3. Questions should only request rules be clarified and not request advice about how to resolve a situation.
4. When answering a question, members should restrict themselves to answering the question and not give advice on how to get around the situation.

It must be able to travel to that land, (so it must be adjacent and also capable of going on the space, ie fleet cant go to inland spaces and armies cant go to sea spaces)

so yes, it can retreat to any space beside it, except under these circumstances:

1) the attacking unit came from the territory in question
2) the targeted retreat territory had conflict in it last move. As in two or more countries tried to take the land but bounced.

I once retreated in the fall to a spot that gained me an sc. Which was totally legal. So you dont need to own the land or anything.

Is this helpful?
Diplomacy is to break someone's leg and then to say; "Lean on me."
