Solo games still running?

Postby TheProfessional » 17 May 2015, 11:47

I've been away from the site for a couple of years. Do people still organise solo only games? Treat this thread as an expression of interest. :)

I believe that's an option, but only if you make it unranked.

No one has run a solo-only game in the old sense (handshake agreement) in quite some time. You'd have to breath some life back into that.

There is a new solo-only option where draws are not supported at all (!) which can be used for no rank games.

Having recently played in a "solo only" game I can tell you that, from my own perspective, it is a painful experience, and one I will never repeat. I played as Germany, and ended up being stuck between England and Turkey, neither of whom could achieve the solo without my help. I was not in a position to play one off against the other and achieve a solo myself, or to expand in any direction, so we were effectively stalemated for an interminable length of time. Eventually, England and I tired of the futility of it all, and turned over enough centers to Turkey to end the game.

As far as I'm concerned, requiring a solo only, and prohibiting draws, is a bad idea, as those who are not in a position to win outright have no incentive to help another player, and must either surrender or slog it out in a game that has lost its interest.

I'd be interested to hear how others feel about this option.

Personally, I agree, it is a broken variant. The only way to get through it is to plan on conceding the game to someone to make it end if you can't force a solo yourself.

The "handshake" agreement of the soloist games wouldnt have the same issue.

I'd join a solo victory only game.
Please let me know if you try and start one.
Cheers.
Did you know, that if the worst thing that happens to you is you lose some Supply Centers and get wiped from the board then you should consider it a damn good day.

If people were interested I would sign-up and help organise. I've made efforts to resurrect this sub-forum before and haven't succeeded though.

I would like to try a "handshake" variant as well.
