In addition to the general Forum Guidelines (see here: http://www.playdiplomacy.com/forum/view ... 30&t=15441), there are additional rules for posting in this forum.
1. Members should not refer directly to a specific situation in an active game. It is usually possible to provide an example of a similar situation elsewhere on the board.
2. It follows that links, images, game name and/or number should not be added to a post if the game is active.
3. Questions should only request rules be clarified and not request advice about how to resolve a situation.
4. When answering a question, members should restrict themselves to answering the question and not give advice on how to get around the situation.

nonasked for support?

Can one country support an attack from a second country without their knowledge? For example, Turkey owns Ankara, Con, and Smyrna and has armies in Ank and Con--in order to hold all 3, Turkey orders A Ank to Smy and A Con to Smy--knowing they will both stay where they are. But can Russia, if they have an army in Armenia, support Turkey's move from Ank to Smy? Without Turkey's knowledge? Thus forcing Turkey's army in Ank to Smy?

No. You cannot force an army to dislodge/bounce it's own nation's army.
But, you can support another nation's unit without their knowledge in hopes of forcing them moving into somewhere, as long as it is against a foreign nation's units and not their own.

If Turkey wants to stay there I'd have them support each other to hold... But that was probably just for an example.
mdmuff is right. I like to support units of countries that have surrendered and are just sitting there holding, to prevent a competitor from being able to conquer them. I'm sure its rather frustrating for them and it keeps the enemy from growing at a time that I don't have enough units in the area.

I've also supported a country that I wasn't allied with in an instance where they were being attacked by one of my enemies. The other country wasn't returning any of my messages, but I saw that he needed my support or would lose a vital territory. It helped tip the diplomatic balance in my favor and a neutral country became very friendly with me after that.

That IS a legal move. Unwanted support is a nice tactic too. They're not attacking a space occupied with a unit they control, so it goes through. IF they had a unit in Smy it wouldn't, but the purpose of the self standoff is to defend 3 spaces with 2 units.

ooh, yeah, I think you might be right. I didn't read carefully and assumed Turkey already had a unit sitting there. I know you can't dislodge your own unit, but bouncing? I'm not sure.

What if Russia had a unit in Smy? I know you can't dislodge your own unit, and I'm pretty sure you can't support a foreign unit to dislodge a unit you own - but I just wanted to check.

There would be a bounce, because as you said, you can't dislodge your own unit.
