Generic Superhero Mafia (D2)

Postby Nanook » 02 May 2019, 05:54

Welcome to Generic Superhero Mafia!

Rules, for those who need a reminder:

Running this as Shadow's game is out of signups.

Knowledge of superheroes is by no means required, but familiarity with DC heroes (especially recent TV and movie adaptations) will probably make it funnier.

Generic Superheroes:

Fly Guy
Super strength—cannot be vigged normally.
X-ray vision—can see through walls. (equal to a watcher)
Weakness: special space metal bullet (removes super strength and x-ray vision).

Grim and Mysterious Figure
Sneaky AF—cannot be tracked at night.
Detective AF—can discern one of their targets abilities through use of incredible sleuthing abilities. (equal to a rolecop)
Weakness: mention their mother’s name and they turn into a weepy ball of sadness, making them unable to bring their intense intellect to bear (removes Detective AF, Sneaky AF remains in place).

Warrior Woman
Deflection reflection—can deflect any powers used on her back towards the player targeting her (50% chance they deflect and nothing happens, 50% chance they reflect and affect the player targeting WW) (example: rolecop that targets WW and is reflected, would receive knowledge of their own abilities back as a result). Does not apply to NKs, but DOES apply to vig shots.
Indomitable sense of right and wrong—cannot be scum at start of game (does not apply to time travel shenanigans).
Weakness: Loss of faith in humanity—occasionally despairs of the human condition, and removes herself from the world after seeing a horrific wrong perpetrated.

Speedy Comic Relief
Quick reflexes—you can use your super speed to save somebody from being shot at night, but you get so tired doing it that you know it’ll only work once—you have to get your beauty sleep sometime, after all! (equal to a one-shot doc)
Ill-advised time traveling—you’re so fast, you can turn back time and bring players back to life! But be warned, time traveling can have unintended consequences, like making former friends turn evil, or someone that was otherwise in perfect health having a sudden heart attack! (Example: on N2, turn time back to D1, reversing the D2 lynch, any N1 kills, and D1 lynch, bringing those players back to life).
Weakness: a complete lack of ability to judge character. If someone tells you they’re your friend you’ll believe them unquestioningly, and thus leave yourself open to their sudden but inevitable betrayal.

Trusty Sidekick
Morale support—you’re so supportive of your mentor, that you’ll trust them with your vote! On even numbered days, no matter who you cast your vote for, it will be counted as being cast for the same player your mentor voted for. If your mentor is dead, your vote will not count.
Pluck and determination—you’re just so goshdarn plucky and determined, the first time you’re lynched you won’t let it get you down, and you’ll survive to keep fighting!
Weakness: your weakness is, well, weakness! You’re not a full fledged superhero yet, so you don’t have their stamina. If a bad guy figures out who you are, they’ll snatch the breath right from your lungs and shank you in the pancreas!

Alien With Convenient Powers
Can’t touch this—you can “phase” yourself, making you impervious to a vig shot. Note that you can only use one of your abilities per night.
Shape shifting—you can shape shift to appear as one of the other heroes to anyone that may be peeking. You cannot shape shift and phase in the same night.
Weakness: fire. If you’re set on fire, you can’t phase, nor can you shape shift. Cause you're on fire.

Gritty TV Adaptation
Willing to kill—being on TV instead of in a movie means that you don’t share your big screens compunctions about taking life, and will stop at nothing to take down the bad guys, including very clearly shooting them in the heart after vowing not to kill anymore, but that’s OK because you only kill henchmen, never the named antagonists (I’m looking at you, Ollie). You can only do this once, then your deeply manipulative significant other will reprimand you and you’ll remember that you’re supposed to be setting an example for your son. (This role is equal to a one-shot vig)
Gradually increasing stakes—due to your being on TV, the stakes are constantly rising, and characters are constantly saying things like “this changes everything!” to really drive the point home. This has led you to be comfortable in do or die conditions, meaning that you count for two towards your teams VC (example: two scum and two town alive, with GTVA as one of the town, means that the game continues rather than ending in a scum victory).
Weakness: small budgets. Because sometimes the effects team runs out of money, your graphics aren’t quiiiiite what you see on the big screen. If somebody steals your funding, you won’t be able to use either of your abilities.

Twist:
The Magic McGuffin has turned two Generic Superheroes into Even More Generic Villains through vaguely handwaved away sorcery that will not be explained at a later date! These dastardly villains, in addition to knowing every players weakness, may (attempt to) kill one player per night. Scum will possess the powers of whatever hero they inhabit the form of. The scum may attempt to use the weakness of two players against them each night (but may only use a weakness twice per game)—if they use the correct weakness against the correct person, that person will be roleblocked. If they use the incorrect weakness, nothing will happen. A weakness lasts only on the night it is applied.

How the NK works:

Each night, the scum may attempt to NK somebody. If the person they’re attempting to NK has not been weakened, the kill will be unsuccessful. If the person has had the correct weakness applied to them, the kill will be successful. The weakness must have been applied to the player on the same night the NK is being attempted.

Game Map:
Start of D1
End of D1 (SJG dies, was scum)
Start of D2 (nobody dies at night)

Roster:
Sjg11 (Died D1, scum)

THE WIND BLOWS THROUGH THE CITY. With it comes the scent of despair and desperation. Or maybe that's just the smell of shadowface wafting down from Canada, who can really tell with those things. The HEROES wake, but something is off...two of them are...different. But which two? Nobody can tell, but everyone has an ominous feeling. [editor's note: there might be better flavor later in the game. Or there might not. You never know. This is what you get for now.]

D1 has begun! Everyone is alive, and the day will end at approximately Sunday, 7pm EDT.

So I *think* I'm all aboard team no reveals for any of our roles. Like, maaayyyybe there's a case to make for the Definitely Not Wonder Woman For Legal Reasons to claim right now, as it narrows our scum pool down by one, but I think the guaranteed N1 kill isn't worth the trade off. Our best advantage is that scum doesn't know how to kill us right away, I'd prefer to keep it that way for as long as possible.

Granted, we COULD have Not Wonder Woman For Legal Reasons out themself right now, with the hope that we don't kill Not The Flash For Legal Reasons tonight and then they time travel to undo the day, but that would require all of us, right now, to agree that we're playing more for the lulz instead of the most town positive play.

Also I feel this video should just be linked to the rules.

No reveals! Any reveal at this point in the game is a dead superhero D2.

Later in the game when scum have used some of their weakness attempts, maybe there could be a reason. But not right now.

More from me later when I'm awake.

Hello all,

I'm good with no revealing. We need to get rid of some scum first and then we can perhaps have a strategic reason to reveal. Not to reveal just for the fun of it.

Okay, a few things.

1) As I mentioned in signups, I'm competing this weekend, so I won't be around as much as I usually am. But, I'll be home in time for the deadline Sunday, so all should be fine. I just won't get as many real-time interactions D1 as I like to have, but it'll be ok.

2) Since I think there are a couple new names in the game, I take she/her pronouns.

3) Iamnobody: what's your mafia experience? Have you played anywhere else?

I've done Mafia for a long time on a different board. I have competed in the Mafia Championship that is currently being discussed. I know the game, but I may have some questions about certain terminology that is used here only. I am generally a quiet player who is not going to post paragraph after paragraph just to hear himself talk (type). In my opinion the more people talk the easier it is to accidentally reveal themselves.

If you don't mind sharing, what are you competing in this weekend?

Why would you be worried about accidentally revealing yourself if you're town??

I sing competitive women's barbershop, both in a chorus and in a quartet. This is area qualifiers weekend for internationals in November.
