Proposed Constitution Change: Schools games

Postby WHSeward » 07 Aug 2014, 22:42

Currently the constitution reads in part:
Requirements for each tier are as follows, and need to be met on the basis of RANK and NORANK games (Friends games do not contribute towards the eligibility criteria)

It is silent about SCHOOLS class games because it was written 2 years before that class was introduced. I would propose that we amend the constitution to read "...on the basis of RANK, NORANK and SCHOOLS games..."

This change will primarily (only?) impact players that have been in mentor games. Players that have completed a mentor game are exactly the new players we should be recruiting for our Aspiring members. They have demonstrated a desire to learn the game and play well by choosing to be in a mentor game in the first place. They get indoctrinated to the idea of reliable play by the mentors.

Let's invite them in.

Agreed; let's get in early and instill Classicist values in new players wherever possible. Aspiring level already works well, opening it up to those who've made the effort to be formally mentored is logical captain.

I too, find this proposal reasonable, and think it should be enacted as soon as possible.

While I agree with the reasoning behind this I do want to point out why this probably cannot happen. Schools games (when they are set up by the teacher) use separate accounts created specifically for the schools game and are isolated from the main site. Students who later join the site do so by creating new accounts.

There is a other fundamental problem with this that is the same reason we do not count Friends games. The surrender stats only include Rank and Norank games. This means somebody could be an habitual surrenderer in Friends or Schools games, but still have apparently perfect surrender and NMR stats. This, plus the fact that Friends and Schools games operate under a different rules regime (they are not checked or investigated for cheating, and the metagaming rules are not applicable) is the reason why it is not appropriate to include them in the qualifying criteria for Classicist membership.

I think that these gentleman are referring more to mentor games. I think if a mentor can vouch for a player (they would have been able to see if there was an nmr or surrender) they could be allowed into the aspiring members.

Yes, MR is right and if necessary wording like this would work.

...on the basis of RANK, NORANK and mentor games run as SCHOOLS games (Friends and other Schools games do not contribute towards the eligibility criteria)

Adding the Aspiring Class was a great idea and very successful. This tweak would be consistent with that amendment.

New users that choose to enter and complete a mentor game are a "better than average" subset of our new users at PlayDip. We should invite them to join us.
