Where to buy the Diplomacy board game in NYC

Postby AKFD » 08 May 2019, 11:43

Hello friends!

So I'm heading to NY this June, and I wanted to buy the Diplomacy game there! I'm from the Philippines and we don't have the board game here.

Do you guys know where to buy the game in NYC?

You have heard of e-commerce, yes?
Play every game of Diplomacy as if it will be the last game of Diplomacy you will ever play.

I do, but I doubt I can do that.

"Stop playing so much Diplomacy son, you'll go blind!"

Just tell them its your birthday present.

You have several options. One is to email a board game retail shop near where you'll be staying in New York (example Yelp listings).

They might not always keep Diplomacy in stock, but if you contact them with enough advance notice, they can order one and set it aside for you.

Another option: purchase it from Amazon.

Buying Diplomacy on Amazon with cash while abroad

  1. Find a Whole Foods near where you're staying that has Amazon lockers
    • An Amazon Locker is a series of locked storage bins that let people pick up packages without having them left at a doorstep or post office.
    • There are other stores that have these too like Duane Reed and Target.
    • Whole Foods just happens to be owned by Amazon.
  2. Buy an Amazon giftcard with cash.
    • LOTS of stores sell these: Whole Foods, Target, Duane Reed, local corner grocers, etc.
    • Make sure it's enough to cover the cost of the game.
    • Most Amazon shipping is free, but occasionally you'll have to pay a little extra. I'm not sure if there are fees associated with the locker.
    • About 35 USD should be fine.
  3. If you don't have an Amazon account already, work with your parents to set one up.
    • Set up your default shipping to use the Amazon locker.
    • It might require a credit card number just for verification.
    • Amazon doesn't typically care what country you're actually from when it comes to buying physical goods.
  4. Apply your giftcard to your account.
    • Order the Diplomacy boardgame.
      • Amazon lets you pick from multiple sellers, but the default is normally to buy directly from Amazon.
      • If the page doesn't say "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com", then look for a seller that has a big "prime" logo.
      • Allow for 2 days shipping, though Amazon often gets things delivered much faster than that.
    • Pick up your board game at the locker. You may need some form of identification.

Another possible option: are there any board game shops in your part of the Philippines? They may be able to order the game as part of the regular shipments of inventory they receive, even if they don't already have it in stock. You can have them order it for you, and then you can pick it up there.

If you're constricted to cash, it should be relatively easy to find a game or hobby shop near where you're staying and call (or email!) them in advance to ask if they carry Diplomacy. As Nopun said, even if they don't normally carry it, they may be able to order it for you and have it in by the date you'll be there. That's probably the easiest way if cash is your only option.

Another thing to keep in mind:

The latest official US printed edition of the game is kind of unimpressive. It's not entirely awful: the board is really pretty, the rulebook is well-constructed, and some of the supporting materials are pretty great.

However, the game pieces are pretty terrible. To keep the price point low, Hasbro is using printed cardboard chits rather than plastic figures or wooden blocks (as prior editions had used). They blend in with the map a bit too much, and it makes it very hard to visualize the game state as a whole.

I suggest looking at eBay instead and buying a copy of an older edition from a reliable seller.
    Example: https://www.ebay.ph/itm/Diplomacy-Board-Game-By-Avalon-Hill-Games-1981/223501851584

That may require your parents' assistance with payment, and you'll probably have to be patient shipping-wise, but if you can get the original wooden pieces it may be worth it.
