I can understand the hesitation, but these variants tend to run a little shorter than classic Diplomacy. A major factor is that they don't require control of a map's absolute majority in order to win.

For some perspective:
  • Ambition & Empire really does last less time, partly due to its 15 SC endpoint. I need to dig up the data, but I think it landed in the 6-8 range fairly frequently.
  • 1812 Overture has a median of 7 years, with a maximum of 9 years.
  • 1900 has a median of 9 years (per this site's data on full-press games).
  • 1936 has never gone past 8 years.
  • Dissolution is more of an unknown, but its length will need to vary based on the time remaining in the year, so the point is moot.

I will have a look at the schedule and see if I can stretch the middle games out to 9 years each instead of 8. The first round will remain at 7 years, however, and the last round will be between 6-8 years depending on how everything else goes.

I've updated the original post. The three middle games can now run up to 9 game-years each. Ambition & Empire will remain at 7 years, however, and Dissolution's length will be between 6-8 years depending on time remaining in the year when 1936 finishes up.

Oh, and also a fancy new logo:

Love the new logo!

CYOC will have a Dynasty of some kind judging by interest in the subforum. Members are undetermined but it will exist

Excellent! CyĆ³c even looks like a vaguely dynastic name.

If you have lots of interest, remind folks that they don't all have to be in the same Dynasty. 2-4 is the target size.

Does Ambition usually end is 7 years?

Also, you can always start early in the middle if the games are finished early.

Are the dynasties required to use this forum for communicating with each other via PM or if we find a more convenient way that everyone is okay with will we be allow to use that?

So if you read the original post, I'm going to have a Slack team set up so that everyone involved in the tournament has much easier communication with one another. You'll have the ability to talk privately with your fellow Dynasty members as well as with your opponents.

The last couple games have ended at 7 years. I'll need to get the full statistics from Baron, but it does tend to be a bit shorter than other variants.

I am planning to start games a little earlier if prior games finish earlier than expected, but there's still a lot of potential for a time squeeze (especially with the 9-year limits now on the middle games). You can see the planned schedule if you're interested.

And that schedule doesn't even take into account that I'll probably need to extend deadlines a couple times for things like moving, vacations, and big holidays. One thing to keep in mind is that the end-of-game time is meant to add a little stress into the mix (for the players) while taking some of the stress off of the GM.

I am keen to organise a dynasty.

May I also suggest that some variants be added to spice it up a bit. 1900 being a relatively vanilla format could be enhanced by making it Fog of War and/or changing the start conditions to escalation or AoE. 1812 might also work well with FOW.
