WDC 2018 Detailed Rules and Scoring?

Postby Jack007 » 25 Sep 2018, 07:16

Can please anybody tell me where I can find the detailed rules and scoring system of the coming WDC in Washington DC?
:?

Players will participate in up to three of the four preliminary rounds. The players with the top seven scores will participate in a Top Board in round five to determine the 2018 World Champion of Diplomacy. See the “Tournament Details” section for a complete breakdown of the scoring system.

The mentioned “Tournament Details” section seems not to exist, or maybe I'm just blind. Or is it on another website?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The scoring system is sum of squares: http://www.diplomaticcorps.org/Scoring/squares.html

Two rounds apiece Friday and Saturday, one Sunday.

That’s my knowledge in toto; someone else may know more.

That's very useful info. Thanks Dave.

I seem to remember that there was some kind of extra bonus point system for the board leader last year in Oxford, like 10 extra points or something? Will that be the same in DC?

Pretty sure it's just straight up sum of squares.

Any restrictions in game duration / number of game years?

Not on Friday or Saturday, you play until you agree to stop or someone solos. Sunday will be limited by time—I think the cutoff is between 1-3, but I’m not sure.

As Nanook said, I don’t believe Peter is using Dan’s modifications to SoS from last year. The bulk of the tournament structure will be similar though; mandatory drop round, top board, etc.

Thanks DavidMaletsky, Big Gun and Nanook for your contribution. Though it doesn't exactly answer my question, which was: where can I find the detailed rules and scoring system of WDC 2018. At least I know now that I'm not blind, and others can't find them, too.

As it seems, an official disclosure of the rules and scoring doesn't exist. Which in my opinion is quite strange. Normally the rules of a tournament are published together with the announcement of the competition. I don't understand.

So, of course, I ask myself why are the rules and scoring held secret?

- Is there a discord among the organisers about the rules?

- Do they fear to lose participants if they publish upfront?

- Do they fear discussions and protest?

- Are the rules dependent on who will show up as participants?

- Did the organizer(s) simply not do their homework? (I know, this is a bit provocative, sorry.)

- Are there other reasons I haven't thought about so far, and what reasons?

Be it as it might, remains the fact that this is quite alienating, and would - if true - degrade what is called the "World Dip Con" to dilettantism.

There's a far more banal answer here: that they intended to post a Tournament Details page with all such information, and they forgot to do so.
