down from office, the people of the region agreed to work with the PCG and open up their lands to agricultural use by the corporation (though they still remain an independent region and do not yet fully recognise themselves as a part of the PCG). Expected to retire at the end of his third term, Darius instead stayed on for another eight-year term, though he would serve only six of them.

In 4003 he suffered a terrible personal tragedy - that some believe he may never have fully recovered from - when a shuttle containing both his children and their young families, crashed through the roof of a house killing 9 people in all. The only survivor of the accident was his daughter, Jenna.

The event saw an unparalleled outpouring of grief among the people of Mars, who each felt the pain of president on a personal level. Over the following year, he would retreat from public view while he assisted Jenna in her rehabilitation and when he did appear in public after that, his daughter would forever be at his side.

In 4007, the President was further honoured by the people of Venus, when both Langale University and the Darius Scout Reservation were named in recognition of his achievements and his continued commitment to the ideals of peace and plenty for all.

In the last few years, Darius had become less active in his presidency, until in 4008, after 50 years or service to the people and the planet of Mars, he announced his retirement as president and saw his daughter, Jenna Langale, sworn in as the new president on the same day.

He is survived by his daughter, the Second President of the PCG, Jenna Langale, and will be remembered in the hearts and minds of the people, who love him, as he loved them.

Mars Shocked by First Murder in a Century! - article reprinted as first published in the Martian journal, 'The Galactic Voice' (4013).

It’s a troubling time for Mars and the PCG. For the first time in more than a century, the unspeakable act has been committed and fingers are pointing at the corporation and their lack of foresight in providing adequate checks on those who would migrate here.

The family of the victim are known to have been contacted personally, by President Jenna Langale, to offer them the most heartfelt sympathies of the PCG and people of Mars and the assurance that those who committed this terrible act will be found and brought to justice.

The victim was himself a foreigner - one of the small wave recently arrived from New Baun - who had emigrated to the PCG and was looking to earn his citizenship through the Darius Initiative as a Medic. His body was found in an alleyway - not far from his home, in the commercial district of Selinopolis - and showed signs of violent struggle. The death was caused by a blow to the head with a blunt object, though several stab wounds were also inflicted.

Local feeling is that the crime could not have been committed by native Martian, as person on person violent crime has long been absent from our culture, with the last murder committed over 105 years ago.

The penalty for such an offence was banishment - effectively a death sentence on our once unforgiving planet and one of the reasons that people did not traditionally travel alone outside of their region, lest they be mistaken for an exile.

Though this has proved an adequate enough deterrent for the last century, many have instead called for the deportation of the offender when he is caught, but there are a vocal minority that have called for the harsher, more traditional punishment - though it is by no means certain that current conditions make survival more than possible.

Managing Director, Ethan Sohl has been quick to point out no-guilt has been established and it is still conceivable - however unlikely - that the crime could have been committed by one of our own, calling for people to remain calm as the Corporate Forces assist the Volunteer Police in tracking down those responsible for this horrific crime.

While the people strive for self-sufficiency, the preservation of the planets eco-system is of paramount importance and we seek to take from it only that which we need (plus 10% for reserves) but additional reserves would be most welcome.

Tinned meat would provide a valuable non-perishable reserve that would certainly compliment the nations diet, but we welcome all offers, so long as they are responsibly sourced.

How would payment be preferred? In cash, or an equivalent value of mined minerals in their raw states?

If your preference is for the later, then we have recently begun work on harvesting a decent sized carbonaceous asteroid that has strayed too far from the asteroid belt and lays within our reach. We have estimated that with our current level of technology, we would would require 6 years to fully mine this asteroid of valuable materials.

We expect to extract a sizeable quantity of metals from this asteroid in the next 2 years (approx 500m tonnes of both nickel and iron and a further 150m tonnes of both platinum and gold respectively). Other volatile chemical compounds, such as hydrogen, oxygen, sulphur and nitrogen, will be mined and made available for trade in a number of states (liquid, solid, gas) as required.

On the matter of defence, we believe that our current military strength is adequate and sustainable and will not be looking to make large adjustments upwards of this level until our population exceeds the 100 million mark (which we would estimate at some time in the next 40-50 years), as we would prefer to focus investment in our own educational and research programmes during this period.

We will be looking to upgrade the defences of our cities and our orbiting business interests at a rate that reflects our growth, so once I have had an opportunity to fully peruse your catalogues I will be getting back to you.

Between now and then, our primary aim is to improve upon our mining and refining operations, and as such we welcome any research and technology that advances our capacity in this regard.

We have the best food in the world. Give us your mining, spacecraft, and defense technology as you research it and we will provide as much food as you need. It will keep your people from ever revolting, trust me. It's amazing.
