The Bid distribution is another indication of the apparent balance of this game - there were only 2 cases where those bidding the maximum 240 points had 2 bids, requiring a tie breaker (high random number between 1-100 won the toss) - Knights and Centaurs.

Everyone got near a top pick, except perhaps Hobbits, although with no preference given the sequence of the selections was randomized.

There were some interesting schemes described to me about how various people calculated their bids (and these are just those who explained their actions):

  • 2 players selected no preference
  • 1 analyzed the statistics of games played (vanilla rules - no fog) and weighted each race for solos (15pts), draw wins (5pts), and survives (1pt) to create a weighted average for each race
  • 1 analyzed the locations and assigned points for consolidation of home turf, proximity to neutral centers, closeness to neighbors, watchtowers, and a sliding scale for powers (prizing "Intel" most highly, followed by "movement" and "attack" enhancements, and least value to "build" and "supply" strengths)
  • 1 chose a sequence based on the alphabetical order of the races

1 chose based on the color of his favorite NHL team followed closely by his wife's maiden name (teal and Knight for those still confused).

Ahem.

Clearly this game is off to a good start for me, given that I'm the only player to get a 1-point choice. C'est la guerre, I guess.

Elves aren't bad, c'mon.

This is where bid strategies can be developed - all your eggs in 1 basket, or spread the wealth...

You said someone had analysised old games (non FoW), is there an record where you can find them, just found the one that was played a few years on the forum not long ago.

The creator of Haven runs the games on the diplomaticcorp site (where he is one of the moderators):

There are detailed stats on each game at this site too.

Dig around a little there, you'll find them.

I know you can't post maps, but can you post deadlines for turns somewhere on this forum? Now I have to search through 15 pages of messages every time I try to find out when the moves are due.

Thanks!

Suggestion: Make a 'current season and deadline' thread, where only you post. At the top of the first post you can put the current deadline, so everybody can always easily see it, and you just post an update in the thread whenever you process moves.

That seems like a great idea. I have also been looking here on the Forum to remind myself when the next deadline falls due...
