The good size of a Diplomacy board?

Postby Jack007 » 02 Jan 2019, 21:54

While making my dipboards I noticed the classic Diplomacy board edition 1999 by Avalon measures 50 x 50 cm only, which is together with the metal pieces quite small and crowded.

(This edition isn't for playing anyway, just for collecting.) ;)

So I ask you: how big is your dip board? How big should it be? What is the good size of a Diplomacy board?

Hey Jack,

I own the edition of the game with the nice metal pieces. I don’t really care for the board however as the colors are kind of off-putting and the board is kind of small. I haven’t been able to get seven serious players together yet anyway.

I also own Axis and Allies WWI: 1914 and the board is about 32 by 32 inches and it is a very comfortable playing size. Another game I have is Axis and Allies Global 1940 which is 32 by 72 inches which is far to large to play on an regular table.

32 by 32 inches is 81 x 81 cm which is quite big. The problem is indeed the table. People want to depose their drink and writing tools beside the board.

We'd need to know what size average tables are.

It is a large board. With games like axis and allies there are dozens of plastic pieces and we need the space. I imagine diplomacy is not in need of such a large board.

How big do you make your boards?

I made the Hundred board 50x50 cm (20x20"), which I think is appropriate for a 3 pers. game. The Ancient Med has 70x45 cm (28x18").

I'm thinking about a Classic at 70x60 cm (28x23"). Let's say a player needs about 20-30 cm (8-12") in front of the board. The table should then measure at least 110x110 cm (43x43").

Just measuring my kitchen table (unexpanded) 90x130 cm. The salon table is 90x90 cm. :(
