Too many neutrals?

Postby Shibabalo » 12 Dec 2012, 00:22

The one thing I dislike about Ancient Med is the sheer number of neutral supply centers it has: 19.

19 neutrals, for just 15 HOME SUPPLY CENTERS.

According to Math, roughly one third of the map should be neutrals. In Ancient Med, over half of the supply centers are neutrals.

Now, I believe that this is part of the reason Ancient Med is so popular; people get more neutral supply centers. Everyone loves playing a game where you'll get three neutrals in the first year! But for me, this ruins a lot of the early-game tension.

Now, I'm guessing I'm missing something, as I don't actually have that much experience with the variant, and others do. I'm just curious what it is I'm missing.

And I know this isn't really strategy, but I wasn't sure where else to post this.

Just play a few games Shibabalo. Totally different dynamic from Regular. I believe super_dipsy was a bit dooubtful when we presented him with Ancient Med as the first completely different variant for the site. I played the first game on main site with him, and he was convinced immediately.

I LOVE IT.

Partly because I suck less at it than I do at regular (yes, it's connected to more neutrals), partly because it's FUN to have 3 builds.

I don't see any downside.

Although everyone can get three neutrals, I have found (in the few games I am playing) that often not everyone does. For example, Rome and Carthage can bounce in Sardinia. It creates a different form of tension, where everyone wants to negotiate a way to their three builds, while saving as many centers as possible for the next year.

Lol, my record on Ancient Med has been abysmal. I have yet to survive a game, let alone draw or win.

I have played just two games on Ancient Med and both I have soloed. I don't know why. First I was Persia, the second I was Rome. I don't can barely get myself beyond a four-way draw on the regular map. So, I don't know if it has to do with the additional builds which are easy for everyone, the type of people drawn to ancient med or what, but I find it much easier.
