MidCon 2019

Postby Danivon » 12 Nov 2019, 12:04

Having been quiet on the Dip front for a while, with a weekend pass from an 8-month pregnant Ms Danivon by buying her a spa weekend, I took a punt on MidCon having a tournament this year.

We had enough players for a board on both days, most of whom are on here, but it wasn't set up as a formal competition with scoring system etc.

I only played on the Saturday, as I had to go back to my wife for at least some of her actual birthday (my Husband of the Year award is apparently in the post).

I'll write up an AAR later (perhaps when some of you inde tify yourselves), but despite being on the losing end I really enjoyed the rearguard action that my allies and I kept up against a rampant Western Triple.

Hi Danivon,

It was great to meet you, thanks for a fun game on the Saturday and for being a good ally to my Austria! I thought you played a great game in tricky circumstances, so I'm hopeful we can meet again soon.

I hope Mrs D was suitably impressed that you got your priorities right on the Sunday ;)

Well, she was pampered at the spa and I had also bought some perfume as a bonus.

I had to make dinner though.

I take my hat off to you on the tactical side, some very good moves and combos that meant we could hold the line longer than would be expected. Four players where two are in constant danger of elimination can be hard to manage, but I think we all did well.

Well done on your joint top on the second game.

Hey Danivon

Was great to meet you. Loved your dip style.

Hope it's not too long before we share another pint of Derby's strange home-brewed Rocket Beer (with its aftertaste of sweaty armpits).

Good luck with the imminent arrival!

But sheeeeeesht. You guys! She's 8 and a half months pregnant. You should be cooking dinner EVERY night. Plus massive puddings......

For various reasons it has to be small meals at the moment, and no puddings.

Hi Danivon. Glad to see you are a playdipper. I was England on the first board. Well defended, all of you! You were the only one who spotted the WT early enough, but couldn't convince the others in time.

How many show up for a Diplomacy tourney like this? I was going to go to Tempest In a Teapot in Washington last year but didn't. How'd you do?

We had 8, which is clearly just enough (and some years recently MidCon has not had the numbers, hence a renewed effort to build up the UK ftf scene is being looked at).

Tempest is more well attended. I can't see this year's and last year was World Dip Championships with 94 attending. 2016 and 2017 had a good number of boards, with 30-40 players.

Perhaps it was too obvious for them to take seriously. You guys may as well have used a klaxon and flashing lights. The Lvp/Yor misorder was as much an indicator as France swarming West and Germany not moving for the Lowlands.

Maybe I should have just told everyone there was no chance of a Western Triple...

Funnily enough, that was a genuine misorder!
