The PlayDiplomacy C-Diplo Series

Welcome to the PlayDiplomacy C-Diplo Series! This is a series of games of classic Diplomacy games that follow the C-Diplo scoring convention.

The games will be unranked from the PD site's standpoint, but scores will be recorded and maintained here on the forum. Games will be set up as Casual Classicists games, with the intent of attracting a mix of veteran players with proven reliability as well as relatively new players.

These games should end in DIAS after the Fall Retreats phase of 1907 (assuming no draw or solo is reached prior). There's no way to forcibly enforce this via the current online interface, but if you sign up for a game in this series, you are expected to honor this requirement. I have checked with WHSeward, and he has confirmed that this won't violate any of the existing rules regarding metagaming.

A typical 2/1/1 game should last no more than seven weeks.

C-Diplo Background
You can read more about C-Diplo and its popularity in French face-to-face tournaments in this article:
C-Diplo - Saint or Sinner? by Toby Harris

Rank-based scoring systems like C-Diplo and Carnage are popular in face-to-face games, but they're not widely present online. Unlike Draw-Sized Scoring, which is what is used under-the-covers for PlayDip's Elo system, there's much less incentive to eliminate players from the board in rank-based systems.

Additionally, rank-based systems are more easy to adapt to time constraints, whether real-time or measured in game-years. In the French F2F environment described in the above linked article, games are kept to a max of seven years, which is what we'll start with here.

About C-Diplo Scoring
This series will initially use the C-Diplo scoring system for all Classic games. Should we branch out to variants using something other than the Classic map, we will use similar rank-based systems to track points.

In a Solo
100 points go to the winner with 0 points for everyone else.

In a Draw
  • Each player gets 1 point for participation. (7 total)
  • Each player gets 1 point per SC controlled. (34 total)
  • Each player is ranked according to SC counts. For eliminated players, ranks are according to year of elimination (the later the better).
    • 1st place gets 38 points.
    • 2nd place gets 14 points.
    • 3rd place gets 7 points.
  • In the case of a tie, players split the points of all applicable ranks.
  • If a score doesn't divide evenly, I will round the result to the nearest hundredth of a point.

Please feel free to post any questions about the format. Let me know if you have interest in playing. This post will be updated as new games in this series are created.

Interesting! I read the article link which I recommend. Well written taking multiple perspectives.

It's fun to note that in the standard, winner takes all, scoring, many times, you can allow someone to be in the lead without fear of them soloing, so an early 6 center leader can swell to 11 or so before everyone steps up and puts him to it. This apparently encourages otherwise with an overwhelming focus on SC count as opposed to other considerations.

A related feature of finite-length games is that players not in the lead should theoretically feel safer to take risks when they think the leader won't achieve a solo before the time's up. The game is less reliant on stalemate lines, so breaking ranks doesn't necessarily guarantee loss.

PM me if you want in on one of these games.

I think this is an interesting idea, but I'd like it better if the game were allowed to go on further before declaring it over. Like say, to 1915.

That would kinda negate part of the point of it.

Agreed with Nanook. It would be a fun time to have purposefully short games. I say we keep 1907.

I’d love to see year-limits become an option on the site, for 7, 10, 15, etc Years. This series is intended as a proof-of-concept, so for now I’m trying to keep it simple.
