That is an awesome video DQ. It makes so much sense. I over-rely on some steps to compensate for others.

Gunboat. Bleurgh...

It's like bad medicine. You know it tastes horrible but that ultimately it'll make you better. My tactics suck sometimes. Maybe I'll pluck up the courage to go lose a handful of gunboat games..... (shudders)

Keep the videos coming...... Love them :D

I agree with this entirely... someone should start a no rank gunboat game that we can join. It would be good to get some practice with tactics. I usually just rely on being convincing.

Now I've created some of this... bad medicine. Game "141148. Norank Gunboat"

FM, your awesome powers of persuasion have just made me sign up to gunboat. What have I done.

Next thing you'll persuade me to try those scary non-vanilla dip maps....

If any of y'all want to play with the crew we have over on Spark just let me know. We generally use Backstabbr for our gunboat games - habit, mostly, I worked on a Spark/Backstabbr integration a couple years ago - but Gunboat games launch about once a week or more, and I don't think we've had 4 NMRs in 2+ years of playing. Just drop me a PM and I'll get you an invite.

The game seems started already, so I have created a new one:

141173. Learning Tactics
12/12/12 no rank Gunboat

Let's do it.

Over on Spark, David Maletsky made this observation:

"To my mind, gunboat is for practicing mechanics, and as has been mentioned, helps with time management. I think a distinction needs to be drawn between “mechanics” and terms like “tactics” and “strategy”, though; tactics is mostly psychology after a point, and strategy is a combination of predictive capacity and apprehension of the butterfly effect on a given board."

And I was like .... dang, I wish I had talked to him before filming, because that's very true. If you don't have a mastery of the mechanics, you constantly trip over your feet when dealing with Tactics and Strategy.

Really, I don't know what you mean. I don't know what "mechanics" is, I don't agree with you definition of tactics, and neither with your description of strategy. If the terms are not clear, what is the sense of saying: improve your mechanics? That's like saying to a depressive man: improve your self-esteem. That's for nothing, even counterproductive. So please explain first your terminology, then tell me HOW to improve, on a practical base.
