Postby Carebear » 20 Jan 2014, 09:01

I am not affiliated with this event. They apparently forgot to post for it this year here. However, for those that might not be too far away, it may not be to late to join the fun... The following is copied from promotional material

What: Face-to-Face Diplomacy Tournament
Where: Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, Washington
When: January 24 -26, 2014
Fee: Free

https://www.facebook.com/events/452691528142776/
http://www.diplom.org/Zine/W2013A/Barnes/waccon.htm

Schedule
Round 1 - Friday at 6:00pm, though people are welcome to start arriving at 3:00pm to hang out.
Round 2 - Saturday at 9:00am
Round 3 - Saturday at 6:00pm
Round 4 - Sunday at 9:30am. It will end sometime between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. A short awards ceremony to follow.

Scoring
Because we’re hosting Dipcon, we’re doing Sum of Squares as we have in someprevious years. If you’re interested, the Weasels put together a good description here:
http://windycityweasels.org/news/354-wdcscoring

WAC operates with a Top Board. The winner of the Top Board will win the tournament and the National Championship. All other places are open to any player on any board.

Recently heard that they expect around 70 players. At least a couple will be attending from out of country.

I'm flying out from Chicago. It will be my sixth trip to WAC. It's a great event. If you're close, definitely check it out.

Very Grey, get some Grecian Formula dude. But, you still have yours at least.

Assume you will be there for the Thursday evening event?

So, how was the tournament?

It was great.

Unfortunately it's the last WAC, so we're all left hoping for a reunion tour at some point.

Tournament Director Matt Shields has written his recap on facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/events/4526915 ... 715954389/

You can read a bit more (scroll down to the comments for Kevin O'Kelly's writing) at the Windy City Weasels webpage
http://www.windycityweasels.org/weeklyw ... -of-jan-27

Edi's brief writeup (which is more about a poker hand he didn't even play) is at the Bay Area diplomacy mailing list
http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/baya ... sages/7211

[There may be more, this is all I know of}

I'd expect to see some more writing about the event either in DiplomacyWorld or The Pouch's zine, both of which have their next editions out at the start of April.

I've never been to a tournament, and in fact I've never actually finished a F2F game with seven players.

I really wish there was some kind of group of players around Los Angeles. It seems ridiculous to me that there is such a strong diplomacy presence up in the bay area but nothing organized down here. If there was some kind of tournament here, I'd go in a heartbeat to see what it's all about.

The issue is organization. If you were willing to take the lead on getting players involved, you could start up a LA group.

Wish I had the time and energy to do so, but alas I've got bigger fish to fry. I'd join a group, but can't really organize anything now. Hell, I'm not even taking the time to play games here anymore the last four months or so, though I kind of miss it. Hmm, perhaps some sort of no-rank game might be nice now that I think about it.

Back on topic, we actually did try to organize something through the forum a couple of years ago. There were maybe 4 or 5 people expressing interest, but it wasn't enough for a full game, and we were all spread pretty far apart. Nothing materialized, and no one really wanted to step up and take charge of the whole thing. I guess you are right, and when it comes down to it there have to be those who really take the initiative and expend the energy to start a group.

Yep, Dip groups have come and gone. They are usually held together by a single individual with the drive to make it happen. It is great when a group has another individual able to pick up the reins when another moves on.
