If you add speed deadlines, that means everyone has to be Premium. Is everyone?

That reminds me, mine expires soon...better renew...

Tournaments are the preserve of premium members only, so everyone should be premium.
I wonder how many teams will now collapse because of this?

Just get this sorted :?: ,
the Games are supposed to be Classic, Public press, Gunboat and AoE FoW

If you say :
Code: Select all
Group A games - total of 4 will start on Nov 8, 2010
Group B games - total of 4 will start on Dec 8, 2010
Group C games - total of 4 will start on Jan 10, 2011
Group D games - total of 4 will start on Feb 7, 2011

which games are what kind of Game?

You said the first ones are classic, 4 games means 28 players we have 8 teams(=32 players).

When does the Team decide which players start
and which ones stay aside as specialists for a special variant?

Yes the original thought was to have a Classic, AoE FoW, Gunboat, and Public Press. However, polling some players and discussing with iShine (amongst others) pointed to not a lot of enthusiasm for non-Classic games.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't be interested in playing anything other than Classic as I have virtually no experience or none at all in playing AoE, FoW, Gunboat or Public Press. Other players echoed similar sentiment. Again speaking for myself, if the only slot available for me to play in was AoE, FoW, Gunboat or Public Press then I wouldn't play due to not having much experience in those games.

Thus the consensus was to make it Classic to level the playing field.

As for the game schedule each team has 2 players playing 4 games and 2 players playing 3 games for a total 14 games (2 * 4 + 2 * 3 = 14). Also, each team plays each country twice which is where the total of 14 games comes from (2 * 7 = 14). Finally, given there are 8 teams we need 16 overall games to ensure each team plays 14 games.

The thought behind a staggered start was to accomodate requests for not having players play multiple games simultaneously.

Once each team would play each country twice was mapped out - i.e. Italy twice, England twice, etc - the players were then randomly slotted into each place.

Now, if a team feels that Player A (who is playing 3 games) is better than Player B (who is playing 4 games) feel free to ask for the game load to be switched so that Player A now plays 4 games and Player B plays 3 games. Care was taken to ensure 2 playes from the same team wouldn't be pitted against each other in the same game - for obvious reasons.

Team Captains will be getting a list shortly of what the game assignments are. Pedros is coordinating the game assignments and can make any changes that are requested within reason. Asking him to completely revamp the mapping would be a bit much, but asking him to switch a game allotted to Player A and put in Player B is fine. As well as Player A is playing France in Game 5 and Player B is playing Italy in Game 7, please switch them so Player A is playing Italy in Game 7 and Player B is playing Italy in Game 5.

Hopefully Pedros doesn't get flooded with 87 requests to switch players around, but he will do his best to accomodate. The player assignments will equalize the balance - or at least that was the intent behind the mapping.

I wish you would have polled me. The hodgepodge of variants was one of the things that attracted me to the tournament in the first place, and I asked players to play for me based on their strength in some of those variants.

I don't think the word "consensus" means what you think it means. Or that the group whose opinions were canvassed was arbitrarily limited.

Glad to know we are moving staunchly ahead after having voiced my concerns with the organizers without resolution. I'm still in the process of ensuring all my players still want to or are able to play after a bait and switch. Guess there's little point in trying to negotiate in good faith if you've already made your decision. Sigh.

If there is a general consensus to have the "hodge-podge" of variants, that is fine ... the tournament format can be adjusted. Captains can poll their respective teams and post here. Democracy can rule if everyone is agreeable that that is fair.

According to iShine's original thread, there are supposed to be 4 variants, so of course it would be fairest to have that for the tournament. However, it would also only be fair if each team plays the same number of games of each variant (preferably 4 classic, 4 of another, 3 of another and 3 of another still). If that isn't possible with the current schedule, then I think we need to either go with all classic or have a compromise where half the games are classic and half the games are of a particular variant.
