Partly it's the stalemate line, but it's more the overall tone. I found that compared to most games here at PlayDip, let alone the forum variants (which is what I spend most of my time on, really), there was a lot less leeway given to one-turn or even one-year moves with small goals, and a lot more emphasis on long-term goals and keeping strong alliances. I think it's partly due to the much shorter turn time and partly due to having to work with in-person reactions. With long deadlines and relatively impersonal communication, I've found it possible to set up small grabs/stabs and essentially "reset" the next year, so that while I usually have a long-term alliance secondary alliances/targets may change year to year. (I didn't bring home the solo, but my Wales in Heptarchy 12 is pretty much a textbook example of that mentality actually working.) That absolutely didn't work face to face, either on my first board where I found my more speculative positional moves generated instant negative reactions, or on the third when I couldn't get anything going to "reset" with Italy after either of his initial stabs (though in that case the player involved and my own diplomatic skill probably had something to do with it).
