I only stated that IF there was preferences I wanted Carthage. Overall, I think random is much better as well.

While I don't hate the idea of random nations, I'd really rather do preferences... It's up to everyone else more or less, but I vote preferences.

I see two problems with preferences - firstly, when you're only playing the game once (probably) random is fairer. And if one country looks clearly weak it's going to be left to the end and there's likely to be real difficulty finding a taker.

Re. Preferences: I like randomly assigned.
That way after being the first one out of the game you can always blame the random selection handing you a bum deal. ;)
