Hi everyone

I'm a 21-year old student at the University of Virginia, so I figured I'd join the Students group

I take it this is a diplomacy tournament? Haha, there's basically no information on the site as to what this is actually about.

That is hilarious. I didn't notice. Of course, I suppose those in the traveling circle know.

Yes, it is a Diplomacy tournament, three rounds. Former WDC Champion Chris Martin is supposed to be there. A finalist on the top board at this year's WDC, David Maletsky, will be there. Plus, many other top players.

Sounds neat. So how does the tournament work? Is three rounds three games per player? Is each game played to conclusion or some kind of turn/time limit?

Thanks for posting, I may well attend.

I have been there a few times, but directors change.

Typically, the rounds are untimed. But, contact the director Peter (email on website).

Yes, each player will have an opportunity to play three games. They always have a few locals around open to play, but not needing to play, to ensure all boards are full.

The games' scores are based on country size, when not solo. Tempest I think uses Sum of Squares or something similar.

They have best country awards in addition to placement awards and sometimes other special awards.

Welcome to the group! You've been officially added to our ranks now. Membership comes with free access to I Love Italy's opining on classical music, complementary string cheese (3 per member per year, dependent on members access to string cheese), access to students-group only games (none waiting to start at the moment, but I'm considering one starting in November--keep your eyes peeled if you're interested), and lastly, no strings attached side eye from the oldies group!

I've got my fingers crossed that you can get to D.C. for Tempest. I considered it since I'm passing by there twice, but the dates didn't quite work out. Face to face is a whole different animal, and a ton of fun! I highly recommend it for anyone that gets the chance to play.

I also recommend checking out the classicists group. It's a good group of players committed to seeing the game through and not missing moves. I think you can apply after one completed game, if memory serves.

If there's anything else you need or questions you have, whether student group related or otherwise, don't hesitate to PM me. Welcome to the group :)
