The 2019 Tournament of Swords (PbF)

Postby nanooktheeskimo » 08 Sep 2018, 14:36

The 2018 Tournament Through Time, run by the inimitable Alex Ronke/Nopunin10did, has been a massive success. Its followup will be a different, smaller scale affair, but will hopefully continue the fun and intrigue of the 2018 edition!

I'll be running this version, over the course of roughly eleven and a half months. The first round will start in the start of January, and the last round will wrap up around the middle of December.

Anticipated Adjudication Schedule
Expected Start Dates:
Round 1 Vikings Start Date: January 1st
Round 2 Baltic Start Date: April 11th
Round 3 Baltic Start Date: June 24th
Round 4 Medieval Start Date: September 9th

Variants to be Played
The games to be played are one round of Viking Diplomacy (an eight player game, played twice on this forum), two rounds of Baltic (a four player game, played eight times on this forum, and one game of Medieval (an eight player game, not played on our forum but viewable on dipwiki).

Round Structure and Scoring System
The round structure is simple: two concurrent games of Viking, followed by 2-3 games of Baltic, 1-3 more games of Baltic, and finally two concurrent games of Medieval. Everyone will play the Viking and Medieval teams, and at least one Baltic game. A Pair may choose to play both games of Baltic if they wish.

The scoring system is brilliant! Nopun kindly adapted his Fibonacci-Carnage system (a rank based scoring system) for 4 and 8 player games, and I'll be utilizing that. Both Viking and Medieval score. The best score from Baltic will count, with the worst score dropped from calculation--yes, this means that if you do poorly in Round 2, you'll have the chance to redeem yourself (or have your partner redeem you) in Round 3! There will be time limits for the games: 9 years for Round 1, 7 years apiece for Rounds 2 and 3, 9 years for Round 4.

Teams
Players may choose to go it alone, but this is a tournament designed to encourage playing with a partner. Two players may compete as part of a Pair, with the Pair scoring as one. In a Pair, only one player may compete per round (so if Jack and Jane are a Pair, only one can play in Round 1, only one can play in Round 2, etc.). If you want to play with a pair but don't have someone specific in mind, let me know and we'll find someone for you!

Communication
The 2018 TTT was run using Slack. This year's tournament will be run using Discord. There will be a central server where every player can congregate, and each individual game will have its own server, for the use of the players and any spectators. Communication must be done through Discord, and a guide for the basics of how to use it for communication will be available prior to the start of the tournament. Maps and orders will be posted on the forum, as well.

More information will be available soon! In the meantime, feel free to ask questions. Note that this is not the official signup thread, but that will also be available soon.

I hope you will be, my friend! A partner might be a good idea, so you can sort of tag team it if needed :)
